Hi, is ltsp-cluster working with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with packages from distro? I'm makeing all via howto from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSP-Cluster, but without success.
08:49
when thin client boot, after uploading kernel from root server (it's ok)... in logs on root server (loadbalancer) are messages: ltsp-root00 ltsp-directory[17365]: ,ip=10.0.0.11,mac=52:54:00:31:DB:A3,display=0.0,code=2, - cannot_set_status: This message is not set in text-en.phpThis is not a valid IP address : appServIp=0.0.0.0

08:54
<alkisg>
mgli: ltsp-cluster doesn't appear to be actively maintained in recent years
08:56
<mgli>
ou.. and is any different solution how clustering LTSP application servers?
08:56
<alkisg>
No, some people are just doing it manually
08:57
E.g. there's some support for load balancing in upstream ltsp...
08:57
<mgli>
with dhcp sonfiguration...?
08:57
<alkisg>
DNS
08:57
With lts.conf
09:00
<mgli>
ok. Thanks
09:05
<der_baer>
mgli: there is a loadbalancing python script, witch reports heavy load from the appserver to LTSP Cluster Control, witch then shut change the the appserver for new booting clients. but since there is no documentation about that i guess nearly nobody is using this. We doing it also manually (one appserv for every department, and if one get some problems we migrate his clients to our reserve appserver VM, till we fix the problems)

der_baer: yes, my alterantive idea is 'balancing' app servers with dhcp. I have cca 35 clients with one ltsp server (this time) and for future i replace it for 2-3 servers like vmware guests and with dhcp for TC redirection manaulay clients with 'next-server' directive to different app sevrers...
09:53
der_baer:..but the idea of load balancing via ltsp-cluster is good
09:54
der_baer: ...but not working for me :-(

bennabiy: nothing ltsp related... :)
18:33
<bennabiy>
group membership?
18:33
<alkisg>
Groups are not related to ltsp either
18:33
<bennabiy>
so if audio works on the server, but not on the clients generated by ltsp-pnp method, it is not ltsp related?
18:34
<alkisg>
ltsp-pnp doesn't do anything different than plain ltsp wrt sound
18:34
LTSP fat clients are the same as normal installations, wrt sound
18:34
Server audio does not matter at all for fat clients
18:35
<bennabiy>
I guess my question is how would one get the right changes into the fat client image, if it is generated from a working server?
18:35
<alkisg>
What changes?
18:36
<bennabiy>
changes that would help the audio
18:36
<alkisg>
If you put the server disk into a client, and boot with it without using ltsp at all, it should have sound
18:36
No changes involved
18:36
<bennabiy>
yes, but the image generated from it is producing no sound on clients
18:36
when they have sound in a live-cd
18:37
<alkisg>
In all boots? Or only some of the times?
18:37
<bennabiy>
all boots
18:37
<alkisg>
And is the kernel you're using the same as the one in the live cd?
18:37
<bennabiy>
the server and the clients are all basically the same model machine as well
18:38
<alkisg>
The model doesn't matter, there's no concept of "installation of sound" in linux
18:38
<bennabiy>
I am just meaning hardware wise
18:38
<alkisg>
(09:37:47 μμ) alkisg: And is the kernel you're using the same as the one in the live cd?
18:38
<bennabiy>
that I am not sure
18:38
this is a remote install
18:38
I will have to look into it more
18:39
<alkisg>
Check the kernel, the loaded modules, the output of `amixer` and the kernel log + syslog
18:39
<bennabiy>
ok thank you
18:39
<alkisg>
LTSP fat clients don't do anything wrt sound
18:39
<bennabiy>
sorry for troubling you
18:39
<alkisg>
It's the same as local installations
18:40
But, if for example you're sending with tftp a kernel that doesn't exist in the nbd image,
18:40
<bennabiy>
just not as easily customizable
18:40
<alkisg>
then the modules aren't there
18:40
You can use a local installation as an ltsp fat client template
18:40
So you can "easily customize it"
18:40
<bennabiy>
I thought that was what I was doing by using the ltsp-pnp method
18:41
<alkisg>
Yup, more or less
18:41
<bennabiy>
but that is what is not working :)
18:41
<alkisg>
Nope
18:41
No code related to sound, sorry
18:41
Troubleshoot it
18:41
<bennabiy>
thank you

I have an interesting setup I am trying to run. Is is possible to set up ltsp to run "headless" (No GUI) clients?
21:07
Anyone every heard of this being done?
21:08
<vagrantc>
yes
21:08
what exactly do you want to run?
21:09
NateGraf: i've run all sorts of strange LTSP setups...
21:09
<NateGraf>
I am runnign an Unbuntu server and I would prefer to run CentOS clients. Although I need to run the clients as Fat clients.
21:10
<vagrantc>
console application? ssh? serial console?
21:10
<NateGraf>
ssh
21:10
<vagrantc>
don't really understand what you mean by fat client, then ... they would ssh to themselves?
21:11
if you just want ssh terminals, there's the ssh screen script ...
21:11
<NateGraf>
The server would ssh to the clients to control them. By Fat client I mean they need to run the procces on the client
21:12
<vagrantc>
ah.
21:12
well, anything you can do with a disked machine can be done with ltsp...
21:14
NateGraf: so, would you start the processes on the client via ssh, or just monitor them?
21:14
<NateGraf>
What do I need to do to a linux image to have it be bootable through ltsp? I want to start and monitor over SSH
21:15
<vagrantc>
LTSP isn't really a protocol, it's mostly scripts for creating images that are network booted...
21:16
so you'd create your CentOS image on a CentOS machine, and you should be able to copy that image over to the Ubuntu server...
21:17
<NateGraf>
Would the image work without modification?
21:17
<vagrantc>
though that's kind of diving into a lot of complications to start with, i'd recommend sticking with the same OS for oth environments until you understand the process
21:17
NateGraf: what image?
21:17
<NateGraf>
vagrantc: The CentOS clinet image. Could I copy it into the chroot and have it work?
21:18
<vagrantc>
you would replace the chroot with whatever image you want.
21:19
but it may require some tinkering and know-how to get it working right.
21:20
it's definitely possible, but i can't promise how easy it will be...
21:20
<NateGraf>
OK. That makes sense. One other thing is taht I noticed that LTSP is configured to use the same OS as the server by default. Does that mean if I use a installation of unbuntu with no GUI for the server, the client will be the same?
21:20
<vagrantc>
no
21:20
<NateGraf>
OK
21:21
<vagrantc>
well, if you're doing ltsp-pnp, maybe.
21:21
<NateGraf>
What is ltsp-pnp
21:21
<vagrantc>
you essentially build the LTSP image out of the server install, rather than using a chroot for the LTSP environment.
21:22
!ltsp-pnp | echo NateGraf
21:22
<ltsp`>
NateGraf ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
21:22
<vagrantc>
i'm not sure how many people have tried ltsp-pnp without a GUI.
21:22
<NateGraf>
That may give me what I want. Thank you for the help. I have a few things to try now.
21:22
