Question - Just upgraded from Hardy to Lucid and am getting the tftp T01 'File not found' error on client boot.
01:23
I edited /etc/default/tftpd-hpa to change the TFTP_DIRECTORY to /var/lib/tftpboot and added --secure to TFTP_OPTIONS. I restarted the tftpd-hpa service. What am I missing?

<markit>
hi ppl :) hi alkisg, still on holiday? until when?
11:07
<alkisg>
Hi markit, I have leave of absense for phd, until the next september (not this one)
11:08
No real holidays though, too much work. How are you?
11:08
<markit>
alkisg: I'm fine, on holiday at home to try to finish elementary school ltsp server
11:09
I'm documenting and preparing ruby scripts for basic setups and students account creation... it slows down a lot the preparation
11:09
also because I'm comparing with what I did and documented for 10.04 kubuntu (now I'm using 11.04)
11:09toscalix has joined IRC (toscalix!~toscalix@77.208.170.169)
11:10
<markit>
and having 3 points where things are documented and referenced is a nightmare, I must find some better solution
11:10
(one has been create a "generic basic setup" script where you specify the kind of school and then installs the related programs)
11:10
I do hope that italc will work, otherwise I'm in a real mess
11:11
I've seen 2.0 has been announced, but I've not found any kubuntu 11.04 package so far
11:11
<alkisg>
It's final? Not beta still?
11:11
<markit>
and I will have to fight with teacher's ignorance about computers too
11:11
alkisg: on the site there is no reference, but in ML or other places is "final", AFAIU
11:12

11:13
<alkisg>
Cool, I hope it doesn't crash all of the time now
11:13
Does the developer still care about linux compatibility? Or he's only testing on windows now?
11:14
<markit>
alkisg: thanks for scaring me so much
11:14
;P
11:14
btw, why did you not decided to simply fork the project and create a GNU-ony one?
11:15
<alkisg>
Haha that wasn't my intention, I just hated trying to get it to work for a few months, and trying to fix bugs etc, and finally having to create my own...
11:15
Fork italc? What for? I don't like its possibilities
11:15
*features
11:15
<markit>
alkisg: as far as I remember, your one is italc + class management, but I just need the "screen sharing/monitoring" stuff
11:16
but I need a reliable one (and with italian UI, lol)
11:16
there is nothing worse than a crash on the teacher's console
11:16
and at elementary schools the screen share/monitor is a paramount feature
11:17
wondering why my experience was that italc crashed a lot (I dropped it) while talking with someone else involved in schools seems that it works fine
11:17
<alkisg>
(moment, phone...)
11:17
<markit>
sure, NP :)
11:18* markit wonders if is Tobias Doerffel that is calling alkisg for some suggestions

11:27
<alkisg>
markit: my "screen sharing/monitoring" part is less than 500 lines, and it has twice the features and speed of italc
11:27toscalix has left IRC (toscalix!~toscalix@77.208.170.169, Remote host closed the connection)
11:27
<alkisg>
That's why I didn't want to fork the italc code
11:28toscalix has joined IRC (toscalix!~toscalix@77.208.170.169)
11:29
<alkisg>
italc in some labs works fine, while in some others it crashes every few minutes, and in some others every few seconds
11:29
I hope the new 2.0 version runs fine in most labs, that will make a lot of people happy
11:30
Another reason I didn't fork italc was that i wanted to be able to run it on 64 mb clients
11:30
Now my client needs < 1 MB RAM
11:50
<markit>
alkisg: ehm, < 1MB? my alarm clock has as much ram, lol
11:51
alkisg: is easy to isolate/drop those 500 lines and make what I need work, while waiting your phd to finish and your project to get the attention it deserver?
11:51
s/is/it is
12:05
<alkisg>
markit: if you know your way around python, gtk, twisted (networking library), and shell, sure
12:05
But we'll be separating the classroom management part from the server administration part anyway, into 2 programs
12:15
<markit>
I know, but if italc fails I'm in a tremendous hurry
12:16
all the migration will be considered a failure
12:16
I would love you will do the split, sure I will not be able to do as good as you.
12:17
(and that I will be able to do in some way is all to be proved)
12:17
<alkisg>
The split isn't really necessary for you to use sch-scripts, you can just hide the menus you don't want the teachers to have
12:18
But anyway, if italc fails, you can use netsupport or something, some of the commercial apps have linux versions
12:18
<markit>
I don't want any proprietary software, is the key point of the migration
12:18
<alkisg>
Sure. But if you *have* to?
12:18
Then you'll consider it a failure and get back to using *only* preprietary software?
12:19
That doesn't make sense... :)
12:19
<markit>
I know, but I've forced to forget a lot of proprietary software because user's are lazy, only "you can't do" works with them
12:19
and makes them use their brain and adopt different solutions
12:20
and in any case I would have to pay with my money
12:20
because the budget has already been defined
12:20
and I would prefer give them to you than to a proprietary sw
12:20
<alkisg>
Another approach if italc crashes would be to pay his developers to fix it
12:20
<markit>
alkisg: I've had the feeling that he does not care much about input from userbase
12:21
but I would prefer to try this road, sure
12:21
<alkisg>
I got the feeling he cares about money though :)
12:21
<markit>
lol :)
12:21
<alkisg>
He only continued to work on italc once he got funding from some german company, afaik
12:22
That's a good thing, I don't blame him for that
12:22
<markit>
well, in any case is a shame if he does not receives some founding... foss at school is so important, and his is a key component
12:22
alkisg: may I talk with you in private?
12:22
<alkisg>
Sure

Hyperbyte, i have a print spooler that keeps erroring out and needs to be reset... i'm trying to find a way to do it automatically.

14:09
<Hyperbyte>
That doesn't sound like fun. :P
14:12
Not for a saturday at least.
14:14
<andygraybeal>
yea, it's no fun - it's MS Windows and the log file doesn't appear until after you manually 'dump' the log from the spooler applicatikon.. it's rediculous
14:16
the error it spits out is a visual basic errror.. permission denied.. microsoft websites recommend i use 'filemon' to find the problem - but i don't know how to make the error happen.. and runing filemon indefinetly to find an error is a bad idea.
14:17
<Hyperbyte>
:(
14:17
<andygraybeal>
it's frustrating
14:18
it's a proprietary app.. no documentation and no support
14:18
i want to strangle myself
14:36
<Hyperbyte>
That doesn't sound like a good plan for a saturday either.
15:01
<andygraybeal>
:)
15:02
i guess i'm being dramatic.. i've been trying to convince the guys at floreantpos or openbravo to modify their systems to work for our restaurant; so far no go.. i'll keep buggin them
15:03
openbravopos has a fork named openpos now.. i haven't tried that; i've heard it is stil buggy.
15:03
most pos solutions are for retail and not restaurant; it's a whole different ballgame
15:03
i'd love to get the erp and pos in one
15:09
cause really using an open source system is the only way to really 'fix' my problems i'm having.
