Why in the LTSP docs apparently there is no word about fat clients?
07:46
(In ltsp.org i say)
07:50
It's OK that this topic is taken only on distro-secific documentation?
08:01
If someone one day want to add fat clients documentations in ltsp.org wiki, can? Or is better no because it's a thing related to the distro?
08:01
<alkisg>
We don't have enough people for documentation
08:02
<valeriobozzolan>
Ahn! :)
08:02
<alkisg>
We started fat clients 3-4 years ago, noone has come up to document them
08:02
<valeriobozzolan>
Clear :)
08:02
<alkisg>
If you want, you can become a documentation person :)

Always, if i works on something and I must remember how i've done it, I edit the related wiki of the project.

Hi Hyperbyte :)
09:43
<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, I need to cut down on bandwith usage on my network with fat clients. Any tricks?
09:44
NBD compression, for example? Or is that already enabled with ltsp-pnp?
09:50
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: it's already enabled, unless you upgraded from stock 12.04
09:51
Hyperbyte: you can use local nbd caching
09:51
!local-boot
09:51
<ltsp>
local-boot: If you want LTSP fat clients on a low-speed network, you can put i386.img on e.g. C:\Boot\LTSP\i386.img and use this command line in pxelinux.cfg: APPEND ro initrd=ltsp/i386/initrd.img init=/sbin/init-ltsp root=/dev/sda1 rootflags=ro loop=/Boot/LTSP/i386.img; IPAPPEND 3

09:58
<Hyperbyte>
Diskless clients. :)
10:00
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: you can't decrease the network bandwidth without putting it somewhere else
10:00
So, decide, either more NICs on the server etc, or load balancing (e.g. NFS home elsewhere), or local caching with e.g. usb sticks
10:00
There are some new usb sticks that are extremely fast, ssd-lie
10:00
like
10:01
So, with e.g. 20€/client, you can increase the "virtual disk speed" of the clients 10 times or more
10:02
<Hyperbyte>
Nah, problem isn't NICs on server... problem is I'm having loads of audio streams on my network and they're being bothered by LTSP somehow
10:02
I need to figure out how to seperate this at the physical (switch) level
10:02
But I wondered if there is also trick to get bandwith usage down, even if just a little.
10:03
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: you mean that the bandwidth is enough, and you're having QoS problems?
10:05
(actually, 5€/client should be enough for an 4 or 8 GB USB 3 stick)
10:05
bbl...

alkisg, hrm... logging in to 14.04 LTSP here at the radio station with ltsp-pnp takes a reeeeeally long time. Like half a minute before it shows desktop, if not longer. Doesn't take that long if I log in over plain SSH. Any ideas?
13:53
Just measured. 45 seconds.
13:54
Hrm, looks like logging out and then logging back in is lightning fast.
14:13
Anyone got any ideas how to remove "Power off" from the menu in 14.04?

Hyperbyte: http://www.epoptes.org/documentation/lan-benchmark
15:03
Post the results of that whenever you can
15:03
(I assume fat clients)
15:05
<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, you assume correctly. I will check this later.
15:06
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: about poweroff, you'd need to edit the /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/*.policy files
15:07
./org.freedesktop.login1.policy
15:08
<action id="org.freedesktop.login1.power-off">
15:08
<allow_active>yes</allow_active> => no
15:09
Same for reboot etc
15:15
<Hyperbyte>
Hrm, I'm gonna delay deployment of 14.04 for a bit until I figure this out completely.
15:15
Can you write me a small script that makes these changes to the policies on the fly?
15:16
Just some line that replaces the yes with a no
15:17
<alkisg>
Sorry, too busy (got enough work for the next 20 months or so :D), but you can edit the file, save it as a copy, and put an RCFILE_01="mv symlink to file" lts.conf directive to do that
15:17
<Hyperbyte>
Thing is, I only need to disable shutdown for -some- specific clients from lts.conf. So I need to invoke some script that makes the changes.
15:17
Hrm... I guess that'd work.

seems to be caused by NFS 4? Mounting with NFS 3 takes under a second, NFS 4 takes 16 seconds?

haven't used NFSv4

it is taking exactly the same amount of time mounting the same drive via NFS4 on another machine as the client is hanging for on boot
