A_I_: any specific questions?
09:30
<A_I_>
yes
09:30
I am python win32 dev
09:30
twisted also
09:31
wrote a NT service
09:31
have some experience with twisted perspective broker and SSL
09:31
so if I can help developping some code for epoptes windows client ...
09:32
<alkisg>
That'd be great, sure!
09:32
Have you seen the file /usr/share/epoptes/client-functions?
09:32
<A_I_>
I've seen nothing
09:32
<alkisg>
We extracted all the needed client code into a library
09:32
<A_I_>
my boss just came to me and asked if I would like to develop
09:32
<alkisg>
For just this purpose, to help epoptes-client development in other platforms
09:32
<A_I_>
that was a few minutes ago :-)
09:32
<alkisg>
Ah, ok
09:33
<A_I_>
just discover epoptes but already know iTalc (so I know what it is about ~ )
09:33
<alkisg>

09:33
<A_I_>
we have a windows client capable of launching vncviewer and winvnc and /listen and -connect etc.
09:34
<alkisg>
That's the protocol that you need to implement in order to have a working windows-based epoptes-client ^
09:34
<A_I_>
so it should be easy to add epoptes code in it
09:34
<alkisg>
And if you see that you need some changes in the protocol, feel free to ping us
09:41
<A_I_>
ok
09:41
I don't understand how this represent a protocol
09:43
but it will surely drain through my brains this we

09:51
<alkisg>
A_I_: on the wire, text-based commands are transferred
09:51
So e.g. the epoptes GUI will send you: screenshot 150 75
09:51
You read that as a string
09:52
You parse the command, call your thumbnail function, and write the output to your stdout
09:52
I.e. the binary screenshot data
09:52
At that point you're done processing one command and you go on with reading the next one, if it exists
09:58
And of course all that data is transferred through an openssl channel
09:58
But the daemon also supports unencrypted connections, that should help you while developing the client

stgraber: the 'show all desktops' thingy in unity-2d is slow and consumes a lot of bandwidth, do you know if there's a way to disable the animations?
15:34
I guess I'll just have to file a few bugs for unity 2d on ltsp. so far we have that, the dash not working, and some artifacts when brwosing over launcher icons. but if those are fixed then it seems like unity-2d could in concept work fine
15:35

they're certainly planning to do SRU releases of unity in 12.04 so if prioritized properly these can certainly be fixed

even if that means adding some getenv('LTSP_CLIENT') != NULL in the code ;)
15:36
<highvoltage>
ok
15:36
it's not high priority for me, but I'll at least file the bugs and discuss it with Kaleo so that he's aware of it, and I could offer some testing

Hello!
17:43
Riddle me this - sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server start, NO error, yet it won't start?
17:45
<slackish>
roasted: head -n1 /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server
17:45
if that shows sh,dash,bash
17:46
then try adding a -x flag at the end.. it will show you a trac of what it runs
17:46
ie #!/bin/sh becomes #!/bin/sh -x
17:49
<roasted>
#!/bin/sh comes back
17:51
is that normal?
17:51
<slackish>
that is normal
17:51
<roasted>
I just find it weird I get NO error, nothing in syslog, yet I still get a - when I run service --status-all
17:52
I've brought the interfaces up, down, restarted networking, restarted the server, etc.
17:52
<slackish>
There is probably a good reason, just need to find it. so have you added the -x flag? if so, try starting the server again and see what it runs
17:52
<||cw>
also check /etc/defaults/
17:53
<roasted>
what for in defaults?
17:53
<||cw>
er, with no 's'
17:53
a file with options, sometimes you have to specifically enable a service there
17:54
<roasted>
I'm not that familiar with the default folder, what in particular would I be looking for?
17:54
<||cw>
a dhcp file
17:57
<roasted>
it says INTERFACES=""
17:58
<||cw>
no comments that are helpful?
17:58
<roasted>
yeah, sec
17:58
doing 100 things at once. :(
17:58
so if it reads INTERFACES=" eth0 eth1" it would fly?
17:58
or comma?
17:58
spaces, nm
18:01
still a minus sign
18:01
wow
18:04
restarted networking, restarted dhcp, no dice
18:04
doing another server reboot quick

[2012-04-09] Accepted 0.5.3-1 in unstable (low) => vagrantc: so next upload would be after 19th?
19:03
<vagrantc>
alkisg: yeah, probably, unless i do a medium priority upload in two days ... although it looks like there are some non-translation code changes as well?
19:03
well, one change, regarding a workaround for twisted
19:03
<alkisg>
We can revert that one line if it helps
19:04
There was a bug in twisted which got fixed so we no longer needed our workaround
19:04
<vagrantc>
it's fine for debian ... though it would probably require a versioned dependency
19:04
<alkisg>
And the bug was ubuntu-specific also...
19:04
(the workaround didn't harm debian of course)
19:04
highvoltage: did you try with a thin or fat client?

<alkisg>
highvoltage: btw, do you know how to select a system-wide default session in ubuntu? (or in general?)
19:06* alkisg is looking at Xsession.d...
19:06
<vagrantc>
update-alternatives --config x-session-manager ??
19:07
<highvoltage>
alkisg: thin client
19:07
(completely default except for having LDM_DIRECTX set to true in lts.conf)
19:07
<alkisg>
vagrantc: yup that matches what I saw in 50x11-common_determine-startup too... trying it...
19:07
highvoltage: and xwininfo -root | grep Depth says 24?
19:09
/etc/alternatives/x-session-manager -> /usr/bin/gnome-session ==> but which one out of unity, unity-2d, gnome-shell, gnome-fallback? :-/ ...
19:09
<vagrantc>
whatever the default gnome-session does without arguments, i guess.
19:10
i think debian implements wrappers for the gnome variants
19:11
<alkisg>
Makes sense, it would make it much easier for the sysadmin, just an update-alternatives...
19:11
--session=SESSION
19:11
Use the applications defined in SESSION.session. If not specified, gnome.session will be used
19:11
<vagrantc>
yup, there's gnome-session and gnome-session-fallback
19:13
<alkisg>
I have them too here as executables, but they're not listed in update-alternatives
19:14
http://library.gnome.org/admin/system-admin-guide/stable/sessions-3.html.en ==> If no user session file is present, the default settings in /usr/share/gnome/default.session are used.
19:14
<highvoltage>
alkisg: it does indeed say 16bit... and unity2d now works whether I have it specifically set in lts.conf or not, so perhaps I was just caught by some coincedence this morning
19:14
<alkisg>
...but I don't have that file

<alkisg>
/usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults => sets default for lightdm... but there should be a dm-agnostic way to do the same thing :(
19:30
<highvoltage>
would be nice if it was an alternative

I still can't find out why thin clients default to unity though, when I have gnome-shell installed
19:48[GuS] has left IRC ([GuS]!~MysT@unaffiliated/gus/x-663402, Read error: Connection reset by peer)
19:48* alkisg gives up and votes highvoltage's LDM_DEFAULT_SESSION idea :)
19:51
<alkisg>
I also think that we don't do any error checking in .dmrc parsing, so if the user has previously selected a session which is no longer there, he won't be able to login until he selects something else
19:51
I think we should fallback to the default session in that case
