was just looking at my server load and noticed that openssh/sftp-server shows up for each user and takes quite a few CPU cycles. I thought everything went via NBD, or is that only for / and /home goes via SSH? this is on Xubuntu 14.04

<sbalneav>
vagrantc: ping, I am being driven literally bugnuts trying to stop wheezy from modeswitching the screen.
16:35
On boot.
16:35
It looks like it messes up my rez on these monitors/thin clients combos.
16:36
as a result, I end up with an X display thats 1280x768
16:36adrianorg has joined IRC (adrianorg!~adrianorg@177.132.222.43)
16:36
<sbalneav>
I've added "nomodeset" to the kernel boot
16:36
disabled /etc/init.d/console-setup
16:36
keeps doing it.
16:36
Any suggestions?
16:36
<vagrantc>
i haven't really found nomodeset to actually be useful
16:37
it either gets ignored, or causes even more problems...
16:37
<sbalneav>
I just want it to boot in the standard vga.
16:37* vagrantc tries to come up with better suggestions
16:37
<sbalneav>
Seems like this should be simple.
16:37
<vagrantc>
you can't change it with xrandr?
16:38
<sbalneav>
No
16:39
xrandr -q reports only mode available is 1280x768
16:39
<vagrantc>
i honestly don't have a solid grasp of modesetting
16:39
<sbalneav>
When it does the text mode change on boot, the bottom bit on the screen gets filled with "random vga fuzz"
16:39
and stays there
16:39
<vagrantc>
what driver?
16:39
<sbalneav>
Dunno.
16:40
It's an intel board.
16:40
<vagrantc>
there were some essentially unsolveable problems with some older intel video cards ... essentially hardware bugs
16:40
!intel
16:40
<ltsp`>
I do not know about 'intel', but I do know about these similar topics: 'ipxe', 'italc'
16:40
<sbalneav>
This is a pretty new board.
16:40
like 2 years old
16:40
<vagrantc>
ah
16:41
<sbalneav>
I'll keep plugging away at it.
16:41
If I smash my forehead hard enough, I'm sure I can figure it out :D
16:41
<vagrantc>
sbalneav: is this in an ltsp environment? could you try it outside of LTSP ?
16:41JuJuBee_ has joined IRC (JuJuBee_!~mike_knic@24-148-115-153.ip.mhcable.com)
16:41
<sbalneav>
ok, I'll try.
16:42
I'll have to do it tomorrow and report back, have to pop out soon and take my mom to the doctor.
16:42
<vagrantc>
if it works fine there, i might have to reconsider killing off all the screen hacks: https://bugs.debian.org/587900
16:43
sbalneav: X_VIRTUAL=false has worked in a few cases
16:43
er, X_VIRTUAL_AUTO=false
16:44
<JuJuBee_>
Greetings all.
16:44
I am still having issues with .dmrc file not being used to select users "preferred" session on login.
16:45
<vagrantc>
we should really consider using the xorg.conf.d infrastructure ... i *think* that's in upstream X.org
16:46
JuJuBee_: i recently fixed that in revision control, but haven't uploaded anywhere...
16:47
<JuJuBee_>
OK. so once you upload it and I dist-upgrade it should work again?
16:47
<vagrantc>
JuJuBee_: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp/+bug/1272889
16:47
maybe
16:47
<JuJuBee_>
lol
16:47
<vagrantc>
or you can try manually applying the patches
16:50
<JuJuBee_>
add the green remove the red as defined https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ltsp-upstream/ltsp/ldm-trunk/revision/1572
17:00
vagrantc: if I used "sudo ltsp-chroot update-alternatives --config x-session-manager" to select a session and the users manually create a .dmrc file with the .dmrc file be used?
17:01
<vagrantc>
JuJuBee_: the problem is that it validates the valid sessions by the presence of the session on the server, regardless of fat or thin client
17:02
<JuJuBee_>
so as long as any session available to the user is installed on server I should be ok?
17:02
<vagrantc>
JuJuBee_: so unless the server also has the same session types available, it will do nothing.
17:02
yes.
17:02
<JuJuBee_>
OK. Thanks
17:02
<vagrantc>
at least in theory.
17:02
<JuJuBee_>
I will test it
17:02
<vagrantc>
you could even probably "fake" it by installing the .desktop files without the actual packages...
17:03
<JuJuBee_>
I use a gui on my server since I am only serving a small classroom with 12 seats.
17:03
makes life a bit easier
17:12
<vagrantc>
JuJuBee_: you should be able to download a diff of that commit
17:13
JuJuBee_: https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ltsp-upstream/ltsp/ldm-trunk/diff/1572
17:13
although mabe the version you're running will have incompatbile changes...
17:20
<JuJuBee_>
vagrantc: so I applied the changes updated image had a student log out so he got the updated image and still not using what is in the dmrc file even though his selection *is* installed on the server
17:27
FWIW I use 14.04.1 64Bit on server and image
17:31
<vagrantc>
shouldn't matter.
17:31
it worked for me...
17:31
you've got NFS homedirs or something?
17:31
JuJuBee_: try deleting the ~/.dmrc
17:32
JuJuBee_: and then selecting a session on login ... does it create a ~/.dmrc on the server? does it respect it on subsequent logins? does it change it appropriately?
17:33
<JuJuBee_>
vagrantc: yes using nfs to mount home dirs.
17:33
<vagrantc>
it should still write to the server's ~/.dmrc regardless, and still work. hrm.
17:37JuJuBee_ has left IRC (JuJuBee_!~mike_knic@24-148-115-153.ip.mhcable.com, Ping timeout: 245 seconds)

17:38
<JuJuBee_>
vagrantc: so it is NOT creating the dmrc file
17:39
<vagrantc>
you using NFS or NBD?
17:40
<JuJuBee_>
I thought nbd since I created fat client
17:40
<vagrantc>
if NBD, did you regenerate the image after applying the patch?
17:40
<JuJuBee_>
I did regenerate image
17:40
<vagrantc>
fat/thin is unrelated to NFS/NBD
17:42
<JuJuBee_>
Oh, how do I check nbd?
17:42
<vagrantc>
if you ran ltsp-update-image you're using NBD.
17:43
this is Ubuntu?
17:43
<JuJuBee_>
Ues
17:43
Yes
17:43
<vagrantc>
ubuntu uses NBD by default. you'd have to jump through a lot of hoops to switch.
17:44
JuJuBee_: does it work with the patch applied and using sshfs?
17:44
i.e. drop your NFS homedir stuff
17:44
<JuJuBee_>
all I do is comment the fstab_0 statement to test?
17:45
<vagrantc>
and reboot
17:45
<JuJuBee_>
reboot server?
17:46
<vagrantc>
no, client
17:47freedomrun has left IRC (freedomrun!~quassel@unaffiliated/freedomrun, Read error: Connection reset by peer)
17:53
<JuJuBee_>
vagrantc: so I commented the fstab and rebooted. logged in and out changed session logged in and out and logged back in again. It maintained the last selected session, but there is still NO .dmrc file
17:54
hmmm something is strange. when I logged in the files I had were from the file server not the ltsp server. On the ltsp server I see .dmrc
17:56
Ah there is lts.conf in /var/lib/tftboot/ltsp/amd64 AND /opt/ltsp/amd64/etc/
17:56
Which one is used?
17:57klausade has joined IRC (klausade!~klaus@cm-84.215.153.179.getinternet.no)
18:01
<JuJuBee_>
I disabled fstab_0 from both and rebooted. Session selection is working now.
18:04
<vagrantc>
file server?
18:06Grembler has left IRC (Grembler!~Ben@cpc29-aztw22-2-0-cust128.18-1.cable.virginm.net, Quit: I Leave)
18:06
<vagrantc>
JuJuBee_: what does the file server serve? what's the LTSP server if it's not serving files?
18:06
all an LTSP server is with fat clients is a file server...
18:07
<JuJuBee_>
vagrantc: I use a file server as my gateway so my students can access files remotely from home... web pages etc. Don't want the ltsp server exposed.
18:07
<vagrantc>
the file server is the homedir server?
18:07
<JuJuBee_>
So I mounted /home using nfs on the /home on ltsp server and session switching works as expected
18:07
Yes, homedir
18:07
<vagrantc>
what serve's up the NBD root?
18:08
<JuJuBee_>
ltsp
18:08
<vagrantc>
yes, you need to have the homedirs be the same in all places.
18:09
<JuJuBee_>
last year (using ubuntu 12) I used FSTAB_0 staement in lts.conf to mount /home and everything was working fine
18:09
This year (upgraded to 14) not working
18:10
<vagrantc>
JuJuBee_: if you revert the patch to X50-dmrc-processing does it stop working?
18:10
<JuJuBee_>
dunno, let me check. Regen image right
18:10
<vagrantc>
yeah
18:11
JuJuBee_: the lts.conf should have some comments that tell you which to use
18:13
<JuJuBee_>
Looks like the one in /opt requires update-image according to comments. Does the one inn /var/lib... require update-image as well?
18:13
NM, I made change to the chroot so of course update-image
18:17
Recreating image now...
18:17
<vagrantc>
the one from tftp does not require updating the image, and will overwrite the one in /opt
18:18
though it may be looking for one in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386, if it's misconfigured
18:26
<JuJuBee_>
OK, restored X50-dmrc-processing and session selection works as expected
18:27
Seems like using FSTAB_0 is not working. Maybe something to do with homedir not mounting fast enough?
18:30
vagrantc: I have to go to my other job now. Is there any difference between using lts.conf to mount /home vs using fstab? I will check for response tomorrow. Thanks for the assistance.
