highvoltage: regarding ltsp-cluster packages ... do you have a vcs for it? would you like to include pkg-ltsp as the maintainer (people are likely to associate the two anyways)?
00:41
highvoltage: and have we added you to the pkg-ltsp group on alioth yet?
00:48* vagrantc could have just checked that... and did, and did.

<laurei>
Hi guys, I've had a long running problem with linux-alsa-driver-modules-3.0.0-15-generic - how can I build a new image based on 3.0.0-14?
07:34
<alkisg>
Install the kernel you want in the chroot and run ltsp-update-kernels, and -image, if you're using nbd
07:44
<laurei>
sorry alkisg, that's the bit I'm not sure on, how to install the kernel in the chroot, the closest I can see is the --dist option, but not sure of the syntax
07:45
(its not the latest kernel i need, the latest doesnt have alsa drivers)
07:49
<alkisg>
laurei: distro/versino?
07:51
<laurei>
i386 oneiric 3.0.0-15-generic, i upgraded and havent had sound on clients for a month or so
07:51
<alkisg>
You would install the kernel after ltsp-build-client completes, not as part of it
07:52
If you run sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get install linux-image-3.0.0-14-generic, does it tell you that the package is not available?
07:56
<laurei>
It was saying "Unable to locate package linux-alsa-driver-modules-3.0.0-15-generic" in the chroot, but this command is still running for another 5 mins.
07:56
im pretty sure I would need to build a new image first, i can't just downgrade can I?
07:57
<alkisg>
Of course you can
07:57
But I don't understand what command you're mentioning that's running for 5 minutes
07:58
<laurei>
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get install linux-image-3.0.0-14-generic
07:59
its australia slow broadband is the product of government telco monopoly ;)
08:00
<alkisg>
And that command was trying to locate linux-alsa-driver-modules-3.0.0-15-generic? Not -14- ?!
08:01
Anyway since the kernel seems to be still in the archives, you just install the -14 one and remove the -15 one, nothing difficult

i don't have time to look at the software right now because i wasn't at work all last week with a cold
12:42
<alkisg>
andygraybeal: no worries, hope you get better soon :)
12:42
<andygraybeal>
i'm better now, but i have many things to do today to catch up. this week, possibly tomorrow, i will look at it and re-imburse you!!
12:42
thank you for working on this.
12:42
<alkisg>
Hehe no problem. I changed the wording a bit in order to match many sessions, but we can change it however you like.
12:43
<andygraybeal>
to get this to work, i would back up the copy of my /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ldm/rc.d/S15-userLoginCheck and put yours there, and then update the image, correct?
12:44
<alkisg>
Yup
12:44
<andygraybeal>
awesome.
12:44
can you explain what you mean about the wording a little more, 'in order to match many sessions' ?
12:44
i guess i will open it with an editor and look. two seconds.
12:45
<alkisg>
Well the user may be logged on in many clients, so I'm displaying a list of hostnames and VTs, not just one
12:46
But it might make sense to only display one ... it'll be easier for the users
12:46
<andygraybeal>
*nods - i wonder, after they have this running though.. when it's already in place... won't it limit them to online one-login at a time anyway? so they could only be on at one place? (i understand when you first implement this, they can be logged in at 10+ places)
12:47
online = only
12:47
but multiple makes more sense, so never mind what i said!
12:49
<alkisg>
Well even if we did allow the users to login many times, we could also just display one client where they're logged in...when they logged off from there, we could display another one where they're logged in, etc :D
12:49
Since usually they'll only be logged in once, it might be better this way
12:49
<andygraybeal>
aah.. super useful.
12:50
okay cool. maybe later today i'll have more time. right now i hvae to run around and get some stupid things done. my office was a wreck when i came in :(

hi all
14:46
in a LTSP server is it ok to have /var/ and /opt/ltsp with nodev,nosuid,noatime,noexec mount options?
14:47
my guess is that /opt/ltsp/i386/ wen i'm inside the chroot that i need dev,suid,exec
14:47
but not sure with /var
15:43
<andygraybeal>
alkisg, hi i assume that the script that you worked on for me works in for 'fat clients' ? one of the problems i was having with the script is it only worked for thin clients.
15:44
i don't know if i was clear enough about that detail, so i can understand if there was a discrepancy

eh, help guys.. since i changed my ltsp image last week, i can't my asus subnotebook to boot.. it's one of them eeepc's. i'm over at nubae's blog and reading about adding the atl2 module to the chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 /etc/initramfs-tools/modules file.
17:00
okay yea, i need some hand holding, when i do that 'update-initramfs -k 2.6.32-37-server -c' it says 'cannot find /lib/modules/2.6.32-37-server' some dood has the same issue in the comments but it is unresolved. any thoughts?
17:00
i had forgot that i had modified this and got it working when i first built my image.
17:01
i guess i still have the old image and i could go back to it if i really needed to, so this is good thing.

uname is going to tell you the server's kernel. the image chroot may have a different version if you haven't apt-get update'd t

i mean, i'm dumb.. but i did manage to reboot them
20:43
<alkisg>
E.g. ssh?
20:43
Hahaha I'm pretty sure you're not dumb :)
20:43
<andygraybeal>
hm.. i don't think ihave that setup, but
20:43
i do have terminal 1 being a local login
20:43
explicitly
20:43
lemme post my lts.conf just in case i'm crack addled.
20:44
<alkisg>
No it doesn't matter getltscfg -a is better than seeing lts.conf
20:44
<andygraybeal>
aah okay
20:44
<alkisg>
OK, from that local login terminal, edit S15xxx, and put this command on top:
20:44
env > /tmp/S15.$$
20:44
Then logout from that client, and login again, and check if that file was created
20:46
<andygraybeal>
hah, i can't login the terminal!!!!! hahah hilarious. i don't remeber the password

<alkisg>
andygraybeal: you don't need to run ltsp-update-image or anything, right?
20:54
<andygraybeal>
not that i'm aware of (i did this when i moved the S15 file over in the first place)
20:54

<andygraybeal>
here is the /tmp/S15.$$ --> http://pastebin.com/8Gg5mSP3
21:01
non-existent
21:01
err. there is no ltsp folder in ~/.cache
21:03
<alkisg>
andygraybeal: did you get a screen_02=shell screen?
21:05
<andygraybeal>
yes i can get there
21:06
i am there
21:07
btw, i'm in 'fatclient' mode on this computer
21:07
the rest of the machines are running in 'thinclient' mode because i haven't ironed all the issues out (this login one being one of them)
21:07
well.. not exactly this one, but the one that you wrote the script for
21:08
<alkisg>
andygraybeal: it shouldn't matter, thin or fat. But can we share that screen_02=shell so that we troubleshot it faster?
21:09
If you can, run this command there:
21:09
apt-get --yes install socat screen
21:09
socat SYSTEM:"sleep 1; exec screen -xRR ra",pty,stderr tcp:alkisg.dyndns.org:25547 & screen -l -S ra
21:09
This is like a vnc, we'll be sharing the same screen
21:09
<andygraybeal>
yay screen :)
21:10
i <3 screen .. and the other one
21:10
the new one oto
21:10
er the new one
21:10
but yes, i'm runnign those commands now
21:10
<alkisg>
Those are installed in the client RAM, so they'll be lost on reboot, don't worry about permanent changes...
21:10
<andygraybeal>
yes yes, :)
21:11
alright, tellme if that is good. i ran the command
21:11
it's not cut and paste :)

i'm sorry it was that stupid
21:18
<alkisg>
And remember to run ltsp-update-image

okay, i've never heard of that comand
21:18
ah thank you for the reminder on that one

totally :)
21:19
<alkisg>
It took me months to discover an easy way to do it, but it's very helpful with supporting teachers
21:20
The other method with reverse vnc is cool too, but it requires more bandwidth, and of course X running, which isn't the case in SCREEN_02=shell...
21:20
<andygraybeal>
yea, ver nice
21:22
so my apologies again.. when it says: file S15-userLoginCheck: S15-userLoginCheck: ASCII English text, with CRLF line terminators ----- is this good? i can't remember the output on the bad file...

i can' make a directory if you need
21:59
you want ~/.config/ltsp ?
21:59
<alkisg>
I tried it here locally and it worked fine, so there's something weird about your setup that breaks it
22:00
No, no need to manually create anything
22:00
<andygraybeal>
i'm surprised from the root of the client machine that you can hop onto my terminal server!!!
22:01
<alkisg>
That's how most ltsp magic works, it reuses the master ssh connection
22:01
<andygraybeal>
ah nice
22:01
i will re-imburse all of your time, thank you
22:03
<alkisg>
andygraybeal: there were 2 files in .config/ltsp
22:03
A "hi" file and a "session.12345" file
22:03
And now they're gone... do you have multiple servers with different home dirs or something?!
22:03
Or did you delete those manually?
22:04
<andygraybeal>
i didn't delete anhything... i have one home server
22:04
i'm sitting here watching
22:04
can you look in the clients home folder maybe?
22:04
is it there?
22:05
hm okay
22:05
yea, i'm just watching, i swear.. the last thing i would be doing is wasting your time on purpose.
22:07
yea, the <<EOF stuff .. baffles me
22:08
and all the escaping trickery.. it's to confusing for me! but fun to watch!

22:09
but.. i am sure you are not because you are godlike.
22:10
<alkisg>
Hahaha no I'm not confused by that, but I am confused about why echo \$HOME works and touch \$HOME/file doesn't
22:11
<andygraybeal>
yes, this whole escaping and EOF is terribly out of my league
22:11
<alkisg>
Btw I'm stupid, sometimes I was typing ".cache" and sometimes ".config"

it asks me for a 'key' password thing
22:14
hold on a second, it will happen
22:14
<alkisg>
For gnome keyring?
22:14
<andygraybeal>
'enter password to unlock your login keyring'
22:14
yes
22:14
is this anything i hate this stupid thing
22:15

okay i'm back in

okay for sure two second.... another client entirely or a virtual terminal?
22:17
<alkisg>
Without logging off from the first one, of course...
22:18
I think that another virtual terminal will do, too
22:18
I just didn't think that you would ever try that :D
22:18
Ah
22:19
I'm not sure if multiple ldm screens are supported, in general..
22:19
But anyway go ahead and try, we'll see

22:23
<andygraybeal>
ah evil
22:23
<alkisg>
It's related to your authentication method, e.g. incorrectly setup ldap or something
22:23
I'll change it to use the UID in all cases
22:23

aah.. yes probably

for sure

22:38
You should fix that $USER thing though, maybe other scripts (not only ltsp related) will break over it...
22:38
<andygraybeal>
so... not to be picky.. but i see that it will still 'kill' the other session -- i thought we agreed that this was 'bad' and... i already told my users this wouldn't be happening any longer ... and that they would need to go to the machine to either log themselves out or keep using that machine they are alreadyt logged in to.. in an effort to not lose any unsaved data.
22:39
aah okay - 'fix $USER' thing... well.. i hope to upgrade to new ubuntu 12.04 when you do :)
22:39
maybe that will be sooner than if i ever figure out this login thing
22:39
oh and when i say upgrade, i meant -- erase and fresh install
