Hi, we tried today to install ltsp19 alongside the previous installation in chrootless way, and now it throws error when booting up thinclient: Could not configure PAM foor SSH authentication!
12:50
LTSP command failed: /usr/share/ltsp/client/login/pamltsp install
12:50
aborting ltsp
12:50
we had nfs mount issues but got it resolved

I guess it is because of ldap authentication?

pavars, are you using ldap?
13:38
<pavars>
yes
13:39
I just removed this file /etc/ltsp/client/init/55-pam.sh
13:39
and managed to move
13:39
<alkisg_android>
see the ltsp issues on github for a how to
13:39
<pavars>
sorry, mixing up thing
13:39
<alkisg_android>
ah ok
13:39
<pavars>
managed to boot forward
13:39
is pamltsp needed ? or what manual changes do I need to make since I've disabled it

<kvaps>
Hi there!
14:30
<uumas>
Hi!
14:31
<kvaps>
I'm using LTSP for pxe-booting a lot servers, and managing them via kubernetes.
14:33
I've sent many patches to LTSP5, but most of them were abandoned. So I'm so glad that we have rreliable fork now! :-)
14:35
<uumas>
It's actually a complete rewrite from the same developer, alkisg so not actually a fork :)
14:36
<alkisg>
kvaps: example patch?
14:36
(hello to all)
14:36
<kvaps>
Yep, that's true. But I was really surprised that someone decided to dial with that.
14:37
<alkisg>
pavars: ltsp19 doesn't support thin clients; you'd need to use x2go or xfreerdp on top of ltsp19 for that
14:37
kvaps: I've been writing ltsp code for 10+ years now; but now with uefi a rewrite was needed...
14:37
Same with epoptes, when a rewrite to python3 (from 2) was needed, I spent a summer there too
14:38
<kvaps>
>example patch Grub2 support with efi, fixing NBD_TO_RAM option
14:39
I need to learn new source code, but I will be glad to contribute
14:39
<alkisg>
Ah, 2018, yeah it was too late then, as a rewrite was a better option than patching the old one
14:40
Sorry for that :)
14:42
And sure, patches are most welcomed for whatever's missing in ltsp19
14:42
<kvaps>
I'm going to add an option for use LTSP without graphic mode, it might be very useful for stateless servers. You know, I really like this use it for this case.
14:43
<alkisg>
I don't think I have any dependency on graphics, it should already run on headless servers
14:43
<pavars>
@alkisg we are going to change the clients to beefier ones so will leave them as fat, although I cant figure out how to install /etc/exports/ltsp-nfs.conf to get the home mount
14:43
<kvaps>
Cool, I'll check that, I just found new project :)
14:44
<alkisg>
I even managed to boot a plain `debootstrap` chroot, i.e. the minimal chroot
14:44
pavars: man ltsp-nfs, see the FSTAB line there
14:45
<kvaps>
Do I right understand that nfs is main method for distributing squashed image now?
14:45
<alkisg>
Yes, it's a lot more stable
14:45
<kvaps>
Agree with that
14:45
<alkisg>
You can even reboot the server and the clients will continue fine after reboot
14:45
Which was impossible with nbd
14:45
<pavars>
do I have to symlink a new user every time when someone new comes?
14:46
<alkisg>
pavars: symlink what where?
14:46
<pavars>
this part
14:46
mkdir /home/nfs
14:46
for u in guest01 guest02; do
14:46
mv "/home/$u" /home/nfs/
14:46
ln -s "nfs/$u" "/home/$u"
14:46
done
14:46
<alkisg>
ah sorry
14:46
that's for "safe nfs"
14:46
you only need an fstab line
14:46
<pavars>
I have added the line
14:46
<alkisg>
man ltsp.conf instead
14:46
and see fstab there
14:46
OK you only need that line, nothing more
14:47
<kvaps>
alkisg: we just using LTSP_NBD_TO_RAM option, it is working as a charm
14:47
<pavars>
do I need to run ltsp --home-dir=/home nfs --export-home=1 ?
14:47
<kvaps>
we can also add http booting method
14:48
<pavars>
for somewhat reason the clients are still not picking up the correct home
14:48
[clients]
14:48
# Specify an /etc/fstab line for NFS home; note this is insecure
14:48
FSTAB_NFS="192.168.88.20:/home /home nfs defaults,nolock 0 0"
14:48
<kvaps>
Hey is someone going to DevConf.cz? I'm going to talk about LTSP and network booted servers there

pavars: are you running `ltsp info` after changing ltsp.conf?
15:04
Also, what's your current /etc/exports.d/ltsp-nfs.exports like?
15:05
kvaps: see https://github.com/ltsp/community/issues; if you think creating a ru-community would be a good idea, I could surely do that
15:05
With issues (forum-like) and wiki etc
15:07
pavars: also, this would help from the client: showmount -e server
15:14
<pavars>
I'm moving the home folder now which takes forever, maybe that is an issue since we copied over from the old server

<pavars>
alright, thanks for the help, had to remove the /etc/exports.d/ltsp-nfs.exports and run the sudo ltsp nfs --nfs-home=1 which worked like a charm, currently the clients have 2 core cpu and 2gb ram, but it probably would be better with 4gb ram. Can anyone here suggest lowcost thin clients that would work for this, preferably refurbished as this drops the price significantly

we need at least 50 more clients
