07:48
1.1G
07:48
<cliebow>
nothing 8~)
07:48
<J45p3r>
there are tons of files in there, all pretty small, but it adds up I guess
07:51
<cliebow>
When submitting mail by using sendmail as a mail submission program,
07:51
sendmail copies all messages to /var/spool/clientmqueue first.
07:52
id be tempted to set em aside.then throw em out if nothing breaks
07:52
if sendmail isnt running they accumulate

<milosz>
so anyways, i'm trying to figure out which server i should pick to be the best one
11:11
in my automatic server picking code
11:11
but i haven't come to go solution yet
11:13
right now the values i have to play with are: responce time, number of cpus, load, memory used and physical memory on the server

hello all

13:37
<gvy>
hi jamm
13:38
milosz, and?
13:41
<jammcq>
I just reloaded my laptop. it takes forever to get moved into a new install
13:49
<gvy>
hm, what happened to usual dist-upgrade? my apt (apt-rpm) handles that just ok
13:50
<jammcq>
i've been running feisty since about february. but somewhere along the way, some updates didn't go very well. Some things just weren't working properly, so I decided on a complete re-install, before heading to spain for the uds
13:50
so far, the things that weren't working, are now working beautifully
13:50
and it seems to boot up and shutdown MUCH faster now
13:51
<gvy>
ugh. sad if ubuntu heads right into windowsish 3R way
13:51
i mean "leads its unsuspecting users"
13:51
<jammcq>
I think it's more a matter of using a beta version, and having updates get screwed up
13:51* gvy clips his eyes @ogra
13:52
<gvy>
jammcq, well i'm on altlinux unstable for years
13:52
the only problems which would require final "re" were disk-related...
13:52
when root partition could be trusted no more
13:53
<jammcq>
there were some gnome updates that failed on me back in march
13:53
since then, things have been problematic
13:53
if I clicked on the shutdown icon, the screen would freeze
13:53
launching gnome took about 60 seconds
13:53
gdm themes where messed up
13:54
i'm much happier now
13:54
<gvy>
well, in the end it's the system that should serve the user, not the other way around, so 'grats :)
13:55
but that *seems* like resolver troubles (or something like that, network timeouts tend to result in "freezes" for something in between of 30 to 180 seconds usually)
13:55
<jammcq>
yeah, I know how that goes, but I don't think that was the issue
13:55
sometimes gconfd would die on me
13:56
<gvy>
i've usually solved weird problems within 3 hours -- when reinstall wouldn't be a sport...
13:56
<jammcq>
i'm a firm believer of a good re-install every once in a while

14:52
I'm doing pretty good

15:02
<milosz>
gav, and?
15:03
i'm stuck of thinking where to go next
15:04
my idea is to trow away all the server that a) don't respond b) respond too slow c) have more memory used then they have availble (swap) d) load is more then number of processors
15:04
and then pick the one with least users... from the reamining ones
15:04
<gvy>
milosz, ah, so multiserver configuration
15:05
was thinking a bit different thing...
15:05* gvy runs ltsp in openvz containers
15:05
<milosz>
but that dosen't account very well for if all your machines are busy
15:06
<jammcq>
busy? or too busy?
15:06
<milosz>
gvy: it would work for you if you wanted to run multiple ltsp servers in diffrent containers and have things work auto magicaly
15:06
busy
15:06
<jammcq>
milosz: there should be a config file, with settings for 'Skip hosts that are swapping', 'Skip hosts that don't answer query'
15:06
<milosz>
jammcq: i thought about that too
15:07
<gvy>
milosz, well we're planning to roll out second container as the first one is production and ok
15:07
then add disks and two more gigs of ram and add another twenty users
15:07
it's 2x2 core opterons
15:07
<milosz>
i've had some weighted averages (did a couple diffrent statistical formulas)
15:08BlueDragon has quit IRC
15:08
<gvy>
milosz, is there a wiki page on that? might be very convenient to get people who would need/do the same
15:09
<milosz>
no there is non, the code is like 90% there, i can publish the branch on www
15:09
<gvy>
thanks
15:09
<milosz>
sure
15:10
jim, like how would like to have it behave
15:10
since you've setup plenty of deployments i figure you'd have a good insight
15:12* jammcq wonders how many deployements people think he's setup
15:13
<milosz>
okay, jim i'm at one real one... so i'm thinking more then me
15:13
<jammcq>
heh, so i've done twice as many as you :)
15:13* gvy two LTSPs and something like a dozen of homegrowns
15:14
<gvy>
production, i mean
15:14
<jammcq>
yeah, if I count my house, it's a grand total of 3
15:14
<milosz>
anyways our setup here will this summer time will include 5 boxes total for thin client servers
15:14
we're getting 3 more boxes, dual quad-cores
15:14
<gvy>
our office... national institute of cybernetics... and all over ukraine
15:15
<jammcq>
milosz: sounds cool. is school out yet?
15:15
<milosz>
yeah it is
15:15
<gvy>
milosz, sometimes lightening the desktop helps more than multiplying cores
15:15
<milosz>
in our case people run a lot of scientific applications
15:15
<gvy>
e.g. dump gnome/ubun... and kick e.g. xfce in
15:16
<milosz>
so our desktop cpu/memory usage is neglible
15:16
<gvy>
ah
15:16
incyb has a 80-node cluster. :)
15:17
<milosz>
i'll be in california for the next two months
15:17
and then i'm moving to ann arbor
15:18
but i'm taking one of the thin clients boxes
15:18
cause it's fun to hack on them
15:18
<gvy>
actually the first bunch of terminals deployed is exactly for cluster folks
15:18
milosz, yeah
15:18
a colleague hacking on ltsp5 looked an picoITX mobo
15:18
<milosz>
i'm thinking coming out with something way smater for version 2.0 using xmove to let people suspend their session and resumee them
15:19
<gvy>
seems like he wants his hands on it. :)
15:19
milosz, nx?
15:20
<milosz>
well for us at school it be extending the multi server infastructure to allow people to sit on one thin client "susspend" the session and come back to the diffrent one
15:20
and eventualy i'm planing to include nx support
15:20
<gvy>
would be nice to hear back from you, very interesting a topic
15:20
<milosz>
since nx is a hack, but it's simple and elegant (in some casses)
15:21
yeah man, i'm always around
15:22
i'm also thinking of buying a linuxtop
15:22
since that one uses linux bios, i'd like to adapt it for ltsp; mostly for the 10 second bottime i could get out of it
15:24
some of the epia mobos are supported too, so i might buy one of your thin clients with intention of getting it working (or breaking it, whatever comes first)

hey guys, could one of you give me a portscan
15:45
<jammcq>
mistik1: whaddya need?
15:47
<mistik1>
I need to test my settings
15:48
<jammcq>
tell me what to scan, and I'll do it
15:48
<mistik1>
69.114.245.233
15:48
that's the IP
15:48
<jammcq>
any special args to nmap you want?
15:48
<mistik1>
not sure
15:49
I'm no nmap guru
15:49
Just throw everything you can at me
15:49
<jammcq>
Note: Host seems down. If it is really up, but blocking our ping probes, try -P0
15:49
Nmap finished: 1 IP address (0 hosts up) scanned in 4.052 seconds
15:49
<mistik1>
ping scan definately wont work
15:49
try as they say, -P0
15:49
<jammcq>
i'm no nmap guru either
15:49
it's running now
15:50
<mistik1>
ok
15:51
<milosz>
gvy, my work will be availble @ http://ltsp.mindtouchsoftware.com/
15:51
as soon as dns propages
15:54
<mistik1>
jammcq: still scanning?
15:55
<jammcq>
All 1697 scanned ports on ool-4572f5e9.dyn.optonline.net (69.114.245.233) are filtered
15:55
Nmap finished: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 341.611 seconds
15:55
that's all it says, so...... seems like your firewall is working
15:56
<mistik1>
excellent!, thanks man
