<elias_a>
He is in disguise. :O
12:41
<markit>
alkisg_android: ah, hi :) I did not noticed your nick, my bad :) How are you? Me on holiday (at home, in the near future I will have to "upgrade" an 12.04 ltsp installation to 16.04, btw, so nightmare coming ;P)
12:42
<alkisg_android>
haha... using kde or mate?
12:43
<markit>
alkisg_android: kde of course ;P
12:44
I've already an 16.04 ltsp installation so works AFAIR
12:44
<alkisg_android>
nightmare then! hehe joking
12:45
<markit>
is just that I use also some backport repos (for kde), and usually upgrade does not end with a working system, so I will have to remove the most of kde I can and then reinstall
12:45
maybe with a separate /home and a reainstallation would be much better/faster/reliable, but I have no separate /home
12:46
btw, also I think to swith to pnp version, but there are 24 clients and don't know if dnsmasq will create some issues (like I remember happend in the past)
12:47
<alkisg_android>
proxy mode or normal mode?
12:47
in normal setups there are no issues...
12:49
<markit>
alkisg_android: normal mode... I remember dnsmasq was not very bright in providing ip/pxe b oot to multiple requests, or I remember wrongly?
12:50
<alkisg_android>
it doesnt background ping requests
12:50
<markit>
I've also to update the wiki with the "discoveries" I made when you helped me with pnp the first time (some little issue/tricks)
12:50
<alkisg_android>
shouldnt be an issue with only 24 clients
12:50
<markit>
ok :)
12:50
<alkisg_android>
you can also use isc dhcp with ltsp pnp
12:51
but why you dont use proxydhcp?
12:51
<markit>
ah! documented somwhere? Much more difficoult?
12:51
<alkisg_android>
isc dhcp is documented with the normal ltsp mode
12:51
<markit>
I've 2 nic in the server, ltsp network is separated from the router/dhcp, and I like it to be so (wifi is also on the router side)
12:51
<alkisg_android>
pnp doesnt care about which one you use
12:52
<markit>
fine, I still miss the "fundamentals", sigh
12:52
wife is calling, I've to run... thanks a lot see you later :)

<xKill>
hi...somebody knows if there's a way to improve firefox on ltps without using fatclients or localapps? im using 45 currently cause 46 or newer hangs my server when running on clients. any help will be appreciated.
17:40
<alkisg>
Use firefox esr?
17:41
<xKill>
whats esr?
17:41
im compiling 52 esr with gtk2 support
17:41
<alkisg>
Extended support release, an older version of firefox that is maintained for more years
17:43
<xKill>
ah ok, well, as I said, im compilint that 52.3 with gtk2, from 53 and so, gtk2 support is removed...
17:43
but it would become old eventually so I want to get a solution
17:43
<alkisg>
Unfortunately many upstream applications don't care about performance over the network anymore
17:44
That's why ltsp is now suggesting fat clients and not thins
17:44
We can't fix so many upstream applications, cairo, firefox etc etc
17:44
<xKill>
I've tryed it with localapps.. but my clients have low specs
17:45
I've tryed chrome but it has some graphic issues
17:45
*tried

<alkisg>
That's about all you can do though
17:46
Time for better clients...
17:46

cheap-client: (#1) http://www.gearbest.com/tv-box-mini-pc/pp_343636.html, or (#2) https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/New-arrival-Beelink-Pocket-Z83-Windows-10-Mini-PC-Z8300-64bit-1-84GHz-2GB-RAM-32GB/1871240_32640039781.html
17:46
<xKill>
yes.. i have to replace a lot of clients, like 200 lol
17:47
<alkisg>
Yup :)
17:48
<xKill>
Ok, thanks for your help, I thought I was missing something

!thin-client-bandwidth

<ltsp>
I do not know about 'thin-client-bandwidth', but I do know about these similar topics: 'thin-clients-bandwidth'
17:48
<alkisg>
!thin-clients-bandwidth
17:48
<ltsp>
thin-clients-bandwidth: A small explanation why thin clients can't perform well with video, lots of screen updates etc: https://sourceforge.net/p/ltsp/mailman/message/35694699/
17:48
<alkisg>
...something more to read... in general, sending the screen over the network isn't a good idea nowadays
17:49
So fat clients is the best default; thin clients should only be used until enough money is found to upgrade to fats :)
17:49
<xKill>
yes I know, and I 've tried fatclients and loved them
17:49
but for now I cant afford them
17:50
so I want to give my actual clients a few years more of life lol
17:50
<alkisg>
Sometimes putting e.g. 5 fat clients and 5 thins on the same server, instead of 10 thins, makes performance a lot better
17:50
So a partial upgrade can help too
17:50
Sure, we're still using p3 clients here
17:50
But of course we know the limitations, how slow it can be etc
17:51
I assume you're using LDM_DIRECTX and 16 bpp, right?
17:51
<xKill>
i used localapps, firefox did better but it still slow
17:51
yes
17:51
<alkisg>
OK, that's the best you can do then (except for downgrading to obsolete software, of course...)
17:51
<xKill>
lol
