I have a question, is it possible to add LTSP using distro Linux Mint
06:11
how hard is it?
06:25
anyone here
06:30
<alkisg>
collecram: yes, it is possible to install ltsp on mint
06:30
!ubuntu-mate
06:30
<ltsp>
ubuntu-mate: Ubuntu-mate works very well with LTSP, even with older clients. Download the 64-bit version if *all* your clients have >= 2GB RAM, otherwise download the 32-bit version. http://ubuntu-mate.org/download/
06:31
<alkisg>
Mate is better :D but if you want mint, ltsp should work there as well
06:31mikkel has joined IRC (mikkel!~mikkel@mail.dlvs.dk)
06:32* collecram ubuntu mate?
06:32
<alkisg>
Yes
06:32* collecram how do I add the LTSP files to a distro?
06:32
<alkisg>
If you write /me in front of a line, it means that you're talking to yourself
06:33
Don't write /me
06:33
Linux mint already has ltsp
06:33
You just need to run apt install ltsp-server etc
06:33
<collecram>
kkkkkkk it's been awhile
06:33
<alkisg>
!ltsp-pnp
06:33
<ltsp>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
06:33
<alkisg>
This is a good guide to help you setup ltsp
06:33
It should work in mint as well
06:33
<collecram>
sudo apt-get ltsp-server
06:34
<alkisg>
"etc"
06:34
That means that more steps are needed
06:34
Installing ltsp-server is not enough
06:34
Read the page that I linked, ltsp-pn
06:34
p
06:34
<collecram>
all right, this irc chat room took me back to my teens
06:35
<alkisg>
How many clients do you want to boot with ltsp?
06:35
<collecram>
about 10
06:36
<alkisg>
How much ram do they have, and what cpu?
06:36
<collecram>
512mb
06:36
pentium 4
06:36
<alkisg>
Hmm it's in the threshold... do you know which pentium 4? E.g. at 1.7 GHz or at 3.0 GHz?
06:37
<collecram>
I have a server with 8gb of RAM and HD with 500gb
06:37
<alkisg>
(in order to propose a different method of installing ltsp)
06:37
<collecram>
2.5Ghz hiperthred
06:37
<alkisg>
Cool
06:38
So, I propose that you try ubuntu-mate, not mint, because cinnamon is slow and doesn't work with thin clients
06:38
And, I propose that you buy more RAM so that each client has e.g. 1 GB RAM, so that they run the apps with their own cpu/ram, it'll go better that way
06:39
<collecram>
all right, I'll look into ubuntu mate, my staff is used to linux mint
06:39
<alkisg>
If you can't buy ram, I propose that you split the ram so that half of the clients have 768 ram and run the os with their own cpu (which is called ltsp fat client) and the others 256 and run it on the server (which is called thin clients)
06:39
<collecram>
using the mate version
06:39
<alkisg>
Do you already have mint installed on the server?
06:40
<collecram>
Yes i have
06:40
<alkisg>
OK then just follow the ltsp-pnp steps, don't try mate yet
06:40
!ltsp-pnp
06:40
<ltsp>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
06:40
<collecram>
I can add 1gb of RAM
06:40
on the clients
06:40
<alkisg>
That'll be the best.
06:41
<collecram>
this way it will be diskless?
06:41
<alkisg>
Yes
06:42
<collecram>
PXE boot via cable
06:42
<alkisg>
Yes
06:42
Is it mint that corresponds to ubuntu 16.04, or older?
06:42
<collecram>
there's no way to do over wireless?
06:42
it's the last distro Sarah
06:43
<alkisg>
It's possible to do it over wireless, but wireless will be so slow that you'll wish that you wouldn't have done it
06:43
<collecram>
Yeah, lets break the cables
06:44
but it will be all right I hope

laptop hangs there alkisg
08:50
it restarts actually alkisg
08:52
<alkisg>
Doesn't it write another line before restarting?
08:52
Like, "no dhcp or proxydhcp offers"?
08:53
dim--: and, what's the output of this line? grep -r interfaces /etc/dnsmasq.d
08:55
<dim-->
tell any system-wide dnsmasq instance to make sure to bind interfaces
08:55
bind interfaces
08:56
<alkisg>
dim--: comment it out with a # in front of #bind-interfaces, and run sudo service dnsmasq restart
08:56
See if that helps

09:04

<ltsp>
vnc-dide: To share your screen with me, run this: sudo apt-get --yes install x11vnc; x11vnc -connect srv1-dide.ioa.sch.gr - this is a reverse connection, it doesn't need port forwarding etc.
09:08
<alkisg>
dim--: do you have a dhcp server, e.g. a router?
09:09
<dim-->
no
09:09
alkisg
09:09
<alkisg>
dim--: then proxydhcp is not appropriate for you, you should use a real dhcp
09:10
Describe your network please
09:10
Do you have many clients with static ip addresses etc?
09:10
E.g. how come you're not just using a router as the dhcp server?
09:10
<dim-->
alkisg yes we use static ip addresses
09:10
<alkisg>
dim--: are you greek?
09:11

alkisg yes
