<gord_>
hi, i have problem on LTSP clients served by a Ubuntu 8.04 LTSP, googling and reading has produced several (many) conflicting snippets but no definite answers, I have mainly Compaq EN SFF clients from p2/350 to p3/600. Network is zero load, all test lab, only 1 client booted at a time. 10/100 switched infra. PROBLEM: Video apps refuse to play all video formats, tried Mplayer, VLC etc they open briefly, display no video nor sound, then app wi
06:25
ndow closes again. Even very low bandwidth lecture files (they play perfect on full/thick client 233mmx/256MB as well as thin client+hdd local install of 8.04. All files play fine on server, up to 10 at a time using same apps. QUESTION: specifically, is video playback possible _at all_ using LTSP to thin clients? or am I missing something fundemental.? feel free to slap me :)
06:27
server was upgrade from gutsy to hardy if that matters for any gotchas
06:28
also, puzzling, several different laptops/notebooks cant play vids either, boted via PXE with nice specs (600>900US$ machines new)
06:29
nor can many current desktops with high specs. All run normal desktop apps fine (v. fast)
06:29
<ogra>
did you properly rebuild your client during the upgrade ?
06:29
<gord_>
the ltsp was not built at time of upgrade to hardy 804
06:29
<ogra>
and also did you install eh needed codecs (teh ubuntu-restricted-extras package depends on all of them)
06:30
you need to rebuild the client env ...
06:30
<gord_>
yes all codecs installed, AHH u mean codecs in client env? chrooted?
06:30
<ogra>
move the old /opt/ltsp/i386 dir away and re-run sudo ltsp-build-client before you test anything else
06:31
a lot has changed between the two releases, a new server needs the new client env as well
06:31
<gord_>
wildo, thanks. fundemental but i missed it :)
06:31
<ogra>
no, i mean on the server
06:31
the cliet only displays the pictures, all processing is done on the server, so you indeed need the codecs that
06:31
<gord_>
yes, not revuilt ion serves since some codecs and stuff. needs doin probably, i come back if still probs
06:31
<ogra>
s/that/there/
06:32

lol need new keyboard/fingers here too
06:32
i now realise i shoud have clean installed the server before i started confusing myself

<Blinny>
Gadi: G'morning. Just back from a stint off. Have you looked at the process killing script on user logout any more since.. well, a few weeks ago?
08:57
<Gadi>
Blinny: hey - yeah, I was looking for you at various points last week - in case you wanted to continue the quest
08:57
I had made some changes since we left off
08:57
but, still have not had a chance to test much myself
08:57
lemme pull up what Ieft off with...
08:58
!pastebot
08:58
<ltspbot>
Gadi: "pastebot" is The LTSP pastebot is at http://pastebot.ltsp.org. Please paste all text longer than a line or two to the pastebot, as it helps to reduce traffic in the channel. A link to the content will be pasted in the channel.
08:58
<Blinny>
Gadi: You are teh awesomez. And stuff. Let me check it out.
08:59
<ltsppbot>
"Gadi" pasted "draft of rc.d script to kill old user procs" (36 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/3
08:59
<Gadi>
One of the changes I made, was to grab the *newest* sshd process
08:59
which basically corresponds to the current ssh socket
09:00
and avoid killing *it*
09:00makghosh has joined #ltsp
09:00
<Gadi>
while killing all other processes
09:00
That *should* be a safe approach
09:00
(amazing what a '-n' flag will do) :)
09:01
<Blinny>
That and the path to kill are the only diff's I see.
09:01
heh
09:01
<Gadi>
ah, oops
09:01
<Blinny>
How do I ensure it's fired at login?
09:01
<Gadi>
forgot to fix that
09:02
its /bin/kill, right?
09:02
<Blinny>
Yes.
09:02
<Gadi>
it is an rc.d script
09:02
for ldm
09:02
remember?
09:03twinprism has joined #ltsp
09:03yanu has quit IRC
09:03
<Blinny>
Oh, I know. I just couldn't get it to fire unless run manually.
09:03
<Gadi>
it should fire as long as you make it: S15checkuser
09:03
or some such
09:03
and put it in the rc.d directory for ldm
09:03
<Blinny>
wxrwxr-x 1 root root 1135 2008-06-30 10:01 S30-check-processes
09:04
in ldm/rc.d yes.
09:04
<Gadi>
hmm...
09:04
<Blinny>
I had it at S01 but someone last week said to bump down the priority.
09:04
<Gadi>
the only thing I can think of is I wonder if LDM_USERNAME is exported to the environment for rc.d
09:04
hmm...
09:05
as a test, edit the script and at the top, put: LDM_USERNAME=yourUser
09:05
and then log in as that user
09:05
you are using ahrdy?
09:05
*hrady
09:05
<Blinny>
Yes.
09:05
<Gadi>
*hardy
09:05
<Blinny>

09:05
<Gadi>

Correct. I'm logged in right here.

<Gadi>
ah
09:10
<Blinny>
I'm beginning to feel schizophrenic!
09:10
<Gadi>
one sec - lemme look at ldm.c for a sec
09:10
<Blinny>
Ok.
09:10
<Gadi>
maybe DISPLAY is not exported
09:10
actually, you could do this:
09:10
in the script, make some lines like:
09:10
echo $DISPLAY >> /tmp/junk
09:11
<Blinny>
ah yah good call.
09:11
<Gadi>
echo $LDM_USERNAME >> /tmp/junk

re-rolling & rebooting
09:13
That'll output on the thin client env, correct?
09:13joebaker has quit IRC
09:14
<Gadi>
right
09:14
<Blinny>
Yeah. Looks like LDM_USERNAME is blank.
09:14
DISPLAY outputs :6
09:14
<Gadi>
and, it appears that is the problem
09:14
LDM_USERNAME is not exported to the environment
09:14
crap
09:14
<Blinny>
SOCKET outputs the full /var/run/... path
09:14
<Gadi>
I had thought it was
09:14
<Blinny>
Gadi: If that's the only problem, why did it not Just Work when explicitly specifying LDM_USERNAME
09:15
<Gadi>
maybe that was only in my hacks that didnt get merged
09:15
well, that's abother good question
09:15
perhaps it died before it got to xmessage
09:15
<Blinny>
Let me try with both the echo's and the LDM_USERNAME specified
09:15
<Gadi>
because a lot of those commands are bad if LDM_USERNAME is empty
09:15
<Blinny>
I'm not exporting though, just LDM_USERNAME=myUser correct?
09:16
<Gadi>
yeah, that should be fine
09:16
<Blinny>
Rebooting.
09:17
<Gadi>
ah, you may want to change the word "you're" in your xmessage to: "you are"

I don't know how it will like the single quote

09:18
Good catch.
09:18
OK. Correctly, LDM_USERNAME is spit out to /tmp/junk when specified.
09:19
<Gadi>
exporting LDM_USERNAME into the env is a 2-line patch to ldm
09:19
<Blinny>
So, maybe it's just the parsing of the '

09:22
<Blinny>
The 'Kill session' works great.
09:22
<Gadi>
ok - well, we need to patch ldm then,
09:22
<Blinny>
Two issues: Cancel should return to LDM greeter, yes? And, the button needs to be centered.
09:23
<Gadi>
heh, well, i'll let you work on the cosmetics of the button
09:23
<Blinny>
Just a -center before -buttons
09:23
<Gadi>
ah, ok
09:23
:)
09:24
in terms of returning to the greeter, we should have cancel kill the local ldm process, probably
09:24
<Blinny>
Is it possible to cancel the current login process when the user clicks Cancel?
09:24
<Gadi>
so that it respawns
09:24
<Blinny>
Is that the only one?
09:24
<Gadi>
well, killing that should take care of things, I think
09:24
<Blinny>
(and will we run into longer-term problems b/c we're not restarting the xserver?)
09:24
(as I recall hearing that a logout usually resets the xserver)
09:24
<Gadi>
you are restarting the xserver
09:24
<Blinny>
:s;resets;restart
09:24
<Gadi>
when ldm respawns
09:24
<Blinny>
Oh. Dig.
09:25
<Gadi>
so, I guess we can call a pkill ldm or some such
09:25
hmm...
09:25
<Blinny>
Shouldn't we be able to just ldmProc=$(ssh -X -S ${LDM_SOCKET} ${LDM_SERVER} "/usr/bin/pgrep -n -u ${LDM_USERNAME} ldm") and then pkill -n ?
09:26
er, pkill

any suggestions on a kiosk style browser that can allow pdf files to be opened. I can't seem to get rkeiosk or openkeisk (=exactly what i need) to play nice with any sort of popup

just backported ldm 2.0.6 to etch, for those that use the backports ...

debian backports, that is
16:15* ogra applauds

16:17
<vagrantc>
didn't really require any changes ... just merged my ldm-debian-packaging into ldm-etch-backports-packaging, resolved a few trivial conflicts, and tested :)
16:17
definitely like it when it goes like that.
16:17
<ogra>
well, you likely need ltspfs as well ... no ?
16:18
<vagrantc>
well, i backported that a long time ago ...
16:19
<ogra>
ah
16:19
<vagrantc>
although it's a couple versions behind still ...
16:19
still works :)
16:19
<ogra>
i think i'll have my first backports ever from intrepid to hardy now ...
16:19
<vagrantc>
i'll probably try and backport ltsp and ltspfs next :)
16:19* ogra just tests fedoras liveusb-creator
16:20
<vagrantc>
backports are really nice when you don't have to make many changes
16:20
<ogra>
once in my life i touch a fedora tool and not even warren is around ...
16:20
<vagrantc>
because supporting increasingly disparate versions is a headache
16:21
ogra: what's fedora's liveusb-creator got going for it?
16:22
<ogra>
well, its a frontend to dd
16:22
<vagrantc>
if i had to do that for debian, i'd probably use debian-live or maybe even ltsp :)
16:22
<ogra>
nothing more
16:22
<vagrantc>
oh.
16:22
heh.
16:22
<ogra>
just dd*ing an iso to USB key
16:22
and offering you a device selection puldown for that
16:22
<vagrantc>
impressive.
16:23
<ogra>
heh
16:23
our OEM team looks for a free tool to give to windows users for putting images on USB ...
16:24
so i'm inspecting possibilities
16:24
that tool seems to be not it though, it just exploded in my face
16:25
telling me there is not enough free space on the empty 2G key to put a 700M image on it
16:27* vagrantc steps on blackberry thorns and pokes nice holes in vagrantc's feet
16:27
<vagrantc>
this may, strangely enough, bode well for backporting more stuff
