<GGD>
good afternoon all
13:58
i have a ubuntu LTSP question
13:59
<sbalneav>
!ask
13:59
<ltspbot>
sbalneav: "ask" :: Don't ask to ask a question, simply ask it, and if someone knows the answer, they'll respond. Please hang around for at least 15 minutes after asking a question, as not everybody constantly monitors the channel.
13:59
<GGD>
i can see the ltsp directory in my GUI but when i try to use the terminal i can't get to it
13:59
i am using 9.10
14:00
it says path not found
14:00
<sbalneav>
Are you trying this from the thin client?
14:00
<GGD>
no from the server
14:01
<sbalneav>
How are you "trying to get to it" from the terminal?
14:01
<GGD>
in the gui its a slight latency to get to it but i get to it
14:01
using the CD command
14:01
<sbalneav>
Can you please show us the exact command you're using?
14:01
<GGD>
hold on
14:02
cd /opt/ltsp/i386
14:03
<sbalneav>
Is there anything in /opt/ltsp?
14:03
<GGD>
i can't get to that dir
14:03
using cd command
14:03
but in the gui i can see the fodlers
14:03
folders rather
14:04
<sbalneav>
Is there anything in /opt?
14:04
<GGD>
in the gui,,, it shows the ltsp and images folders
14:04
no nothing on the CLI
14:04
<sbalneav>
please paste the output of the following command to the pastebot:
14:05
ls -l /opt
14:05
!pastebot
14:05
<ltspbot>
sbalneav: "pastebot" :: The LTSP pastebot is at http://ltsp.pastebin.com. Please paste all text longer than a line or two to the pastebot, as it helps to reduce traffic in the channel. Don't forget to paste the URL of the text here.

14:06
<sbalneav>
Are you the sole administrator of this machine?
14:06
<GGD>
yes
14:07
its a test machine as i am trying something that i found
14:07
using ltsp
14:07
<sbalneav>
Are you already IN the chroot?
14:07
<GGD>
i think so
14:08
i did a sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 command already
14:08
<sbalneav>
Then of course you won't see it.
14:08
<GGD>
oh
14:08
<sbalneav>
you're already IN it.
14:08
<GGD>
ahh forgive me i am sorta new to ubuntu
14:08
<sbalneav>
Have you read the docs?
14:08
<GGD>
i use fedora mostly
14:08
<sbalneav>
!docs
14:08
<ltspbot>
sbalneav: "docs" :: For the most current documentation, see https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ltsp/index.php?title=Ltsp_LtspDocumentationUpstream
14:09
<GGD>
i am reading right now
14:09
thank you
14:10
<sbalneav>
To "get out" of the chroot command, you'll need to type "exit"
14:13
<GGD>
ok
14:13
i didn't know there was different shells so to speak
14:15
<sbalneav>
All the chroot command does is reposition where "root" is
14:15
Normally, root lives... well, where root is. /
14:16
by doing a "chroot /opt/ltsp/i386", then /opt/ltsp/i386 becomes the "new" root.
14:16
when you cd /, it looks as if you're in /
14:16
but you're at /opt/ltsp/i386
14:16
<GGD>
ahh and you can't ll or dir in it..
14:17
<sbalneav>
Well, you can, sure.
14:17
ls will work. Any command that's been installed in the chroot will work.
14:18
in the ltsp chroot is a mini-installation of linux, so quite a few things work as expected in the chroot.
14:18
but /opt/ltsp/i386 isn't IN the chroot. If it was, that'd be (outside the chroot) /opt/ltsp/i386/opt/ltsp/i386
14:18
<GGD>
ahh and that is the folder that when you pxe from the server thats what your boot into
14:18
<sbalneav>
Correct.
14:18
<GGD>
gotcha now
14:18
<sbalneav>
for the thin client, that's it's root.
14:19
<GGD>
gotcha now
14:19
its a little different
14:19
<sbalneav>
No, it's been used for years.
14:19
It's exactly the same process linux uses to install to a hard drive.
14:19rjune has joined #ltsp
14:20
<sbalneav>
When you boot off the cdrom, and start installing to the hard drive, linux uses exactly the same chroot command to get the work done.
14:20
it's just not a tool that most users interact with.
14:22
<GGD>
ahh and you put that into the OS as a sub directory
14:24
<sbalneav>
Going afk for a bit, gotta move some servers around.

hmmm
14:48
now my server doesn't want to get packages
14:51
<johnny>
if you're doing it from the chroot , you do need to copy /etc/resolv.conf into the chroot
14:52
<GGD>
oh ok
14:53
<johnny>
that is.. if your problem is resolving dns
14:53
<GGD>
it keeps giving me a package can not be found erro
14:54
rror
14:55
<johnny>
didyou run apt-get update && apt-get upgrade?
14:56
<GGD>
not yet
14:57
i jsut did
14:57
and it failed

15:25
<johnny>

15:25
<GGD>
ok...
15:25
how do i do that?
15:25
<johnny>
delete it
15:26
open up the file.. delete the line..
15:26
or pop in the cd.. if you have one..
