<vagrantc>
that would have definitely been worth a bug report... ternarybit
02:16
people should just go ahead and file bug reports... worst case is they get closed or redirected to somewhere else
02:16
worst case about asking in irc is we never actually get the bugfix or feature request
02:16
we can't comment on what we can't see

is there a preferred/suggested way to test changes between chroots? e.g. if I want to make some changes, test them, on a few machines, then roll it out to all machines with the option to switch back in case of a problem

17:06
oh maybe not, spoke too soon
17:11
it's possible to specify the chroot though, I forget how

ternarybit, I'd just backup the /opt/ltsp/ directory

<ternarybit>
Hyperbite: I was thinking about 2 chroots. my testing clients have dhcp reservations pointing to the testing chroot.
17:27
but when I finally want to push the update to everyone, I will need to somehow iterate the chroot so the testing becomes production, and the old production stays as the last known working
17:27
what is the best way to clone a chroot? just cp?
17:33
<Hyperbyte>
cp -a
17:33
-a perserves permissions.

ternarybit: if you're using nbd, then ltsp-update-image keeps a backup at /opt/ltsp/images/i386.img.old that you can revert using ltsp-update-image --revert
17:47
<ternarybit>
alkisg: Hmmm. maybe I could back up the img.old so it won't cycle through as I'm iterating through updates...I like this idea. basically just a compressed backup
17:47
<alkisg>
Yup and takes 1 second to revert
17:49
<ternarybit>
right, but then only the nbd is reverted, the actual chroot still has all the possibly unwanted changes...
17:49
<alkisg>
Yes but you can run unsquashfs if you want
17:51
<ternarybit>
true
17:51
I still like the idea

Is there an easy way to switch between NFS and NBD, so I can iterate through testing without needing to rebuild images every time, but then enable NBD for general use?
19:06
<championofcyrodi>
ternarybit: nbd vs. nfs comes down to supporting nbd/nfs as a root block device on boot. i know ubuntu supports NBD in the kernel for the root filesystem, but not sure about NFS. probably does. likely you'll have to modify how the initramfs scripts mount your filesystem. might be in an ltsp config somewhere.
19:07
but you should be able to build both an NFS root filesystem and an NBD... then switch back and forth w/o needing to build over and over.
19:08
<ternarybit>
found a script here, trying in a sec: usage(){
19:08
echo "usage: $0 [ nbd | nfs ]"
19:08
}
19:08
if [ $# -ne 1 ]; then
19:08
echo " Error: this application takes exactly one parameter"
19:08
usage
19:08
exit 1
19:08
elif [ "$1" != "nbd" ] && [ "$1" != "nfs" ]; then
19:08
usage
19:08
exit 1
19:08
crap sorry

ternarybit: that wiki page is horribly outdated, do delete at least the nfs/nbd section (I haven't read the rest of the page)
20:06
Changing between nfs and nbd in ubuntu is as easy as editing pxelinux.cfg/default
20:07* vagrantc forgets in which versions those improvements hit
20:08
<ternarybit>
alkisk: thank you
20:11
well, I gave it a solid shot...but I just can't figure out how to get USB audio working.
20:12
so far I edited alsa-base.conf to give the USB sound device the default card. then running aplay /usr/share/sounds/audio/Front_Center.wav plays through USB headphones
20:12
but for the life of me I can't get either Chrome or Firefox to use USB audio
20:13
built-in HDA Intel works fine
20:13
Tried flash and html5, no dice
20:13
<alkisg>
Does it work without ltsp?
20:13
<ternarybit>
the headphones work in windows...
20:13
detected in aplay -l and cat /proc/asound/cards
20:14
<alkisg>
If it works without ltsp, and it doesn't work with ltsp, then it's an ltsp issue
20:14
<ternarybit>
i wouldn't even bother, but the client has a huge investsment in these headphones so i'd like them to work if at all possible
20:14
<alkisg>
If not, you should be asking in another irc channel, e.g. in #ubuntu or in #linux etc etc
20:15
So first thing to try would be to boot the client without ltsp
20:15
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: you should definitely file your patches for chrome browser as a kiosk script
20:16
ternarybit: feature request bug, at least
20:16
<alkisg>

ltsp-bug: To file a bug report for upstream LTSP, go to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp
20:16
<vagrantc>
aha!
20:16
<ternarybit>
if I had to guess, the problem is most likely not specific to ltsp, i.e., I seriously doubt an ltsp binary is causing the problem. however, fixing it may take a more ltsp-centric approach, vs. a more generic ubuntu/linux approach, which is why I asked
20:17
<alkisg>
ternarybit: if it's a kernel/alsa issue, you're wasting your time asking here
20:17
Try without ltsp first
20:17
<vagrantc>
a live image should work
20:18
<ternarybit>
vagrantc: I will do my best to submit a feaeture request
20:18
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: it sounds like something that could be useful to others
20:19
ternarybit: can't promise we'd get to it immediately, but we can't get to it at all if you don't file it :)
20:20
<ternarybit>
vagrantc: it would be the first patch/request I have ever filed, so it may take a bit or not be 100% kosher, but i'll do my best
20:20
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: don't let perfection stall you out :)
