hey, in the lts.conf can you have multiple like= on a single MAC entry?
09:19
<Hyperbyte>
rickogden, no idea... why don't you try it out? By running 'getltscfg -a' on the client in a local xterm or screen_02 you can see what config values the client loaded.

Thank you
17:15
I have an issue with my thin clients showing an LVDS display connected, when there is not one. Thin clients are HP st5742
17:17
If I do a XRANDR_DISABLED = True then I can at least see the menus on the screen, and have a somewhat centered login screen. If not, it looks like my login screen is caught centering between my screen, and a non existent screen (so half the logo and login field is off the right hand of the screen) as well as the background only showing half of a picture.
17:18
When I look at the Monitors, I see an entry for LAPTOP and for the screen that is connected.
17:18
<Hyperbyte>
Ah. You need to disable the LVDS output completely.
17:18
<bennabiy>
How
17:18
<Hyperbyte>
Three possible ways, AFAIK
17:19Gremble has joined IRC (Gremble!~Ben@cpc35-aztw23-2-0-cust207.18-1.cable.virginmedia.com)
17:19
<Hyperbyte>
One, as a kernel parameter during PXE boot, via /var/lib/tftpboot/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default
17:19
Two, as some permanent Xorg configuration in the LTSP client chroot
17:19
Or three, via some lts.conf XRANDR_* parameter
17:20
<bennabiy>
I thought I tried the first one, but perhaps I did not put in the right command.
17:20
<Hyperbyte>
Unfortunately I am not sure which method is preferred or what the syntax is for any of those
17:20
What did you try?
17:21
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp/+bug/693151/comments/1
17:22
<bennabiy>
that is what I tried, but I guess I did not edit the right file, as my changes are no longer there
17:24
when I update the tftp file, do I need to rebuild my client image?
17:25
<Hyperbyte>
Nope
17:26
<bennabiy>
Ok. Let me see if that fixes it.
17:26
<Hyperbyte>
In fact, when you run ltsp-update-kernels the pxelinux.cfg/default file would probably get reset.
17:26
<bennabiy>
what about lts.conf changes? Do I need to rebuild?
17:26
<Hyperbyte>
No. In fact, you should never "rebuilt"
17:26
<bennabiy>
I mean update
17:27
<Hyperbyte>
ltsp-build-client creates the client chroot. This should only happen once, or unless you really screw up your client chroot and need a new one.
17:27
<bennabiy>
I have never run update-kernels but the file pxelinux.cfg/default has been overwritten twice
17:27
<Hyperbyte>
As for ltsp-update-image, this command generates an LTSP client image in /opt/ltsp/images/ from the chroot (by default in /opt/ltsp/i386/)
17:28
<bennabiy>
yes, pardon my faulty terminology
17:28
<Hyperbyte>
So only if you modify something in /opt/ltsp/i386/, only then do you need to run ltsp-update-image
17:28
ltsp-update-kernels might be called by ltsp-update-image, not sure.
17:28
Generally speaking, once the clients are to your satisfaction - do not touch.
17:28
<bennabiy>
That makes sense
17:28
<Hyperbyte>
If you're using thin clients, there is no point in updating or modifying them, unless you are having problems.
17:31
<bennabiy>
Great! It fixed it when I updated video=LVDS-1:d
17:31
to the default
17:32
<Hyperbyte>
Good!
17:34
<bennabiy>
Next question... How can I customize the plymouth and or position of the logo / uname / pw on the ldm screen
17:35
<Hyperbyte>
Customize plymouth... the exact same as with any regular Ubuntu installation, except you make your modifications in /opt/ltsp/i386/
17:35
(which means you also run ltsp-update-image afterwards - see if it overwrites your kernel parameters?.... perhaps there's a better way of specifying those, see if there's config in /etc/ltsp/)
17:36
<bennabiy>
I did that, and the changes never made it to the actual client even after update-image
17:36
the default file references a nonexistent file call /etc/ltsp/update-kernel.conf
17:37
<Hyperbyte>
As for ldm, there are LDM themes in /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ldm/themes/... you can modify them there. You cannot change the layout of anything unfortunately, just the images. Well I suppose you could change the layout if you hacked the source and recompiled ldm....
17:37
<bennabiy>
saying to make changes there, but there is no document on what to put in that file
17:37
<Hyperbyte>
bennabiy, sorry to say, but if you made changes to /opt/ltsp/i386/, did ltsp-update-image and it didn't work - you did it wrong.
17:37
Put this in lts.conf:
17:37
!screen_02
17:37
<ltsp>
screen_02: To get a root shell on an Ubuntu thin client: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ClientTroubleshooting#Using_a_shell_SCREEN
17:38
<bennabiy>
I have it :)
17:38
<Hyperbyte>
Then press ctrl+alt+f2 when you get a login prompt... you'll get a root shell... check for yourself, your changes are there in the image.
17:38
If they don't work, the changes are wrong :)
17:39
<bennabiy>
All I did was overwrite the default filenames with my own images... is there a viewer I could use to verify?
17:39
I guess I could install ssh and scp the files back to the server to check them
17:40
<Hyperbyte>
You can install anything in the running machine by the way
17:40
It'll be gone after reboot, but you can experiment.
17:40
*running thin client
17:40
<bennabiy>

any advice you have would be much appreciated
18:23
<Hyperbyte>
bennabiy, I don't. This is not LTSP related too.
18:23
You could ask this in #ubuntu
18:25
<bennabiy>
Think I found the answer... need to sudo update-initramfs -u
18:25
in the chroot
18:26
I asked in here because it involved the thin client, but I guess it stopped there, as it was the same process as on a regular server, except being prefixed in the chroot dir
18:26
I really appreciate your help.
18:27
<Hyperbyte>
Exactly. LTSP does some magic, but when that ends, regular Linux begins. :)
18:28
You're very welcome by the way.
18:32
<bennabiy>
Hyperbyte, are you in the states?
18:32
One question regarding LTSP and modifying the CHROOT
18:33
Do I need to mount anything special when I need to chroot and make changes?
18:34
<Hyperbyte>
I'm in the Netherlands
18:35
<bennabiy>
Do you ever make it to Germany?
18:36Fenuks has left IRC (Fenuks!~Fenuks@l49-248-92.cn.ru, Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
18:36
<Hyperbyte>
As for modifying the chroot... yes, you need to mount all kind of stuff. Easiest is to type 'ltsp-chroot', it does all the magic for you. Also, to avoid confusion... when you type ltsp-chroot, /opt/ltsp/i386/ becomes /
18:36
Type 'exit' when done
18:36
Yeah, I've been to Germany lots of times.
18:36
I had a girlfriend who lived in Montabauer, later in Frankfurt.
18:37
I've been to Montabauer, Frankfurt and Cologne lots of times... Koblenz once or twice.
