i would like to install nxclient as a screen script, there is a lot of very old documentation around mostly conflicting, i assume that it should just be a case of install nxclient in the chroot, and then mirroring the rdesktop script, but does anyone have any pointers or alternative suggestions before i get stuck in?

hi
06:48
<chrisjrob>
X-TaZ: do you need LDM_PRINTER_DEFAULT="hp_LaserJet_2300_series_14.1.250.10" as well? i've never used this functionality.
06:48
<openstep>
anyone here have experience with multiple ltsp servers in one network?
06:49
<X-TaZ>
chrisjrob, its a ltsp-cluster fonctionality :X
06:49
<chrisjrob>
X-TaZ: i gathered from this http://pastebin.com/f23105b3e
06:50
<openstep>
ok, and can you give me some insight as how hard it is to install?
06:50
<chrisjrob>
X-TaZ: google found it, probably from someone's not working, so be warned.
06:50
<X-TaZ>
chrisjrob, ty, i already read this :)
06:51
There is absolutely nothing on google about help for ltsp-cluster. This function is by default in the web-admin ltsp-cluster-control
06:51
<openstep>
and have you tired to make it work?
06:52
<X-TaZ>
So i think it could be used. Im waiting for stgraber
06:52
openstep, talking to me ?
06:52
<openstep>
:)
06:52
yes
06:52
<X-TaZ>
Well ltsp-cluster is almost hard to install. But works nicely
06:53
<openstep>
is it working for you?
06:53
<X-TaZ>
Yes its working on a test platform
06:53
I'm using 5 servers and 2 clients :')
06:53
Working since yesterday :)
06:53
<openstep>
cool, can you help me set up one?
06:53
I am having trouble
06:53
<X-TaZ>
For sure
06:53
Tell me :)
06:54
<openstep>
do you have a good documentation?
06:54
<X-TaZ>
https://wiki.stgraber.org/LTSP-Cluster/Documentation/OpenVZSetup
06:54
Its the one i used, but didnt used virtualization
06:55
<openstep>
I have a working neviroment in s high school
06:55
<X-TaZ>
I'm currently writing a 40page document about it, will be released when school will have noted it
06:55
<openstep>
but with one server
06:55
and now I would like to add more servers and clients
06:55
have been struggling with ubuntu 8.04
06:56
on a test platform to add ldap on one server
06:56
...
06:56
can you tell me how you managed to work?
06:56
<X-TaZ>
i'm currently installing ldap
06:57
Heheh I followed the documentation that i gave to you 2 mins ago
06:58
<openstep>
what was your base distro?
06:58
<X-TaZ>
applyed this http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LDAP and this and this http://www.ltsp.org/~sbalneav/LTSPManual.html#id2537753
06:58
My base distro is 8.10
06:59
<openstep>
server version or desktop?
07:00
<X-TaZ>
server version for 4 of my servers + 1 ( the root server ) in desktop, because i'm working on it ( it the only one who have a screen :p )
07:00
How many thin clients do you manage to use with it ?
07:01
<openstep>
well, planned to serve 32 with one server
07:01
but we have an old dos educational software that eats up a lot of cpu
07:01
so I need to add another server
07:01
<X-TaZ>
If you want to install ltsp-cluster, i suggest you tu read the helps for mille-xterm. ltsp-cluster isnt so documented
07:02
<openstep>
but as far as I know mille-xterm is different from ubuntu ltsp
07:02
at least network wise
07:02
<X-TaZ>
Well, installing a loadbalancing system is a bit to hard in order to server only 32 persons
07:03
mille-xterm became ltsp-cluster
07:03
<openstep>
we will transform more clients once I know how to implement ltsp cluster
07:04
<X-TaZ>
I think you'd better split your network in two parts - with a router or a vlan - and connect one ltsp server on each part of your network
07:04
Hey ok
07:04
<openstep>
no thanks
07:05
on this site I do not see how to actually install and configure https://wiki.stgraber.org/LTSP-Cluster
07:05
<X-TaZ>
I told you to read the mille-xterm documentation, because with it you can understand better how ltsp-cluster works - ltsp-cluster's website is so poor of informations
07:05
<openstep>
ok, I will
07:05
<X-TaZ>
https://wiki.stgraber.org/LTSP-Cluster/Documentation/OpenVZSetup
07:05
Just remove the virtualisation parts from this docs and you are done :)
07:06
<chrisjrob>
i would like to install nxclient as a screen script, there is a lot of very old documentation around mostly conflicting, i assume that it should just be a case of install nxclient in the chroot, and then mirroring the rdesktop script, but does anyone have any pointers or alternative suggestions before i get stuck in?
07:07
<openstep>
so start with installing ubuntu
07:07
then follow with mille...
07:07
<X-TaZ>
Do you have 5 servers ?
07:07
Or a powerfull one ( to use virtualization )
07:07
<openstep>
one
07:08
but would like to add 1-2 more
07:08
<X-TaZ>
So you'll need to use openVZ
07:08
ltsp-cluster needs 5 servers to work ( can be virtualized ) 1 for boot - 1 for control - 1 for load balancing - 2 for apps servers
07:09
<openstep>
what is that?
07:09
<X-TaZ>
the 3 first can be some very old machines
07:09
what is tha , what ?
07:09
<openstep>
openvz
07:09
virtualizing?
07:09
<X-TaZ>
yes
07:10
With openvz running on a powerfull server, you can emulate 5 ubuntu-servers running
07:10
its cool for testings
07:10
<openstep>
aha, I see
07:11
so how long did this take you to install?
07:11
and set up
07:11
<X-TaZ>
1 week
07:11
<openstep>
24/day :)
07:11
<X-TaZ>
Nono
07:12
Its feseable within 3 hours
07:12
<openstep>
first I need to understand how ot works
07:12
<X-TaZ>
When you have a complete doc ( it issnt the case for ltsp-cluster )
07:12
You have to find loads of things, like asking stgraber many things that are not on the doc, it makes waste lot of time
07:13
<openstep>
since you have it already working can you write it down what to watch out for?

07:20
this one do you mean?
07:23
<X-TaZ>

<Gadi>
danners: turn off dhcp on the ltsp server and tell the other server to use the ltsp server for pxe (by setting next-server and filename)
08:39
on ubuntu, you may also need to add the nbdroot=<ip:port> kernel command line argument to the pxelinux.cfg file

I want to make ltsp search in ldap ( not in /etc/passwd )
08:56
<Gadi>
right
08:56
has nothing to do with ltsp
08:56
just set up pam on the server as described
08:57
LTSP uses ssh, which means ssh needs to auth properly through pam
08:57
<X-TaZ>
If you read what i wrote, some conf file doesnt exist
08:58
<Gadi>
sudo auth-client-config -a -p lac_ldap
08:58
have you tried that?
08:59
<yoshi_>
we are thinking of a solution, in junior schools here in europe they are ok with running openoffice and all that administration stuff throught ltsp, but they want to run children programs like robby the rabbit and putt putt and so on also... so there is a need voor windows :( What we are thinking now: we put up a windows XP box and aktivate it so you can access RDP through the webbrowser ( this can be don) also there is a hack you can have multiple rdp connectio
08:59
is this a good approche you guys think
08:59
or is there another way to publish these specific games throught ltsp
08:59
<Gadi>
yoshi_: well, it doesnt sound legal
08:59
<X-TaZ>
Gadi, Error in updating the file: 'pam_account' not found
08:59
<Gadi>
the proper way is put in a windows terminal server
09:00
X-TaZ: what distro?
09:00
<X-TaZ>
Ubuntu 8.10
09:00
<Gadi>
sudo apt-get install libnss-ldap
09:00
<X-TaZ>
I havent finished configuring cuz some files are missing
09:00
<Gadi>
sudo dpkg-reconfigure ldap-auth-config
09:00
sudo auth-client-config -a -p lac_ldap
09:00
do those 3 steps
09:01
<yoshi_>
Gadi, well ripping off people with garbage software isnt' pretty either :) but however lets say i install a terminal server, is this the a good way to publish these kids learning games ? or is it done in another way ?
09:02
i read about seamless rdp also
09:02
<Gadi>
you dont need to publish them through a web browser
09:02
<X-TaZ>
Gadi : in sudo dpkg-reconfigure ldap-auth-config , should i choose the md5 encryption ?
09:02
<Gadi>
just access them with rdesktop
09:02
X-TaZ: if that is what is used in your server
09:03
<yoshi_>
Gadi, yes but i don't want the full desktop, but i could make a custom schell offcourse
09:03
<X-TaZ>
i dont know what is used in my server. I used default installation
09:03
<Gadi>
X-TaZ: then use defaults there too
09:03
<X-TaZ>
ok :)
09:03
<Gadi>
yoshi_: you can do seemless with the cendio application for the term server
09:04
<X-TaZ>
Well i done these 3 steps
09:04
root@app2:/etc/pam.d# sudo auth-client-config -a -p lac_ldap
09:04
Error in updating the file: 'pam_account' not found
09:04
<Gadi>
X-TaZ: have you modified pam by hand?
09:04
<yoshi_>
Gadi, do you have experiance with that does it work fast ?
09:04
<Gadi>
yoshi_: depends on the application
09:04
<X-TaZ>
i've modified the gdm file in /etc/pam.d like the doc said
09:04
<Gadi>
you can try it with XP pro legally with 1 rdp connection

<chrisjrob>
still trying to get nxclient screen script working. i now get a login prompt with SCREEN_07=nxclient and it almost gets to the point of logging in (indeed the session is created on the server) when X restarts.
10:00
<treyh>
rcmysoft: you should only have to run that if your ip changes

on the ML i read a comment stating that you should start x with -noreset switch, which i added to the end of the xinit line in the nxclient screen script (a mirror of the rdesktop one), but it made no difference.

has anybody tried to downgrade libX11 in Debian? I am curious how it affects everything
11:52
<ogra>
did you try the env var fix mentioned in the debian bug ?
11:52
if that works we could punch it into ldm until the lib is fixed
11:52
downgrading the lib will likely get you into driver trouble
11:52
<epsas>
yeah
11:53
<ogra>
since the drivers are linked against the lib version at build time
11:53
<epsas>
okay
11:53
where would i set the LD_ settings so that all the clients would see it
11:54
<ogra>
either in LDM with a hack to the env or in a XSession.d script on the server
11:55
<epsas>

Hi Folks - I'm still trying to get the nvidia drivers installed so that my thin clients can use them.

I've been working on this for several days, but still can't get it. I've created a new chroot environment. Anyone out there want to assist in setting this up from scratch?

12:03
<rcmysoft>
alkisg are you on stage?
12:05
<Mip5>
_UsUrPer_ - I'm downloading it now. When I tried this last time, it complained about not having the kernel sources. I don't know to specify them if they are not found.
12:06
Specifically, can the chrooted env access stuff outside it? If not, should I copy the sources to it? If so, where?
12:06
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: copy-paste the error once you get that.
12:06
we'll go from there
12:06

12:07* ogra would just go with the matching nvidia-glx-XXX package, thats precompiled

12:11
<_UsUrPeR_>
oh wait, except for my laptop... I used envyNG to install those drivers
12:12
<Mip5>
So - if I were going to use the available packages from the repositories - what *exactly* is the process. This is the part that I think is failing - not the actual drivers themselves, but the install into the chroot.
12:12

ogra - would setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/path/to/old/libx11" inside of /etc/X11/Xsession.d/10x11_xcbfix work?

12:21

12:21

Gadi, but it might have to be set before X on the client comes up
12:22
<Gadi>
ogra: CLIENT_ENV attaches to the ssh call to run Xsession
12:22* alkisg is going to try to put this to /etc/environment and restart X and do ssh -Y localhost firefox
12:22
<ogra>
Gadi, right
12:22
<Gadi>
libxcb is an xclient lib

12:39
<epsas>
so it should then
12:40
<treyh>
ogra: what rcmysoft was saying earlier about 8.10 is that the alternate installer weirds out of if you change the default ip subnet. everytime i tried to it didn't work right, and thats what he had done, so I told him to reinstall and leave it alone

it seemed to have something to do with network manager

which is why on my ltsp setups, i remove the network manager :)

12:47

heh
12:47
<_UsUrPeR_>
alkisg/treyh: what's going on with network manager? The only thing I would/should have filed a bug about is the dhcpd.conf presets for 8.10 and 9.04 alternate install CDs
12:47* ogra waits for _UsUrPeR_ to speak up and point to Gadi
12:48
<_UsUrPeR_>
\ O_o /
12:49
<treyh>
_UsUrPeR_: if I remember correctly, two things. it wouldn't hold the static ip for eth1 but would for eth0, and if for some reason you clicked on the network manager on the bar and then left clicked eth1 (to basically refresh it) ltsp would die
12:50
also tried to change the ip subnet on the 8.10 alternate installer and couldn't ever get it to work
12:50
seemed like i was missing something
12:50
<_UsUrPeR_>
treyh: what ubuntu derivative did you install? alternate or normal?
12:50
<treyh>
alternative
12:50
<_UsUrPeR_>
FI: alternate has not given me any problems aside from ltsp-localapps dhcpd.conf scheme
12:50
strange
12:50
<treyh>
but I was also using an USB eth for eth1
12:51

12:51
<ogra>
usb ethernet might be a udev issue actually ... udev writes these persistent-net.rules
12:51
<_UsUrPeR_>
K12 wasn't too bad either. They have some pretty succinct instructions for installation. I will admit, I have not tried using a USB eth adapter yet
12:52
<ogra>
so it enforces name assignmend during install
12:52
<treyh>
maybe that was it
12:52
<ogra>
if you unplug the usb adapter the device will be gone indeed, but the name assignment will persist
12:52
<_UsUrPeR_>
treyh: do you have the option of adding a second NIC to your server?
12:52
<ogra>
devicekit will solve all that
12:52
once its ready
12:53
<treyh>
_UsUrPeR_: yes it was a test environment but I switched to a real server with two nics
12:53
now I only use one nic, with a windows dhcp server
12:53
<_UsUrPeR_>
ahh~~
12:54
<treyh>
and I don't use the alternate installer
12:56
<_UsUrPeR_>

but it finished properly, right ?
13:00
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: ok. pastebot all that stuff after you try to install again
13:01
I know I have installed nvidia drivers on a client image before. Though it was in Fedora...
13:01
<Mip5>
ogra - it did appear to finish properly - yes
13:01
<_UsUrPeR_>
should be about the same
13:01
<ogra>
/initrd.img and /vmlinuz are just links to the actual files in /boot normally and lsb shouldnt choke when they are missing
13:01
anyway
13:01* ogra calls it a day
13:02
<_UsUrPeR_>
later
13:02
<Mip5>
ogra I did get this error: Errors were encountered while processing: console-setup
13:03
ogra - thanks for your help - I'll keep banging away and let y'all know what I find
13:03
_UsUrPer_ I'm going to install nvidia-glx-new, which looks like the right version for my chipset
13:03
<_UsUrPeR_>

13:05
<Mip5>
Can you remind me how to paste the errors? I think I'm not supposed to paste it here, but am supposed to do it some other way

<_UsUrPeR_>
yeah

<magjogui>
hello
13:11
somebody speak spanish here?
13:11
ok, if no body speak spanish
13:12
i need help with a little trouble with LTSP 5.0
13:12
13:12
13:12
13:12
<treyh>
magjogui: whats happening?
13:13
<magjogui>
i have troubles with local devices
13:13
<_UsUrPeR_>
magjogui: go ahead with your question.
13:13
<Mip5>
_UsUrPer_ - I posted the whole report incase there was something relevant that might hvae missed.
13:14
<treyh>
magjogui: so you can't get cdrom and usb sticks to work?
13:14
<magjogui>
the usb sticks and cdroms work
13:14
but
13:14
whe i try to umount in the terminal, i cant
13:14
how i can solve that?
13:14
<treyh>
so they are mounted automatically but they don't auto umount themselves
13:15
what distro you running
13:15
<magjogui>
ubuntu
13:15
8.10
13:15
<treyh>
8.10 or 9.04
13:15
<magjogui>
8.10
13:15
and 8.04
13:15
<treyh>
i think the solution would be to upgrade to 9.04
13:15
<magjogui>
i have 2 labs
13:15
<treyh>
and install ltspfs in the chroot
13:15
<magjogui>
actually i install 9.04 too
13:15
mmm
13:15
how?
13:16
i need to make a chroot
13:16
and then
13:16
<treyh>
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get update
13:16
<magjogui>
sudo apt-get install ltspfs ?
13:16
<treyh>
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get install ltspfs
13:16
<magjogui>
ok tell me
13:16
13:17
<treyh>
sudo ltsp-update-image
13:17
<magjogui>
13:17
thats its?
13:17
<treyh>
and then when you boot the client, it should automatically add and remove it
13:17
but of course
13:17
you could always try just installing ltspfs on the versions you have now
13:18
and you're using ldm correct?
13:18
or rdesktop
13:18
<magjogui>
ldm
13:18
<treyh>
yea that should do it
13:18
<magjogui>
13:18
<treyh>
try install ltspfs in the chroot first on the installs you have and then if not, upgrade to 9.04
13:18cliebow has joined #ltsp
13:18
<treyh>
yes
13:18
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: did you mount /proc?
13:19
<magjogui>
13:19
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: when you installed those drivers?
13:19
<Mip5>
_UsUrPer_ I *thought* I did, but I saw that same error. Let me double check.
13:20
<magjogui>
treyh are you still there?
13:20
<_UsUrPeR_>
magjogui: unmounting USB devices from a client is not needed
13:20
<treyh>
magjogui: yes?
13:20
<magjogui>
why? _UsUrPer
13:20
i am installed now
13:21
but i have the next error
13:21
Can not write log, openpty() failed (/dev/pts not mounted?)
13:21
Can not write log, openpty() failed (/dev/pts not mounted?)
13:21
Configurando ltspfs (0.5.5-0ubuntu1) ...
13:21
and thats it
13:21
13:22
<_UsUrPeR_>
magjogui: wait, when you say "unmount them intermianl" -- pertaining to USB devices, are those devices connected to the LTSP client or server?
13:22
<magjogui>
client
13:22
<treyh>
yea that version of ltspfs needs to be updated
13:22
i think to 0.5.10
13:22
but i think you have to use 9.04 to get it
13:22
<magjogui>
how i can do that?
13:23
jajaja
13:23
mmm
13:23
=(
13:24
treyh i have another question
13:24
<treyh>
magjogui: ok ask
13:24
<magjogui>
when i put a usb stick in my server all the terminals can see this usb, why? and how i can fix that?
13:25
<treyh>
i don't think there is a way to fix that
13:25
<magjogui>
ok
13:25
its a bug?
13:25
<treyh>
not sure
13:25
<Mip5>
_UsUrPer_ - arrrggg! I can't umount it, so I must have missed it....
13:25
<treyh>
let me check it real quick
13:25
<magjogui>
ok
13:26
<treyh>
on my 9.04 setup
13:26
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: rinse, repeat ;)
13:26
<magjogui>
ok
13:26
<Mip5>
So - if I redo the process and make sure that proc is mounted, that should fix it, right?
13:26
<_UsUrPeR_>
yeah
13:26
no need to re-create the client image or anything (I hope)
13:26
<Mip5>
okay - back in a bit....
13:27
<magjogui>
And another question, supously that i install ltspfs and finally i can umount the usb, obviously i need to put th LOCALDEV=True on my lts.conf ??
13:27
before try to umount on the clients?
13:28
<_UsUrPeR_>
magjogui: localdev=true should not be needed for normal LTSP operation
13:28
<magjogui>
ok
13:28
but
13:29
i cant umount the usb sticks on the terminals
13:29
=(
13:29
this is all my trouble
13:29
<_UsUrPeR_>
what happens if you pull the USB stick out?
13:29
because clients logged in should not be able to unmount by default.
13:29
<magjogui>
i can see the icon on the desktop
13:30
the usb stick icon
13:30
<_UsUrPeR_>
and it remains?
13:30
<magjogui>
just the icon
13:30
<_UsUrPeR_>
you're using ubuntu 9.04, correct?
13:30
<magjogui>
you cant acces
13:30
noup
13:30
8.
13:30
8.10
13:30
and 8.04.2
13:30
<_UsUrPeR_>
hmm
13:30
<magjogui>
and in the 2 its the same
13:30
=(
13:31
<treyh>
magjogui: will take me a few more to test
13:31
<Mip5>
_usUrPer_ - okay it looks like that took care of the errors. I also tried to reinstall nvidia drivers, and they didn't appear to need it.
13:31
<treyh>
i'm having to rebuild the image
13:31
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: so everything appears to have gone ok?
13:31
<Mip5>
I think so. The last thing I did was ltsp-update-kernels, but it didn't take any time at all, so I'm not sure if it actually worked
13:31
<_UsUrPeR_>
magjogui: what happens if you shut off a client that has a icon on the desktop?
13:31
does it re-appear?
13:32
<Mip5>
I'll check
13:32
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: ltsp-update-image or kernels?
13:32
<Mip5>
ltsp-update-kernels
13:32
<magjogui>
everything its ok
13:32
<_UsUrPeR_>
kernels normally takes almost no time
13:32
<Mip5>
okay good
13:32
<magjogui>
if i shut off
13:33
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: but you will need to run ltsp-update-image to have those nvidia changes take effect
13:33
<magjogui>
and actually i have another question do you know if i can change the gdm theme for my clients and how??
13:33
<Mip5>
Okay I'll run that now, edit lts.conf to use the modules, and then reboot
13:33
<_UsUrPeR_>
magjogui: yes you can change the login image. Unfortunately, I can't remember where that is :(
13:33
<magjogui>
and if i can change the menus and panels for all the clients ?
13:33
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: correct
13:33bobby_C has joined #ltsp
13:34
<_UsUrPeR_>
magjogui: about menu panels: I believe most of that is changeable too....
13:34
not all of it
13:34
<magjogui>
how? exist any tool?
13:34
13:34
?
13:36
treyh please let me know what happen with your test =)
13:37
<treyh>
magjogui: ok i plugged a usb stick in on the server, and it didn't show up on the client
13:37
let me test the client to make sure it does umount it
13:37
<_UsUrPeR_>
magjogui: I am not familiar with any tools that exist to change the desktop layout of a booted client. That may be something to ask again later when some other people are around
13:38
<magjogui>
ok thanks Usurper
13:38
Treyh : (
13:39
<treyh>
magjogui: sounds like you need to upgrade lol
13:39
<magjogui>
=(
13:39
but
13:39
i have another installation
13:39
and i have the same error
13:39
=(
13:40
<_UsUrPeR_>
magjogui: are you using the same USB key to test between both installations?
13:40
<magjogui>
yes
13:41
<_UsUrPeR_>
have you considered trying another USB key to ensure that it's not a problem with the key itself?
13:41
<magjogui>
yes
13:41
and i still have this error
13:41
=(
13:41
lol
13:42
<treyh>
did you try to reinstall ltspfs
13:42
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get update; sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get reinstall ltspfs
13:42
i think thats the correct syntax for reinstall
13:42
lol
13:43
<ltsppbot>
"Mip5" pasted "lts.conf" (27 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/335
13:43
<magjogui>
ok
13:43
let me try
13:44
<Mip5>
_UsUrPeR_ it's not working - I pasted my lts.conf file incase there's an error there
13:44
Is there a way to see whether the modules are actually present?
13:44
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: paste the client Xorg could you?
13:45
err I'm sorry, paste the client /var/log/xorg.<number>.log
13:45
<Mip5>
Sure - what's the best way to get that?
13:46
<_UsUrPeR_>
in console (screen_02) on shell, scp xorg.<number>.log to your server
13:46
<Mip5>
ok - brb
13:46
<_UsUrPeR_>
then paste that from the server on pastebot
13:52magjogui has quit IRC
13:53
<Mip5>
_UsUrPeR_ - it doesn't look like ssh is goign on - I can't connect to the server from that cli on screen 2
13:54
<pmatulis_>
hi gang, i'm trying out a new thin pxe client. i get no display. i see that i386.img keeps being downloaded over and over (one cycle of log messages: http://www.pastebin.ca/1421832)
13:54
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: you may need to create a password for root in the chroot
13:54
mip5: and install openssh-server on the chroot
13:54
so you can ssh into the client
13:54
from the server
13:55
<Mip5>
Okay - so I do that the same I've been trying to install the nvidia package into the chroot, right?
13:55
<_UsUrPeR_>
pmatulis_: what pxe client are you using? also, what ltsp version, and what OS is the server?
13:56
mip5: repeat that.
13:56
<Mip5>
ok
13:56
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: I don't quite understand what you had typed :)
13:57
mip5: to install openssh, mount /proc in /opt/ltsp/i386
13:57
chroot into the image
13:57
<Mip5>
right - that's what I was trying to say, thank you
13:57
<_UsUrPeR_>
and apt-get install openssh-server
13:57
also while youre in there, passwd root
13:58
and give it a password
13:58
<Mip5>
ah - ok
13:58
<_UsUrPeR_>
so you can telnet in as root later
13:58
err ssh
13:58
not telnet :)
13:58
<Mip5>
right - I knew what you meant ;-)
13:58
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: client is by quanmax. hmm, vga is intel 945GM/GMS/GME..., might be due to a jaunty bug. so, yes, i'm using Ubuntu 9.04 serverside
13:59
<Mip5>
fwiw - is there a difference between chrooting first, and then mounting proc, or mounting proc first (to /opt/lts/i386/proc) and then chrooting?
13:59
<_UsUrPeR_>
hmm.
14:00
<Mip5>
i noticed that ogra said it one way, and the documentation describes the other
14:00
<_UsUrPeR_>
pmatulis_: you see nothing output on your monitor as the client boots?
14:00rjune has quit IRC
14:01
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: i get the standard dhcp initialization stuff, then the splash screen, then nothing
14:02
<_UsUrPeR_>
pmatulis_: do you have a lts.conf created yet
14:02
?
14:03
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: yes, i have another client working well
14:03
<_UsUrPeR_>
pmatulis_: the same model and brand of client?
14:03
pmatulis_: could you pastebot the lts.conf you currently have?
14:03
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: no, this is new client h/w
14:04
_UsUrPeR_: one moment
14:04
<cliebow>
pmatulis..maybe disable the slash so you can see whats up?
14:04
<_UsUrPeR_>

so "disable the splash" really means change menu.lst in chroot and rebuild image?
14:08
<cliebow>
well..pxelinux,cfg/default?
14:08
something like that
14:09
<_UsUrPeR_>
pmatulis_: change the file in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default
14:09
in there, remove the "quiet" command
14:09
<cliebow>
or splash.
14:09
just comment quiet splash
14:09
<_UsUrPeR_>
yeah :)
14:09
maybe both
14:10
<pmatulis_>
ok
14:11
rebooting now...
14:12
<Mip5>
_UsUrPeR_ - I still can't scp the durn file.... Can I go the other way, and ssh into the client? I just tried and got a "Your account has expired..." I've never seen that before
14:13
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: never tried to ssh into a client before is all. :)
14:14
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_, cliebow: no good, just when ldm is supposed to kick in black screen comes up and it goes into an undending cycle of downloading the image
14:14
<Mip5>
So - I have 2 interfaces on the server. I should try to scp from teh client (192.168.0.196) to the inside address of the server, right (192.168.0.254)
14:14
<pmatulis_>
no suspicious messages onscreen
14:15
<cliebow>
unending cycle of trying to start x?
14:15
<Mip5>
I get "Permission denied, (publickey, pasword).
14:16
<pmatulis_>
cliebow: yeah, screen flickers, then nothing
14:16
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: wait, I got it
14:16
<cliebow>
what u=is your video card on the client?
14:17
<pmatulis_>
cliebow: yeah, see above
14:17
<_UsUrPeR_>
login to the client w/normal login via ldm
14:17
in there, open a terminal window and run ltsp-localapps xterm
14:17

14:23
<Mip5>
I think it's going - I get prompted for a password when I ssh root@192.168.0.196
14:24
<pmatulis_>
cliebow: no dice re vesa
14:24
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: in terminal on the client (screen_02) run /etc/init.d/ssh start
14:24
<Mip5>
okay
14:24
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: also, you made the password for root on the client, right?
14:25
<Mip5>
yes - I made the password (passwd root, and then entered it)
14:25
I get the same error - though I didn't try to restar ssh, just start. Let me try a restart
14:25
<_UsUrPeR_>
and when you're trying to ssh into the client, you're doing ssh -l root xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx right?
14:26
<Mip5>
no - I used just what I typed, which usually works. I'll try your way though
14:26
<cliebow>
pmatulis_, same thing huh? i could swear yesterday someone was using vesa with 945 chipset...and was asking to add the 945 rdrivers to the chroot
14:27
<Mip5>
no - I used just what I typed, which usually works. I'll try your way though.

14:30
your password will be the same as the server password
14:30
<Mip5>
cool - let me try that...

<Mip5>
_UsUrPeR_ I get the same error (going from server to client
14:33
<cliebow>
pmatulis_, i cant remember what ogra said about the 945 drivers..
14:33
<_UsUrPeR_>
pmatulis_: did you have any luck with VESA?
14:34
<Mip5>
Your account is expired....
14:34
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: did you ltsp-update-image?
14:34
<Mip5>
No
14:34
<_UsUrPeR_>
:)
14:34
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: no, vesa didn't help
14:34
<_UsUrPeR_>
every time anything is changed in the chroot, it has to be compressed with ltsp-update-image so it can be sent to the client
14:34
<Mip5>
So, should I do that every time I make a change to the client?
14:35
<_UsUrPeR_>
correct
14:35
every time
14:35
that only applies to the chroot though. Not lts.conf
14:35
pmatulis_: have you tried to boot the client with a livecd of some sort? I am wondering what drivers it normally uses...

_UsUrPeR_: that's an idea, not yet
14:38
_UsUrPeR_: hmm, actually, i think both these clients have ubuntu installed locally. going to check what drivers get used
14:38
ogra: you there?
14:39
<_UsUrPeR_>
I think he's out for the day
14:44
<Mip5>
_UsUrPeR_ still getting the errors: client -> server Permission denied (publickey, password)
14:45

14:49
<_UsUrPeR_>
:/
14:49
ok, how about this: just tell me what errors you see in /var/log/Xorg.<number>.log :)
14:49
<Mip5>
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing...
14:50
<ltsppbot>
"pmatulis" pasted "EE in Xorg.0.log" (5 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/337
14:50
<Mip5>
I'll need to edit lts.conf so that it tries to use the nvidia driver, otherwise I haven't been seeing the errors
14:50
<_UsUrPeR_>
pmatulis_: what is your resolution?
14:50
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: so this is what happened when i booted the client with jaunty
14:51
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: yeah, do that
14:51
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: how do i find that?
14:53
<_UsUrPeR_>
lts.conf: XSERVER = "nvidia"
14:53
boot the client
14:53
and if (when) the ldm login screen fails, just switch to screen_02 and vi /var/log/Xorg.<number>.log
14:54
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: why nvidia?
14:55
_UsUrPeR_: k, wrong guy
14:55
<_UsUrPeR_>
lol yeah
14:55
whoops :)
14:55
<Mip5>
That would be me, (the nvidia guy)....wish I were an intel guy today
14:55

_UsUrPeR_: HDD
14:58
<_UsUrPeR_>
pmatulis_: if so, tell me what you see for the driver listed under "device" in /etx/X11/xorg.conf
14:59
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: it's appears braindead, only an Identifier line under "Device"
15:00
<_UsUrPeR_>
hmm. does the machine boot into ldm?
15:00
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: no
15:00
<_UsUrPeR_>
oh :)
15:00
try a live CD
15:01
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: don't have a device to attach right now
15:01
<_UsUrPeR_>
:/
15:01
<pmatulis_>
_UsUrPeR_: will try tomorrow, i'll check in here tomorrow
15:01
<Mip5>
_UsUrPeR_ when I try to boot using the XSERVER=nvidia, it fails (like we expect), however, I can't get screen02 working either. It just blinks.
15:01
<_UsUrPeR_>
ok :)
15:02
mip5: XSERVER = "nvidia"
15:02
nomenclature matters in lts.conf
15:02pmatulis_ has quit IRC
15:07
<Mip5>
Thanks - should it be "nvidia" in the module entry as well?
15:07
and what about glx?
15:09
<_UsUrPeR_>
hmm
15:10
what's glx? :)
15:11
<Mip5>
someone mentioned having entry: X4_MODULE_01=glx, and I'm wondering whether it should be in quotes or not.
15:11
<_UsUrPeR_>
oh. hmm... dunno about that
15:11
maybe comment that out until we have a working nvidia driver :)
15:12
then we can worry about the glx stuff
15:12
<Mip5>
okay - trying that now
15:14
Still no go - just blinking.
15:14
<alkisg>
Mip5: why does it blink? What do the logs say?
15:15
<Mip5>
Well, I can't see the logs on the client when it blinks, b/c I can't login to the terminal
15:15
<alkisg>
Mip5: you could either install an ssh server, or get a shell and run X manually, so that it only runs once.
15:16litlebuda has joined #ltsp

When I had installed nvidia, I had used the following lines: XSERVER=nvidia
15:17
MODULE_01=nvidia
15:17
X4_MODULE_01=glx
15:18
<Mip5>
Right - that's what I had tried. You have no quotes on either of those, right?
15:18
<alkisg>
No
15:19
Well, a good start would be to see what the logs say...
15:20
<Mip5>
THanks - I'm definitely struggling here. Right now, my machine isn't booting into x, and that's also killing my shell screen. SHol
15:20
should I comment out ldm on screen 07 (in the hope that I can get shell on 02 to work?
15:21
<alkisg>
Yes
15:23
<Mip5>
Okay - I'm in. I dont see errors in Xorg.1.log, but it's a short (one screenful) file
15:23
Where else should I look?
15:23
Can I examine something related to modules loading (or failing to load)?
15:24
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: see anything in /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
15:25nikosapi has joined #ltsp
15:26
<Mip5>
okay - I see that "nvidia" is indicated as the driver.
15:27

nothing in /var/log/Xorg.?.log?
15:27
<Mip5>
In the SubSction "Display" sections, all the Viewports are 0 0 - which seems strange
15:27
<nikosapi>
How do you guys handle the kernel config for mounting of / over the network? Do you load a bunch of network/nfs modules into an initrd image or is it a custom ltsp kernel?
15:29
<alkisg>
Mip5: try to startx, to see if it starts - or to get an error log if it doesn't.
15:29
<_UsUrPeR_>
nikosapi: to qualify that question a bit: normally / is not mounted on the client. The client just accesses the server drives through the server.
15:29
<Mip5>
Okay - using things like "more" in this terminal don't appear to work, so I wasn't seeing much. I opened the log file using vi so I can scroll.
15:30
<alkisg>
(there's less :))
15:30
`less <file>`, I mean
15:31
You can also do: scp /var/run/Xorg.0.log username@server:/tmp/
15:31
<nikosapi>
_UsUrPeR_: ah, I didn't know that. It doesn't really matter, I'm just curious about what kind of kernel/initrd that you guys pass to the client :)
15:37
<_UsUrPeR_>
nikosapi: the kernels are *usually* a compressed version of the kernel the server is running
15:38
<nikosapi>
so, no modifications? even to the initrd?
15:39* nikosapi is trying to wrap his head around how ltsp actually works
15:39
<Mip5>
errors on startx: NVIDIA(0): Failed to load NVIDIA kernel module! and NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting*** and Screen(s) found, buit none have a usable configuration, and finally, Fatal server error: no screens found giving up (xinit: Connection reset by peer (errno 104): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

it's mostly a learning experience
15:45
<_UsUrPeR_>
nikosapi: so are you thinking about using LTSP for your MCPC? Or you just want to try booting?
15:46
<nikosapi>
I'd like to do it without LTSP, otherwise it would probably be too easy :P
15:47
<_UsUrPeR_>
I beg to differ. Media transferred from server to client cause a very bit problem with video outputs
15:47
s/bit/big
15:48
<nikosapi>
I'd probably end up using a "fat" client configuration
15:48
<_UsUrPeR_>
yeah, that may be more your speed
15:50
<Mip5>
_UsUrPeR_ - so the error log indicates: (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load NVIDIA kernel module!
15:51
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: and there were no errors with the chroot when installing?
15:51
<Mip5>
How can we determine why that is failing?
15:52
<nikosapi>
have a look in your dmesg: dmesg
15:52
<Mip5>
UsUrPeR - do you mean when installing the nvidia-glx from aptitude? No.
15:52
<nikosapi>
err, dmesg | less
15:53
<_UsUrPeR_>
mip5: did VESA ever work for you?
15:53
mip5: crud, I'm about to be getting out of here
15:54
<Mip5>
VESA does work.
15:54
Thanks for your help today UsUrPeR. I'll hit it again tomorrow
15:55
<_UsUrPeR_>
np. Hope someone else will be around too :)
15:55
later guys
15:55* _UsUrPeR_ leaves the room, but he didn't shut the door... what a jerk
15:57
<Mip5>
dmesg | less didn't allow scrolling, but I cat'd it to a file that I opened with vi. The 2nd to last line is cdpinger [4042]: segfault at 6f72647f eip b7f5a8a5 esp bfb91700 error 4
15:59
<nikosapi>
I don't really know what that means, but generally if a kernel module won't load there would be a clear message in dmesg...
16:07
<Mip5>
nikosapi - ok, thanks
