<lifeboy>
morning all (in my timezone!)
09:34
I have gnome-session-fallback installed and under update-alternatives to set it as the default. Also set it in the my lts.conf as LDM_SESSION. However, my debian client doesn't show the different sessions in the GUI list for selection and I get thrown back to the logon right after login in.

Also, despite ldm-themes I get the standard debian logon instead of the ldm-theme. What is causing this?

I guess alkisg and vagrantc are the two that can answer this, right?
10:41
Ah, thanks highvoltage! I found http://jonathancarter.org/2011/03/19/spacefun-for-ltsp-on-debian/
10:43
<highvoltage>
:D
10:44
that's still for squeeze though

highvoltage: but at least it gave me the info of where to look to start understanding my problem!
11:07
:-) Despite putting LDM_THEME=ltsp in lts.conf, I always get the joy theme.
11:07
Argh! I meant :-(

I think something is missing in my whole wheezy chroot ... It boots up, but I can't login with ldm, themes are not loading... :-(

<alkisg>
lifeboy: do you have ldm-server installed in your server?
11:19
<lifeboy>
alkisg: ii ldm-server 2:2.2.11-2+r1482+p949~precise1
11:20
<alkisg>
lifeboy: I only have a little time, can I have a look at your server via VNC?
11:20
If yes, x11vnc -connect plinet.ioa.sch.gr
11:21
<lifeboy>
Yes, you could. I don't remember the commands though? Or ssh in?
11:21
<alkisg>
See the command above
11:21
<lifeboy>
ah, :-)
11:24
Alkisg: I uninstalled ltsp-server, added the Greek PPA and reinstalled it. Then copied the wheezy chroot and did the rest.
11:24
I suppose I could have added the PPA and upgraded as well?
11:25
<alkisg>
I don't see the server though
11:25
I only see a black screen
11:25
Is that from a thin client?
11:25
If so, you need to add -noshm...
11:26
<lifeboy>
No, it's from the server
11:26
<alkisg>
Are you physically there? Or via vnc, x2go, ...?
11:27
<lifeboy>
no, via ssh
11:27
I can do it from the console...
11:35
<alkisg>
lifeboy: I'm installing epoptes-client because it's then much easier to get remote access to the client itself
11:36
<lifeboy>
ok, good. I actually had that at one stage...

lifeboy: so the problems were:
11:49
lts.conf wasn't readable by the tftp server,
11:49
wrong lts.conf settings,
11:49
wrong ssh key in the chroot (that one still remains),
11:50
wrong keyboard configuration in the chroot,
11:50
and wrong password (maybe due to keyboard layout) for the test user
11:50mgariepy has left IRC (mgariepy!mgariepy@ubuntu/member/mgariepy, Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
11:50
<lifeboy>
the keyboard config crept back somehow...
11:50
yes, I was testing with "roland" who was logged in already
11:51
The lts.conf is almost identical to the one I use at the headoffice site with the same hardware, except that they boot 10.04 clients
11:51
<alkisg>
It wasn't readable, it needed chmod +r
11:52
<lifeboy>
That was clearly the main cause of the problem
11:52
right?
11:52
<alkisg>
And the ssh keys etc
11:52
OK now you're ready to go :)
11:52brunolambert has left IRC (brunolambert!brunolambe@nat/revolutionlinux/x-oiukjrnqzmlldbfr, Ping timeout: 245 seconds)

I thought the ssh keys don't matter. I get prompt to accept the new key when I log in on the headoffice server.
11:53
There's some setting to prompt the user, not?
11:53
<alkisg>
No
11:53* alkisg closed VNC
11:54
<lifeboy>
I'll just compare them again. Thanks a great stack! Much appreciated!

alkisg: Depending on the user, the session is sometimes Unity and sometimes gnome-fallback. The options are not in the session list of the client?
13:00
I'd really like the client to have the option or at least the default to be "gnome-fallback"
13:00
That should all come from lts.conf, right?

alkisg: I'm not quite sure what you mean. Should I run nc on the thin client that does not show in epoptes and this will make it show? The thin client that doesn't show is a physical device at the remove site. The virtual machine thin client does show.
14:48
s/remove site/remote site/
14:51
<alkisg>
lifeboy: if it's a remote site, you might have firewall/port forwarding issues
14:52
Login on the client. Run ltsp-localapps xterm. And from that xterm run the nc command.
14:52
If you can't see the server's 9571 port, then it's a firewall etc issue
14:53
<lifeboy>
It's the server you were on earlier. It shows the vm thin clients, but not the physical thin clients. There's no-one at that office now, so I can't get someone to enter something on the clients for me anymore until tomorrow morning
14:54
and I'm running the epoptes gui on the server console (via remote kvm)
14:55
I'll take it up again in the morning
14:57
One thing I know is that there's no firewall between the thin clients and the server.
14:57
<alkisg>
If the thin clients weren't rebooted after epoptes was installed, they wouldn't show up in its UI
14:58
If a user is logged in on a thin client, you can see his screen (requires root)

linux.c32 -dhcpinfo generates an <initramfs>/dhcpinfo.dat file, which our udhcpc script can use instead of IPAPPEND 3...

alkisg: wow
16:33
<alkisg>
It would be nice if code for that landed in initramfs-tools

16:35willianmazzardo has joined IRC (willianmazzardo!~textual@187.4.15.116)
16:35
<alkisg>
That would be done from the "real" system, not from the initramfs, where the above ip would be used as "static"...
16:35
<vagrantc>
except renewing the lease runs the risk of changing ip address and breaking rootfs
16:36
<alkisg>
One can try to reniew and not respect any changes :)
16:36
*renew
16:36
<vagrantc>
what's the point, then?
16:36
<alkisg>
Usually the dhcp servers will acknoledge the renewal, so the lease won't ever expire
16:37
Without renewal, it will eventually expire, so it depends on the server pinging before assigning an ip
16:37
With renewal, there's no need to ping
16:38
The case where the dhcp server refuses to renew our lease is the exception (which we'll have to ignore client side), not the rule...
