<dgroos>
Hello!
16:08
Came into classroom this morning and clients weren't working normally...
16:08
Last week I added a stand-alone ubuntu computer to my classroom LAN.
16:09
<mwalters>
It's hard to work normally on monday morning
16:09
<dgroos>
@mwalters, so very true!
16:09
I don't blame the clients... or the server ;-)
16:11
Epoptes on this server can WOL all of the clients, but it can't detect them as having booted...
16:12
I wonder if when I added the stand-alone client to the epoptes server, and got to the step of making the certificate...
16:13
That then that invalidated the previous certificate that the FAT clients had?
16:15GodFather has left IRC (GodFather!~rcc@2600:1002:b022:c25b:e156:e8e4:188c:661b, Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
16:17
<dgroos>
I tried to follow the directions @alkisg provided on: https://answers.launchpad.net/epoptes/+question/284584
16:18
Using #2 as it seemed to apply most to my 2-NIC setup where there was a fixed IP (192.168.67.1) on the LTSP server
16:20
Epoptes-server is working great with the standalone, but not the fat clients.

<dgroos>
AH! looks like the ltsp.org installation page is working again! Just loaded (been trying on/off all morning).
16:25
<mwalters>
I don't really have any insight here, sorry!
16:26
<dgroos>
@mwalters, np, thanks though, it gave me the idea of being more encouraging to the clients/server on monday morings ;-)
16:27
<mwalters>
That always helps. Pooring starbucks into them generally doesn't help... unlike me.
16:27
pouring, even
16:27

<alkisg>
dgroos: did you somehow regenerate the server certificate or did you reinstall epoptes on the server?
17:08
dgroos: sudo md5sum /etc/epoptes/* ==> should have the same md5sum for all .crt files on the server and all the clients, ltsp and not
17:09
You can also just run ltsp-update-image -c / again, so that ltsp clients get the new certificate

<dgroos>
@alkisg, I will check, thanks. I did already run: sudo ltsp-update-image --cleanup /, is that the same command?
17:41
<adbenitez>
alkisg: thanks for the help last day, I lost the connection

18:04
<alkisg>
dgroos: yup, that's the same command, the computers needed restart
18:07
<dgroos>
@alkisg, now it looks like epoptes only works when the standalone is off. Somehow it seems to be corrupting the process. Well, I can just keep the stand-alone off for now!
18:08
<alkisg>
dgroos: it would be a serious bug if a standalone connection could disrupt the other connections
18:08
Can you test the output of sudo md5sum /etc/epoptes/* from everywhere?
18:09
<dgroos>
I did that on /etc/epoptes/*
18:09
and I want to check it again and compare it with the output from before.

<mwalters>
Gonna fire this one off and be back tomorrow ;)
20:15
Anyone using/have used/thought about using then changed your mind about using freeipa with ltsp?
20:15
Success stories, horror stories, caveats?
20:29nehemiah1 has left IRC (nehemiah1!~nehemiah@hs-user-138.wia.cz, Remote host closed the connection)
20:35
<alkisg>
As of 2018 FreeIPA uses 389 Directory Server for its LDAP implementation, MIT's Kerberos 5 for authentication and single sign-on, the Apache HTTP Server and Python for the management framework and Web UI,
20:35
(optionally) DogTag[6] for the integrated CA, and BIND with a custom plugin for the integrated DNS server. Since version 3.0.0, FreeIPA also uses Samba to integrate with Microsoft's Active Directory by way of Cross Forest Trusts.
20:36* alkisg thinks it would be a horror story to tell a teacher to install/maintain this :D

20:44
<vagrantc>
depends on if it works or not
20:45
if they did it well, i'd be very, very impressed :)
20:53
<alkisg>
Eh, I think if we had that as a prerequisite for ltsp installations, no teacher would ever install ltsp :) They can copy/paste a couple of terminal commands, but I doubt many teachers would want to spend an afternoon to set up their users system
20:54
<dgroos>
I'd love to!!!
20:54
ok just kidding
20:54
actually I want it to "just work"...
20:55
<alkisg>
+1
20:55
<vagrantc>
alkisg: indeed
20:55
<dgroos>
Alas, there were probs with my system though they did boot.
20:56
<vagrantc>
the skeptic in me suspects it's a lot of work to get freeipa set up ... but the hopeful part of me would love to see all those features working and integrated and easily installable
20:56
<dgroos>
Sometimes login worked, on some computers it didn't. Reboots didn't help. Different users didn't help. Hard time finding pattern :-(
20:56
but I'm looking...

20:59
<mwalters>
ah, but I'm no teacher ;)
21:00* mwalters stabs ringwraith
21:00
<mwalters>
It's installed... there's some funkiness with the ubuntu package, but I think it's a fedora/centos project mainly
21:01
left wrk before I tried to install the client stuff onto my ltsp test box
21:02
but idea is, I have 4 ltsp servers, each with all of our users
21:02
so everytime I add a user, I need to do it 4 places... each time I need to remove a user... 4 places... etc, etc.
21:03
<vagrantc>
configuration management
21:03
<mwalters>
puppet?
21:03
<vagrantc>
i'm partial to ansible
21:03
<mwalters>
these are also business users
21:03
<vagrantc>
plenty of options
21:03
<mwalters>
(I'm not using it in a lab environment)
21:03
<vagrantc>
mwalters: meaning what?
21:04
<mwalters>
e.g., I don't want passwords in a config file ;)
21:04* vagrantc could not fathom how to do a deployment of more than 1 computer without configuration management anymore
21:04* vagrantc even uses configuration management for single machine installs
21:04
<mwalters>
orly
21:05
<vagrantc>
i haven't had to do password management that way, though ... i've only done setups that used ssh keys
21:05
<mwalters>
yeah, we have ~50 users that are constantly moving between offices
21:05
(that are miles away from each other)
21:09
<dgroos>
I'm on the server and type in terminal:
21:09
-- Logs begin at Fri 2018-09-21 08:37:03 CDT, end at Mon 2018-10-22 16:05:35 CDT. --
21:09

21:09
(oops I type: journalctl -u epoptes)
21:10
shouldn't there be *lots* returned?
21:12
to be more coherent... I typed: journalctl -u epoptes
21:12
and it returned -- No entries --
21:15
gotta go...
