<alkisg>
I've tested playing back video simultaneously to a dozen clients and it works fine on gigabit networks. I've used gstreamer to (a) read the input video only once, and (b) decode it only once. Without it, a dual core server can only decode a DVD video 4 times in real time => it can support only 4 clients. With this method, it could support e.g. 50 clients, so the only real limit is the network bandwidth.
00:19
Does anyone care to help in making a totem plugin for it in python?

<pembo13>
is dhpcd not required for ltsp-vmclient?
00:31
<Ryan52>
it is.
00:31F-GT has quit IRC
00:31
<Ryan52>
well, a dhcpd is required.
00:31
all that ltsp-vmclient does is runs a virtual thin client, just like any other thin client on your network.
00:32
(tho it attaches to the bridge by default, iirc)
00:32F-GT has joined #ltsp
00:32* Ryan52 wonders if I'm helping or just making it worse..
00:33
<Ryan52>
pembo13: ^^
00:33
<pembo13>
Ryan52: thanks for the nick reference, was KVMed ot another machine..reading
00:34
Ryan52: so i'm guessing i still need to configure the bridge+dhcp in order to get the client working?
00:34
<Ryan52>
yep.
00:34
<pembo13>
or do I need just dhcpd?
00:34
<Ryan52>
the vmclient attaches to the bridge.
00:35
so you don't need to have the bridge attached to any real network devices.
00:35
but you still need a bridge there, and dhcpd listening on it.
00:35
<pembo13>
Ryan52: and the bridge will see dhcpd without me attachign ethX ?
00:35
ok cool
00:35
Ryan52: the wiki wasn't very clear on that
00:35
<Ryan52>
which page explains this?
00:35
<pembo13>
well actually, it specifically said one could use the vmclient pre network setup
00:35
Ryan52: https://fedorahosted.org/k12linux/wiki/InstallGuide
00:35
nick me if anything
00:36
<Ryan52>
ok.
00:50
<pembo13>
is there a sample dhcpd.conf for ltsp?
00:50
i used the sample that comes with dhcpd, made some mods
00:50
started dhcpd
00:51
but the vmclient won't take an ip
00:51
if i tail /var/log/messages, i can see the DHCPDISCOVERS, and DHCPOFFERS
00:51
but the booting client doesn't accept it
00:51
<Ryan52>
hm. how did you install it?
00:52
and what os are you on?
00:52* Ryan52 assumes fedora, but which version?
00:53
<Ryan52>
ltsp installs it's own dhcpd service.
00:53
"service ltsp-dhcpd start"
00:53
and it'll go from there.
00:53
no need to set anything up.
00:53
<pembo13>
Ryan52: i have a fairly fresh install of Fedora 10 on my test machine
00:54
i installed via the ltsp-server ltsp-vmclient packages as descrived
00:54
ahh
00:54
ok
00:54
will trty that
00:56
Ryan52: that solved that problem
00:57
<Ryan52>
yay! :)
00:58
<pembo13>
i must have missed something
00:58
i don't have elf.ltsp
00:59
ugh
00:59
i i need internet to do that
00:59
stupid wifi card not accepting auth

hi everyone, I've got the ltsp server up and running and can boot clients etc, but, I'm wondering - is there any way of mounting the hard disk in the thin client?

I've looked in the manual and had a good look around the net but can't find anything about it

Hello! I have installed ubuntu 8.04 LTS server on my machine. I have installed ltps and have configured dhcp. The client boots into to the login screen but gives me an error message saying that .xsessions file is not present and window manager is not found. What should I do?
21:34
ogra: any inputs on my question?
21:36
The following is the exact script of the .xsessions-error file:
21:36
Xsession: X session started for shan at Fri Feb 6 19:16:34 IST 2009
21:36
Xsession: unable to start X session --- no "/home/shan/.xsession" file, no
21:36
"/home/shan/.Xsession" file, no session managers, no window managers, and no
21:36
terminal emulators found; aborting.
21:39
ogra: could you please throw some light on what I should be doing?
21:40
I have tried all documentations I could hit upon in Google but could not resolve the situation!
21:41
<jammcq>
cdshan: the problem is, you haven't installed any desktops
21:41
LTS server edition doesn't contain any desktops
21:41davidj has quit IRC
21:41
<jammcq>
so there's no Gnome there
21:42
I think if you 'apt-get install ubuntu-desktop', you might end up with all the pieces you need
21:42
<cdshan>
Ok, I thought installing ltsp-server would do that too.
21:42
<jammcq>
no, cuz there's no requirement that you run the desktop on the same server as the boot server
21:42
<cdshan>
ok, I got you point.
21:42
thanks for the pointer jammcq
21:43
<jammcq>
it'd be nice if it was clearly documented that you need a desktop
21:43
<cdshan>
very true
21:43
I didn't find any mention of it in any documentation on the web
21:44
not even on the mailing list, or forums, wiki, etc
21:44
I had been using ltsp for almost 10 years now and you have always been there to help me whenever I have had issues.
21:44
<jammcq>
yeah, it comes up every once in a while. It's not the kind of thing that lends itself to google tho.
21:44
<cdshan>
You are rocking!
21:44
<jammcq>
cdshan: hey, glad to help
21:45
<cdshan>
by the way do i have to do a chroot apt-get install ubuntu-desktop?
21:46
<jammcq>
no
21:46
it goes on the server
21:46
not in the chroot
21:46
<cdshan>
ok
21:46
I will try installing the desktop and get back if I have any issues
21:46
thanks for all the help
21:46
bye
21:48
jammcq:After installing the ubuntu-desktop do I have to do any ltsp-update or any other command?
21:48
<vagrantc>
shouldn't have to
21:48
<jammcq>
I don't think so
21:48
should be fine after installing that
21:49
<cdshan>
ok guys, thanks and I will be back if there are any other issues I am not able to work around.
21:49
<vagrantc>
i've been meaning to add some kind of desktop to ltsp-server-standalone depends/recommends in debian for quite some time now, but never really figured out what package to pull in on debian. gnome pulls in a lot of stuff i wouldn't want that's specific to standalone desktops...
21:50
i wish there was a gnome-barebones sort of package.
21:51
<cdshan>
We could atleast have some other light weight window manager like icewm installed by default
21:51
gnome and kde could be left to the users to decide
21:52
<vagrantc>
on the other hand, gnome is probably the best tested desktop for all of the LTSP features.
21:52
<cdshan>
true!
21:53
how come we still have the issue of applications running much after the user has logged out? I guess we have to use the gnome watchdog to get rid of such apps!
21:54
<vagrantc>
maybe gnome-session | x-session-manager | x-window-manager, x-terminal-emulator | xterm
21:54
<cdshan>
We have been having this problem, we run java applications and we have a script run every day just ensure that all old apps are killed
21:54
otherwise over a period of time this occupies a huge amount of system resources
21:55
jammcq: why is it that there is not much direct installation package and support for centos
21:56
as is provided for ubuntu or fedora
21:56
<vagrantc>
cdshan: because nobody from centos has done the work
21:57
<cdshan>
I thought so
21:57
too bad
21:57
<vagrantc>
because LTSP5 is integrated into the host distro, it requires people who understand the host distro to make the changes to the distro itself.
21:58
though warren's work on fedora should make it's way to centos eventually, if i understand it right.
21:58
<cdshan>
ok, hope that happens, I would prefer to work with cento rather than fedora
21:58
<vagrantc>
if only by way of RHEL
21:59
<cdshan>
Whlie installing ubuntu-desktop I got these error messages:

<cdshan>
vagrantc: any comment on the 404 error?
22:02
<jammcq>
try: apt-get update
22:02
before doing the 'apt-get install'
22:02
that'll update the package list to the most current
22:03
<cdshan>
ok, should I stop the install process and try it?
22:04
<vagrantc>
cdshan: if it's still downloading, that would be a good time to stop
22:04
it won't have to re-download stuff it already has
22:04
but if it started actually installed packages ... then that can be a bad time to stop it
22:05
probably not disasterous, but best to avoid if possible.
22:05
<cdshan>
ok, I will try it, it is only downloading now, so i can do it now.
22:08
that worked, those packages are getting downloaded now.
