21:39 | <padikiller[m]> Hello. I am new to LTSP and have succesfully loaded a client image with AUTOLOGIN. I set CUPS-SERVER to "localhost" to allow staff to use their local printers and it seems to work, but the settings disappear on every reboot. Is there a way to make printers persistent? Thanks in advance for any help.

21:49 | <padikiller[m]> I am an attorney and have a case than involves more than 44 million pages of documents and huge databases along with more than 10TB of video. The information is extremely sensitive and I need to monitor and secure it carefully. That is my primary reason for using LTSP.
| |
21:52 | <fiesh> you have CUPS_SERVER (note the underscore, not the hyphen) set in your lts.conf?
| |
21:52 | <quinox> just a random bit of info: be sure to destroy the harddrives inside printers when the printers break down and you have to toss them. Printers often cache files you print, and these are recoverable
| |
21:52 | <fiesh> how *can* a reboot even affect this, it should work right after the reboot
| |
21:53 | <padikiller[m]> Misspelling in my post, not in ltsp.conf. Thanks for catching that
| |
21:54 | <fiesh> you may possibly want to set LDM_PRINTER_DEFAULT to your default printer in case there are more than one device and you're talking about the wrong device being selected by default
| |
21:55 | <padikiller[m]> On the test client, it booted to Mint just fine and it allowed me to add a USB printer that I plugged into the test client. Worked like a champ. But when I rebooted the test client, I had to install the USB printer again from scratch
| |
21:56 | Thank you for your good advice about printer storage.
| |
21:58 | <fiesh> I think you're misunderstanding the purpose of this, the printer would have to be hooked up to the server to be persistently usable by all clients
| |
21:58 | the clients will not share the printers amongst each other
| |
22:01 | <padikiller[m]> I have about 30 people reviewing documents and I would like each of them to have a USB printers that I lock up every night along with 30 diskless laptops. When people come in, if possible, I would like them to plug in the printer into their diskless laptop, boot up and start working. I am leery of allowing them to print to network printers. Right now, I can do that, but I just have to install the printer for them from scratch every
| |
22:01 | morning.
| |
22:02 | <fiesh> ok dumb question though, why do you reboot every day?
| |
22:03 | <padikiller[m]> Security
| |
22:03 | Lock up devices at end of day
| |
22:03 | For the reason you stated
| |
22:04 | <fiesh> not sure how that matters if they're diskless, to be honest
| |
22:04 | I mean theft ok, but information safety, stealing them will erase all memory content
| |
22:06 | <padikiller[m]> I intend to give different access by MAC for some
| |
22:07 | Plan is to keep them in a locker
| |
22:07 | Until the end of the project (+/- 18 months)
| |
22:08 | <fiesh> padikiller[m]: I'm a total cups-noob, but I'd assume there should be a way to do the printer hookup by script
| |
22:09 | padikiller[m]: so I'd attempt to write such a script and just have people execute it after they plug in their printers
| |
22:09 | <padikiller[m]> So far, this is only hitch... LTSP worked great right out of the box as described
| |
22:09 | It is a great rescource
| |
22:10 | I bet there is really simple way to do it with a script or a setting
| |
22:11 | <fiesh> https://www.cups.org/doc/admin.html
| |
22:11 | it should be quite doable
| |
22:12 | <padikiller[m]> Thanks!
| |
22:12 | Will take a look at it tomorrow
| |
22:12 | <fiesh> good luck with it
| |
22:24 | <padikiller[m]> Thanks again. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
| |
22:47 | <fiesh> same to you!
