hello :) i can not login from thinclients. No answer from server - how can i fix this?
06:56
<alkisg>
sudo ltsp-update-sshkeys && sudo ltsp-update-image
06:58
<zeitsofa>
hmm ok thanks i try it. did i have to run update-sshkeys everytime befor i update the image?
07:00
<alkisg>
No, only when the server IP is changed

alkisg: that was an interesting test case
07:59
any idea what the cause is then?
08:00
<alkisg>
denisesball: see the follow up on the list, it's about the pixmas
08:00
pixmaps
08:00
<denisesball>
list?
08:00
<alkisg>
On the ltsp mailing list... ah, you didn't see it..
08:01
<denisesball>
no, i'm not on the list
08:01
<alkisg>
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=575523
08:01
that's the test case, but this has more info in it:
08:01
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=395260
08:01
<denisesball>
ah, so you did file a bug. nice!
08:02
<alkisg>
Also, if you run: MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE=1 firefox
08:02
...then it doesn't use pixmaps, so the clients shouldn't crash
08:02
<denisesball>
what is pixmaps exactly?
08:03* alkisg is the middle of something, bbiab...

did anybody know how i have to configure dhcp3-server to use two pxe servers?
10:29
<atkuepker>
we usually end up declaring next-server and manually adding the option root-path lines to dhcpd that point to a given server.
10:32gnunux has quit IRC

<zeitsofa>
hmm i crate a nopaste http://nopaste.info/e507f43d0f.html how is the pleace for the second "next-server"?
10:37otavio has joined #ltsp
10:37
<atkuepker>
I usually put it in the subnet declaration, but I don't know whether that's required or not. I'd suggest reading through the documentation for DHCP
10:40
<zeitsofa>
http://nopaste.info/88e357d2e9.html :( i think thats not the right place for it. im search in dhcp doc for a solution. thx :)

hello ltsp
11:42
quick question: is it recommended to use RDIMMs or UDIMMs for a LTSP server?
11:46Faithful has joined #ltsp

maybe i should come back at night

<alkisg>
Give it some time... :)
11:49
<zeitsofa>
hughessd: we have RDIMMs and it works fine.
11:50
hughessd: because wi didn't have UDIMMs for our server :)

sufficient memory and stable hardware is all that really matters, IMHO. Whether the memory is ECC Registered or not hasn't one of the more critical aspects of our dozen or so LTSP deployments.
11:53
We're using IBM X3550 and x3400 servers nowadays. They run quite well and have a rather good warranty. While I used to be an IBMer, I've not ever had any problems with the hardware either.
11:54
and the minor things that have come up were repaired promptly and without hassle.

<denisesball>
alkisg: MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE=1 isn't an lts.conf option correct?
12:00
<alkisg>
No, it's an environment option
12:01
I.e. close firefox, open a terminal, and type:
12:01
MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE=1 firefox
12:01komunista has quit IRC
12:01
<denisesball>
yeah i can't really tell all the techs to do that...is there a way to set it system wide?
12:01
<alkisg>
Then go to the page that crashed your client - it shouldn't crash now.
12:01
Yes, in /etc/profile or somewhere similar.
12:02
<denisesball>
ok i will try that
12:02
and the bugs you sent me, looks like an old issue huh?
12:02
<alkisg>
Yup
12:02
So I'm not too optimistic about a quick solution
12:03
<denisesball>
sucks, and its just a firefox thing too. konqueror doesn't have this issue. also, old firefox doesnt seem to have the issue either
12:03
i have debian 4 servers with iceweasel 2.0 and they dont crash
12:09
alkisg: "MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE=1 firefox" still couldnt load the site
12:09
did you have luck with it?
12:10
<alkisg>
Yes, it worked fine. Did you already have firefox open when you ran it?
12:10
<denisesball>
no i rebooted the whole terminal and logged in and ran it from terminal
12:10
<alkisg>
I tried with an image that should cause 800MB of RAM usage by Xorg, so I'm pretty sure that works around the problem in my case.
12:10
(vbox client)
12:10
<denisesball>
this is with the default NBD swap and X_RAMPERC set to 80
12:10
<alkisg>
(with 128 MB RAM)
12:10
<denisesball>
is your example public?
12:11
<alkisg>
Yes, it's on the bug report
12:11
<denisesball>
jgarigen.com still hung it like crazy
12:12
clicking your 5120x5120 without setting MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE=1 completely hangs the term
12:13
<alkisg>
distro/version?
12:13
<denisesball>
ubuntu 10.04
12:13
<hughessd>
zeitsofa & atkuepker: thank you for the info. very helpful.
12:13
<alkisg>
Yes, without that it also hangs for me too
12:13
But with that, it doesn't
12:13
<denisesball>
ok lemme try with it
12:14
i guess i misread the your bug saying that one was ok
12:14
<hughessd>
sorry for taking so long to respond. stepped out for a sec.
12:14
<alkisg>
jgarigen doesn't hang here
12:15
Ooops scratch that.
12:15
The image loaded, but _then_ it hanged
12:15
<denisesball>
this is such a big problem i think
12:16
lots of sites embed images improperly
12:16
<alkisg>
So there must be some other case which uses pixmaps other than the big image
12:27
<denisesball>
even with MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE=1 loading your 5120x5120 crashes my term
12:28
should i increase my X_RAMPERC=80 to 90 or even try removing it?
12:28atkuepker has quit IRC
12:30Faithful has quit IRC
12:33
<alkisg>
It shouldn't matter.
12:33
<denisesball>
alkisg: i let it go and it JUST loaded
12:33
<alkisg>
It shouldn't use any xorg memory at all, in this case.
12:33
<denisesball>
so took almost 6 minutes to load that image
12:34
<alkisg>
Do you have compcache enabled?
12:34
<denisesball>
and the terminal was completely unusable that whole time
12:34
<alkisg>
(== the default?)
12:34
<denisesball>
what is that?
12:34
<alkisg>
compcache takes away 25% of your RAM to make a swap file out of it
12:35
For low ram clients this isn't good, and if you have an nbd swap file, you don't even need it
12:35
So if you put nocompcache in pxelinux.cfg/default, you free that 25% of RAM
12:35
<denisesball>
i havent done anything like that
12:35
just using the nbdswap
12:35
<alkisg>
That's the main cause of the "client goes slow" problems
12:36
(other than ldm_directx, that is)
12:37Faithful has joined #ltsp
12:42
<denisesball>
so alkisg are you suggesting i enable that then?
12:43
<alkisg>
Yup I suggested that to you yesterday...
12:43
It helps a lot for 128 MB clients.
12:43
(it's not specific to this case; it just frees an additional 30MB RAM on your clients)
12:44
<denisesball>
sorry dont know how i missed that
12:44
is it in the manual?
12:44
<alkisg>
No
12:44
It's not specific to LTSP, it's an Ubuntu thing
12:45
<denisesball>
ok, so where should i look to find out how to do it?
12:46
<alkisg>
gedit /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default
12:46
And put "nocompcache" right next to "quiet splash"

13:22
<Ghid0rah>
I currently have 1 LTSP server running on a VM
13:22
In production we have 3 LTSP Servers running like LTSP 4.2?
13:22
running fedora
13:23
I'm attempting to replace those 3
13:23
I had wanted to cluster 3 new ones... but I don't think I'm going to get to it in time.
13:24
<Lns>
nice
13:25
Anyone here using KOffice (KPresenter in particular) with LTSP? If so, how does it stack up against OOo Impress as far as stability and usage on a terminal?
13:37
<denisesball>
alkisg: do i need to do ltsp-update-image after adding to /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default?

Yes
15:01
(you may need to do /sbin/lsmod)
15:02
<denisesball>
1 sec, sorry
15:02
<alkisg>
Because it looks to me that you have 64 MB NBD_SWAP and 30 MB compcache swap.
15:04
<denisesball>
append ro initrd=initrd.img quiet splash nocompcache nbdport=2000

1 sec until my term is back up
15:04

Did you change your nbdswapd.conf to 93MB ?
15:04
<denisesball>
i actually deleted that file to put it back to default
15:06
testagent@ltsp133:~$ lsmod | grep ram

ramzswap 6362 1
15:06
xvmalloc 4074 1 ramzswap

lzo_decompress 2189 1 ramzswap
15:06
lzo_compress 1853 1 ramzswap
15:07
<alkisg>
Right, so compcache wasn't disabled.
15:07
Hmm...
15:07
(you're losing 30 MB to that)
15:07
<denisesball>
yeah, i wonder why
15:07
<alkisg>
It's a technique to make the live cd work with less than 512 RAM
15:08
<denisesball>
oh i think i know why
15:08
im booting using gpxe over the WAN with the commnands you taught me
15:09
kernel /ltsp/i386/vmlinuz ro initrd=initrd.img ip=${ip}:${next-server}:${gateway}:${netmask}:${hostname}:eth0:none
15:09
initrd /ltsp/i386/initrd.img
15:09
<alkisg>
Yeah I was about to ask you to cat /proc/cmdline
15:09
<denisesball>
sorry i didnt even think of that
15:09
<alkisg>
So yup, put "nbd_proxy=false nocompcache" there
15:09
(nbd_proxy will save you same more MB and speed)
15:10
<denisesball>
k, lemme make a new floppy
15:10
<alkisg>
Just press Ctrl+B
15:10
<denisesball>
oh, itll still load the floppy?
15:10
or u want me to type all that?
15:10
<alkisg>
Ah, you'll have to write all of it, so nah...
15:10
Make another floppy
15:11
<denisesball>
yeah, too long and id probly typo and it gets frustrating
15:11
ive done it a bunch before u taught me about the flopyy lol
15:12
does it matter what line i put that on? first, last middle etc?
15:13
obviously before boot vmlinuz
15:14
<alkisg>
It does matter, you need to put it on the same line as quiet splash
15:15
<denisesball>
i dont specify that in mine though
15:15
my script - http://pastebin.com/wnUD78ac
15:16

In the kernel line

i have nothing open in either except for gnome-terminal
