<eu^static-108-34>
hello all!
18:29
<alkisg>
Hello eu^static-108-34
18:29
<eu^static-108-34>
I've encountered a problem that I would like to air out here
18:29
<alkisg>
Shoot
18:29
<eu^static-108-34>
Hi Alkisg!
18:29
I have a vlan situation
18:29
where vlan2 cannot boot from the ltsp located at vlan1
18:30
It was very easy to do before where I had used Linux isc-dhcp-server on both sides, the option next-server just handed it off to the dhcp server on vlan1
18:31
<alkisg>
What are the restrictions, you have to use isc-dhcp where the clients are, or are you flexible?
18:31
<eu^static-108-34>
But since I am not doing dhcp anymore with the new ltsp/dnsmasq server, I've encountered this problem
18:31
very flexible, just looking for the easiest fastest solution
18:32
right now I'm letting pfsense to the dhcp on the vlan1 side where the ltsp server resides
18:33
<alkisg>
This is the isc-dhcp config for ltsp: https://ltsp.org/advanced/isc-dhcp-server/
18:33
Now I guess dhcp requests can't reach the other vlan, right? I don't know vlans well
18:33
So you need a dhcp server on vlan2
18:33
<eu^static-108-34>
no I have no problems one side seeing the other
18:34
<alkisg>
Then why do you need a dhcp server on vlan2? Can't the ltsp server just use the usual proxy mode?
18:35
<eu^static-108-34>
I have /etc/dhcpd/dhcpd.conf on the vlan2 side working fine, and it was working with the next-server option pointing to the other vlan where the ltsp server sits but now that is not working because on the vlan1 side, I have pfsense handling the dhcp
18:35
<alkisg>
next-server is essentially the tftp server
18:35
so you want that to point to ltsp
18:36
<eu^static-108-34>
I was running out of ip addresses with just one vlan and the guy before me set the initial vlans up
18:36
<alkisg>
Hrm? Instead of just increasing the subnet?
18:36
<eu^static-108-34>
I did that but that's not working.
18:36
<alkisg>
Aren't vlans for safety, to separate management from users?
18:37
Do you have some linux screen on vlan2 that you can share?
18:37
!vnc-dide
18:37
<ltspbot>
vnc-dide: To share your screen with me, run this: sudo apt-get --yes install x11vnc; x11vnc -connect srv1-dide.ioa.sch.gr - this is a reverse connection, it doesn't need port forwarding etc.
18:37
<alkisg>
To test the result of ipconfig, tftp etc
18:37
<eu^static-108-34>
It's an easy way around running out of ips, when they were initially setup with class c's
18:37
ok one sec

ok alkisg, this is me here now
18:39
<alkisg>
OK
18:39

vnc-dide: To share your screen with me, run this: sudo apt-get --yes install x11vnc; x11vnc -connect srv1-dide.ioa.sch.gr - this is a reverse connection, it doesn't need port forwarding etc.
18:39
<Peter-LTSP-Vlans>
ok
18:39
<alkisg>
The bestest way would be if you had some pc with virtualbox on it, so that we could even test a vm ltsp client in bridged mode
18:40
But even without it, we'll see dhcp, tftp etc
18:40
<Peter-LTSP-Vlans>
You'll be connecting right into the ltsp server, we have virtualbox, epoptes, etc

<alkisg>
Peter-LTSP-Vlans: is any of these in vlan2?
18:44
<Peter-LTSP-Vlans>
no
18:44
<alkisg>
Of the epoptes clients
18:44
Can you boot something with linux in vlan2 ?
18:44
<Peter-LTSP-Vlans>
I can get you connected to a box on that side of the fence if you like
18:44
<alkisg>
Great, please do
18:44
ssh, whatever you like
18:48
Peter-LTSP-Vlans: ltsp suggests dnsmasq, but isc-dhcp is fine too,
18:48
which one doyou prefer?
18:49
I have more experience with dnsmasq, but I believe I can make isc-dhcp work as well
18:49
<eu^static-108-34>
do you mean on the ltsp side?
18:49
<alkisg>
On vlan2
18:49
The ltsp side, does it have any ltsp clients?
18:49
<eu^static-108-34>
I already have isc-dhcp working so I'd rather stay with that
18:49
<alkisg>
OK
18:49
(08:49:42 PM) alkisg: The ltsp side, does it have any ltsp clients?
18:50
<eu^static-108-34>
oh yea, that's working fine over there
18:50
<alkisg>
OK
18:50
<eu^static-108-34>
You could start any one of those pcs in the epoptes groups to start one if you like
18:50
<alkisg>
We'll need to fix dhcp first
18:51
<eu^static-108-34>
ok
18:56
<alkisg>
eu^static-108-34: I've sent WOL on after-school1, is that ok?
18:56
Will it reach the other vlan?
18:56
<eu^static-108-34>
yes
18:56
<alkisg>
ok
18:57
<eu^static-108-34>
that one is on vlan1 side
18:57
we can start a vm on the vlan2 side
18:57
<alkisg>
Ah, no we want ... right
18:57
<eu^static-108-34>
watch the virtual monitor
18:57
<alkisg>
Great
18:58
And off it goes :)
18:58
On the first try :)
18:58
<eu^static-108-34>
Yay!
18:58
It would have taken me a hell of a lot longer lol
18:58
<alkisg>
If you see that real clients are as slow as this one, you could also use http ipxe
18:58
Hehe, experience in a topic does matter
18:58
Try to login to verify that everything is in order
18:59
<eu^static-108-34>
ok
18:59
<alkisg>
Nice login screen wallpaper!
19:00
<eu^static-108-34>
Thank you
19:00
<alkisg>
Great, closing vnc
19:00
<eu^static-108-34>
It all seems to be working perfectly, thank you very much!
19:00
<alkisg>
You're welcome :)
19:00
<eu^static-108-34>
I'll use your email again ;-)
19:00
<alkisg>
Thank you too then!!!
19:01
You're very kind
19:01
<eu^static-108-34>
well thank you. I just have to go there now to run the epoptes-client -c command on them so they show up in epoptes
19:01
I love that app
