Hi guys. I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 Alternate as a LTSP Server. The install was very easy and we have a working lab of thinclients. But with regular machines like laptops that will not use ltsp, the DHCP is offering corrects IPs but they are not acessing Internet. Any clue?

how far did you get/
Silveira_Neto, it's not set up as a router. it doesn't forward/share the network between the NICs
Today could be problematic. My cellphone, though plugged in all night, didn't charge. So it's completely dead.
if you run wireshark on the server as it boots you will prob see the dhcp piece..i will pastebot the dhcpd.conf that works..but exactly why i am not sure..
i havnt commented out to see what needs to be global and what should be in the specific stanza for the particular client
scottmaccal, for me the initrd loads to packet 12289 and then barfs
"cliebow" pasted "for scott" (56 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/5

So, after a marathon session last night.... I've got the beginnings of a sabayon docbook manual.
I have to re-screencap all the windows, since they've changed.
but... I'm well on the way to getting Sabayon documented.
it's not documented? I was planing on reading docs and learn soon
sbalneav, you sir, are a pimp
we bow before your greatness.
Appiah: Well there's some documentation out there.
It was written back when the app was at Version 0.18
We're now on 2.29
|09:18||Brian_H has joined #ltsp|
well I'll test and throw feedback at you
and do what I can to contrib
Once I get the docs integrated into the help system, I'll probably cut a fresh package for my ppa
|09:23||dro has joined #ltsp|
sbalneav, how does sabayon handle network setups?
So, I've got a machine here. User upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic. Machine boots fine to login box. No one can log in.
Not even at the console login
no, standalone machine. Home user.
So, boot into recovery protocol
apt-* seems to work, EVERYthing seems to work, except pam
want me to take a peek at the pam files for reference?
doing any pam operation results in a segfault
so, run a passwd , get a segfault
how about getent passwd ?
ltrace reveals it's dying in pam_start
haven't tried that yet.
that should be nsswitch
So, I'm wondering if I've got a bad package somewhere.
is there a way in apt to reinstall EVERYTHING?
I know you can do apt-get --reinstall install <foo>
but there's a lot of <foo>
I just want to say, "look, sit off in a corner for an hour or to, and re-install every package"
want a script to do it?
like ap-get --reinstall upgrade
dpkg -l | cut -f 3 -d ' ' should get you a package list.
that's what I was thinking
just wondered if there was a more elegant way :)
feed that into a script that reads stdin and does apt-get --reinstall install <foo>
bah, this is LTSP, we don't do things elegantly.
Well, we TRY
ok, that's what I suspected.
that's a problem where I don't think there is an elegant solution.
Message received and understood.
the ugly may be hidden from you... but I suspect it's still there.

Hi i have a weird problem, one of the users full the hd with ~/dev/fd/3/fd/3/fd/3... directories , the users are totally newbies, i think it is related with localapps or some.. or with playing sound... actually i dont know
|09:33||CAN-o-SPAM has joined #ltsp|
inside the dirs there's files like pts, snd, dri, shm, net, char, .initramfs, etc...
the user havent any special permission
that sounds like dev is being copied to theat directory
|09:38||Brian_H has quit IRC|
Wasn't there some bug that stgraber fixed relating to spaces in the username?
that resulted in filled hard drives?
is the first time it happen and is the only user that have that dir dev in their home
|09:38||Brian_H has joined #ltsp|
i use ubuntu 9.04
sbalneav, in which situation it happen? so i can prevent it
that'll work for the connection but will copy all of the thin client root in the user's home directory
(starting by bin, dev and etc)
dev containing a few symlink loops, it can take an infinite amount of disk space
|09:42||dro has quit IRC|
stgraber: yeah, thought so. Did you fix this in your ppa?
you say that if i write my username like that, i will login successfully but it will copy the root dir?
ill try :P
maybe coordinador just needs to update using your packages.
they are safe to use it or not yet?
that's what I deploy in production, it's basically karmic's ltsp but on jaunty
oh god is true, i have bin and boot dirs too, didnt copy the rest because the system cannot copy beyond dev
I always maintain a backport for the current stable release so I can have more testers
now that Karmic is released, I'll backport lucid to karmic
and my packages for jaunty won't change other than critical bug fixes
is that a bug in ldm?
oh my god the hd is filling up
ok , confirmed :)

hello, can someone please help me solve my problem with Ubuntu and LTSP?
if you ask it..
if I want to connect, I can see the login screen
but then if I enter the password, it shows "Veryfiing password, please wait"
and then "No response from server, restarting"
did you change your ip ?
I looked at forum and tried updating ssh keys, but that does not work
no, did not change it
is sshd running?
but it looks very similar to that problem
I can log in through ctrl+alt+f1
that's not logging in remotely tho.. only locally
can you ssh as a user acount?
maybe I should also note, that i try it on virtual machines and that it already worked before some time
ok, i will try it
oh, looks interesting, ssh does not work
ok, I figured out that I have to use my server username, so it works
you have to use accounts created on your server yes
however, is it correct that i access the whole filesystem and not only the /opt/ltsp/i386 part?
after login yes..
/opt/ltsp/i386/ is what gets loaded to the thin client so you can get the stuff needed to bootstrap yourself into the server
oh, thanks, I had a kind of mess in this
|15:11||hersonls has quit IRC|
btw, I have read in some LTSP documentation, that the min. req. for the client is about 24MB RAM. Do you by a chance know if it is possible to get some cheap thin client with small memory and some acceptable processor? Everything I could find had at least 256MB, while some of them did not have for example mathematical coprocessor, so it had to be emulated by the OS etc.
|15:20||pmatulis has quit IRC|
i wouldn't recommend a thin client with less that 128MB of ram these days, unfortunately.
so the doc was obsolete?
when was it ever 24mb ram?
k21, read the
johnny: "docs" is For the most current documentation, see http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LtspDocumentationUpstream
those are the real docs
it *might* be *possible*, but it probably won't work for most needs. it might not even be possible, though.
i think ltsp 4.2 worked with 16-24MB of ram.
but those were simpler days.
people didn't expect as much.
yes, it is possible that I looked at a doc for a wrong version
here is where I read it: http://www.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LTSPTerminal
it really surprised me, when I read it :)
|15:35||bieb has left #ltsp|
the ltsp.org wiki has so much outdated information, and a few kernels of useful information. i have long advocated to rename it to something else indicating that... like oldwiki.ltsp.org or some such.
however, I looked at disklessworkstations.com (one of the links in ubuntu wiki) and found cheapest TC: 1GHz proc, 256MB RAM for 285 USD
then I searched through some local internet shops and found this (not really TC): 1.6GHz proc, 2GB RAM, 160GB harddrive for approx. 306 USD
why are the TCs so expensive? or can I get them cheaper somewhere?
they're produced in smaller quantities, and have no moving parts, typically, which makes them break less.
whereas even a cheap desktop system will likely not work without a fan... and once the fan goes, you have to replace the whole thing.
well, don't have to, but in some ways that's the easiest way
they also typical consume far less electricity
and take up less physical space
i will post link to the second PC I found - it dous not look like having a fan and they also write there, that it has very low power consumption, it is no real TC only because of the HDD
it is strange but even after googling for its name, i found only czech sites:
and if I sold the HDD for, lets say, 40 usd, it would be even cheaper than the TC from disklessworkstations.com (considered that it will be possible to take the HDD out)

You re-worked your ip addresses this morning with alkisg
did you ltsp-update-sshkeys && ltsp-update-image?
Yes, that is correct :)
No, should I do that?

No, just the thin client

Are there any times I should issue those commands, or is that just a "one-shot" deal?
Any time you fiddle with your ip address on the server, you should update the sshkeys

have a look at the docs.
Will do - thanks very much :)
