you can enable PXE booting for pi3, which will make ongoing maintenance easier, and make it more of a standard LTSP setup. the only tricker is manually maintaining the kernels, I'm not sure if those are updated in kernel packages in a repo

jonathan_: the best advice is not to use rpi's, but x86-based clients like the one above ^
16:35
rpi is not suitable for desktop, office, browsing and multimedia

It's fine for other tasks like programming and meteo stations
16:36
(actually, not programming, only for teaching programming... you can't compile serious projects with rpi)

<bennabiy>
I have had a funny situation happening when I take an ltsp-pnp generated image, extract it to a directory for a chroot, rebuild the image, it does not pick up the new image. It still boots the old image until I build a fat client image from scratch, and then move the chroot and such out of the way before I can get it to see that I have a different image, even if I force it to grab that image in dhcp etc
18:07
Not sure if that made a lick of sense, but it has been somewhat frustrating
18:09
Usually on the server, I get it mostly set up how I need it, but there is a lot of stuff which I could go crazy trying to pluck out, but could handle in a chroot environment to remove (like crontab entries, crypttab entries - selectively)

<alkisg>
JerryT: normally, from the menus, either from the session or from ldm (login screen) or from epoptes
18:57
bennabiy: you can use lts.conf commands to remove stuff, like INIT_COMMAND_01="rm -rf /path/to/file"
18:58
bennabiy: it doesn't make sense that it uses the old file, yeah, so maybe you didn't restart nbd server?
18:58
<bennabiy>
alkisg: forced a reload, restarted etc, nothing worked until I built something with ltsp-build-client
18:58
even though I did not use the created chroot
18:59
<alkisg>
bennabiy: are you talking about nbd, nfs, or tftp (initramfs)?
18:59
How did you check that the new system was not loaded?
19:02
<bennabiy>
thin vs fat, ltsp default ldm screen vs custom one
19:02

<alkisg>
This is how to test if your nbd-server servers the correct image
19:03
I.e. run that command from any client, either a booted system or even from the initramfs
19:04
Did you re-use the old image name (i386.img) or did you use a new one (i386-modified.img)?
19:05
<bennabiy>
I restarted isc-dhcp-server tftpd-hpa nbd-server etc multiple times
19:05
when it worked?

<alkisg>
I'm asking two things, (1) did you try to manually run nbd-client like I wrote above^?
19:06
And (2) ls /opt/ltsp/images, does that show one image or two?
19:06
<bennabiy>
it showed one image, and then when I updated the images it made a second image
19:06
I am not at the computer now
19:07
I just have noticed this happen twice now
19:07
I will test out what you suggested when it happens again
19:07
<alkisg>
If you are using two images, then you probably didn't configure them properly
19:07
<lucascastro>
Hello, days ago I've trying to use banana PI as thin client, but no success, ldm doesn't open up, I've started an shell then 'ssh -X' in server and called mate-session and worked fine.
19:08
is there some hint to debug why ldm isn't working?
19:08
<bennabiy>

19:13
<alkisg>
bennabiy: run that nbd-client command when you have a chance, and we'll see if it's an nbd-server issue or not. I haven't seen any such issue all these years.
19:13
<bennabiy>
