ltspuser_68: There is a good chance it's untested.
01:24
ltspuser_68: if it's not to tied to altiris, and can pxe boot though, it seems like it will work fine.

Morning Gang - updating the chroot in 12.04.1 failed to provide kernels in /opt/ltsp/i386/boot/ - however when I build a new client, kernels are there. My sequence for updating the chroot is the same I used for ltsp 10.04 - sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 , mount -t proc proc /proc , apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade, exit, sudo ltsp-update-kernels, sudo umount /opt/ltsp/i386/proc , sudo...
14:53
...ltsp-update-image - any ideas?

hey guys!
14:53
got a question for you
14:53
<thebwt>
does /etc/init.d get used in (thick) ltsp? Trying to start a service as a ldap user and I am not sure where this is breaking down at.
14:54
<roasted>
I'm not physically in front of this server but I'm hearing about an old server I put in a year or two ago that was recently 10.04-12.04 upgraded. It's on Windows AD. The users on the clients themselves sometimes have issues logging off, where selecting log off does nothing.
14:54
Is this a common thing? Perhaps gnome classic issue?

working great for us, main issue is that it asks you if you want a default desktop or a blank one, and certain users just x the box and end up without a desktop

easy enough to fix after the fact, but a bit annoying

also any lock screen buttons don't work, going to try and see if we can hook the screen locking up to our ldap system.

Have upgraded to 12.04LTS and LTSP. There was a hinkey workaround for getting chromium-browser to work as a localapp by editing /usr/share/applications/chromium-browser.desktop every freaking time chrome was updated. Those fixes do not seem to work with unity. The symptom is that Chrome (on the thin client) simply dies without so much as log entry or complaint..
16:57
<Hyperbyte>
blakes, run a local xterm, then launch chromium from there. You will see console error messages.
16:58
<blakes>
When I execute 'ltsp-localapps chromium-browser' from the terminal it works. Checked /usr/share/applications/chromium-browser.desktop which has appropriately: Exec=ltsp-localapps chromium-browser

17:04
<Mip5>
the contents of /opt/ltsp/i386/boot : pexelinux.0, memtest86+, memtest86+_multiboot.bin, pxelinux.0, and pxelinux.cfg
17:05
<vagrantc>
Mip5: an upgrade, or a fresh install?
17:07
<Mip5>
An upgrade resulted in that. The initial build was good, and then I ran the update steps that used to work in 10.04 , and the kernels disappeared.

LDM_SESSION="gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d"
17:24
<vagrantc>
what were your "update steps that used to work in 10.04" ?
17:24
were you upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04?
17:26
<Mip5>
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 , mount -t proc proc /proc , apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade , exit, sudo ltsp-update-kernels, sudo umount /opt/ltsp/i386/proc, sudo ltsp-update-image
17:27
No - this was a fresh install of 12.04 on new hardware. The initial thin client build seemed to work, but the updates broke it. It has happened a few times.
17:28
<vagrantc>
Mip5: ltsp-chroot dpkg -l linux'*'
17:29
<Mip5>
Can you clarify? When shoudl I do this - what will happen?
17:29
<vagrantc>
Mip5: that should display the installed kernel packages
17:29
Mip5: ltsp-chroot dpkg -l linux'*' | egrep ^ii
17:30
Mip5: and if this has happened a few times, how did you get back to a working state?
17:31
<Mip5>
I built a new client - sad to say, but I wasn't able to find the solution otherwise.
17:31
<vagrantc>
Mip5: i'm curious at which phase it happens ... after the apt-get dist-upgrade, after ltsp-update-kernels, or after ltsp-update-image
17:31
we did re-write some of the ltsp-update-kernels code after the 12.04 release, as i was having weird issues with it in Debian
17:35
<Mip5>
great question - I'm building a new client now, as they planned to use the lab today, and I wasn't sure I would be able to solve it otherwise.
17:36
Now the contents of /opt/ltsp/i386/boot include vmlinux-3.2.0-30-generic, nbi.img, initrd.img, etc
17:40
<blakes>
So I gave up on Unity and force thin clients to use the gnome-classic session. Followed the instructions here: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/edubuntu-users/2011-April/006691.html
17:41
This may be useful for Mip5 setting the default session too.
18:04
<alkisg>
!gnome-classic | echo blakes:
18:04
<ltsp>
blakes: gnome-classic: To select gnome-classic as your default session, install the gnome-session-fallback package, and put this line in your lts.conf: LDM_SESSION="gnome-session --session=gnome-classic"
18:04
<Mip5>
vagrantic: I've gotta go to a meeting, but will be back, and would love to help troubleshoot this more, if you have time. The newly created image I just made works.
18:05
<alkisg>
blakes: you don't need the complexity of the link you just pasted, it's much more easy than that
18:06

vagrantc: here's the content of that boot directory: gpxelinux.0 memtest86+.bin memtest86+_multiboot.bin pxelinux.0 pxelinux.cfg
20:17
nothing else is there

<vagrantc>
Mip5: so i want to see the results of the dpkg -l linux'*' after you trigger the bug you've been having where the stuff gets removed from the boot dir.
20:27
<Mip5>
vagrantc: okay - would you mind walking me through the process? I'll have to make a new boot dir in a new client image, and then update *that*, as the lab is in use for the rest of the day, or can I run the ltsp-chroot command and point it at the broken, but recently moved client image?
20:30
<vagrantc>
Mip5: don't really have much time to look at it... but basically, take each step of your previously outlined upgrade process, and see at which point it breaks.
20:30
then we'll have a better idea of what's breaking it
20:31
like alkisg said earlier, it's probably something removing it during the apt-get dist-upgrade process
20:36
<Mip5>
vagrantc: okay, can I do this for a new client boot image? WOuld I specify it in /opt/i386-New, or something like that?
20:44
I'll revisit the man pages and see what I can find. I seem to recall being able to have more than client boot image on the server. Have a great weekend.

alkisg: in order to troubleshoot the upgrade process that resulted in removing kernel images, vagrantc recommended I try the upgrade again, and check for the presence of the kernels after each step.
21:11
<alkisg>
Mip5: you can also enable "unlimited scrollback" in gnome-terminal, and then paste all output to pastebin
21:11
<Mip5>
alkisg: can I build a new client using a different base, or something, so that I can mess around with it without damaging the one I need for my school?
21:12
<alkisg>
Mip5: sudo mv /opt/ltsp /opt/ltsp-bak
21:12
Then build, and in the end put it back

21:13
<Mip5>
It's a fresh install of 12.04, though I have a 10.04 -> 12.04 upgrade that I'm about to kick off on an older server.
21:13
<alkisg>
Mip5: http://pastebin.com/u0EndR08 does have a kernel though, is that before the bug is triggered?
21:14
And http://pastebin.com/XD66QBm8 has linux-image as well
21:14
<Mip5>
No - that's the result of the newly created client image
21:14
<alkisg>
So, that image does have a kernel; where is the problem?
21:16
<Mip5>
Sorry for being unclear. After an update, my clients wouldn't boot, and were prompted for a kernel image. I looked in /opt/ltsp/i386/boot, and found no images, only this: gpxelinux.0 memtest86+.bin memtest86+_multiboot.bin pxelinux.0 pxelinux.cfg
21:17
<alkisg>
And then you build a new chroot, which doesn't have the problem, so you're unable to reproduce the bug?
21:18
<Mip5>
Right - I can only reproduce the bug by running the update sequence I outlined above, but I didn't want to do it on the live image, since the school needs it.. I'm happy to do it again - it seems to fail pretty consistently.
21:19
<alkisg>
Mip5: sudo rsync -a /opt/ltsp /opt/ltsp-good-backup-for-school
21:19
And then do your update steps for /opt/ltsp
21:20
<Mip5>
okay - and then reverse the source and destination to restore?
21:20
<alkisg>
Right, but only after we pinpoint the problem
21:20
<Mip5>
got it - thanks
21:20
<alkisg>
So, after that, you'd do: sudo rm /opt/ltsp; sudo mv /opt/ltsp-good-backup-for-school /opt/ltsp
21:21
<Mip5>
ah, okay - thanks again

alkisg: the rsync job just completed. Here's the steps I plan to execute (and which I used to in 10.04):
21:35
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 , mount -t proc proc /proc , apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade , exit, sudo ltsp-update-kernels, sudo umount /opt/ltsp/i386/proc, sudo ltsp-update-image
21:36
Should I just check the /opt/ltsp/i386/boot after each step to see which step causes the disappearance of kernels?
21:36
<alkisg>
Yup
21:36
Also keep ALL the output
21:36
E.g. it might tell you "remove linux-image? [y/]" :)

21:48
alkisg: I'll try it again the same way once there are some more updates. IIRC, it's only become broken when there were packages to be updated. Thanks again for all of your help.
