Hello. Is there a possibility to make programs run on ltsp server like in the old ltsp or not? Since with the new ltsp everything runs in thinclient it seems that gigabyte brix computers with 4gb ram and gigabyte network is not enough when you use usual programs such as chromium-browser, zoom and etc.
07:17
Even intel nuc with 4gb ram is not enough.
07:17
<alkisg>
What CPU model exactly? grep model /proc/cpuinfo
07:17
To run programs on the ltsp server, you'd use xfreerdp, x2go etc
07:17
vnc...
07:18
But let's see if you have another issue first
07:26
<NecTal>
Intel Nuc has Inter(R) Celeron(R) CPU J3455 @ 1.5GHz.
07:26
<alkisg>
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Celeron+J3455+%40+1.50GHz&id=2875 has score 2278, it should run chromium-browser fine
07:27
Can you boot a live cd / usb stick / local installation, and compare?
07:27
LTSP should perform as fast as a local installation
07:28
<NecTal>
It runs great until you use multiple programs that use a lot of ram. Like chromium-browser with multiple tabs and zoom.
07:28
<alkisg>
If you exhaust RAM, you need to buy more RAM
07:29
<NecTal>
That is one possibility yes.
07:29
<alkisg>
What are your server specs, CPU and RAM?
07:31
<NecTal>
AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor and 16gb of ram.
07:31
<alkisg>
And how many clients?
07:31
<NecTal>
7.
07:32
<alkisg>
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+FX-6300+Six-Core&id=1781 has 4039 score, and with 16 GB RAM it's not something special
07:32
7 clients with 4 GB RAM each => 32 GB RAM, they already have more
07:32
So you wouldn't get any benefit by using remote desktop to the server anyway, it would be worse
07:33
<NecTal>
Okay.
07:33
<alkisg>
So if you need more RAM, just buy more RAM, LTSP can't make Linux need less RAM, it's just using Linux
07:33
7 clients with 4 GB RAM each => 28 GB RAM, they already have more ==> meh I need more coffee, 28 not 32 :D
07:35
<NecTal>
Okay. I will try with more ram. I think 8gb should be safe.
07:35
<alkisg>
Maybe you could even move some from the server to a client
07:35
If they're compatible

07:36
<NecTal>
Right now it seems that server doesn't need as much ram as it use to need.

07:36
<alkisg>
Are you using the server as a client too?
07:36
*for desktop logins
07:36
<NecTal>
No.
07:36
<alkisg>
Then 4 GB should be fine for the server
07:37
<NecTal>
Okay.
07:37
<alkisg>
You could even swap the server disk and put it to a client
07:37
And use your server as a client instead
07:37
The server doesn't need a lot of CPU/RAM
07:38
<NecTal>
Okay.

Hello everyone. I have a problem with LTSP 20.04 chrootless client. I have configured /etc/ltsp/ltsp.conf SCREEN_07=xfreerdp, but it's booting into shell. If i manually do xfreerdp 172.x.x.x from xterm then it works. Any ideas?

if I modify ltsp.conf, do I have to regenerate the image?
12:40
<eu^451222052>
ltsp initrd
12:40
no need to regenerate
12:41
<Teridon>
thx
12:41
<eu^451222052>
*if chrootless
12:43
<Teridon>
I'm... mostly.. chrootless. The gov't makes me separate the partitions (/var, /home,, /var/log, /boot, / (etc...) all on separate partitions)
12:43
so right now I'm making my image with == ltsp image /,,/boot,subdir=boot,,/usr,subdir=usr,,/var,subdir=var
12:44
<eu^451222052>
yeah, then you\re fine with ltsp initrd
12:44
after modding ltsp.conf
12:47
<Teridon>
again, thank you. I'll confirm for anyone reading the logs that running `ltsp initrd` did indeed work (changes to ltsp.conf were indeed applied to the client)

cool, ty
12:56
<alkisg>
Ted334: eerrm, the new LTSP doesn't have SCREEN_x parameters at all
12:58
<Ted334>
okay, ty... but how do i get it to boot right into rdp session?
12:59
<alkisg>
Ted334: it's the same as you'd do it in non-ltsp standalone workstations,
13:00
some methods are described in the wiki, https://github.com/ltsp/community/wiki/Single-guest-session-over-NFS
13:00
There are other pages there too, check for rdp to the menu to the right
13:00
Essentially it's autologin to a custom session
13:01
<Ted334>
oh, thank you alkisg, I'll check it out :)

I just tested lightdm autologin-user in my LIGHTDM_CONF settings, and the client did indeed automatically login as that user. However, it does not mount the user's home directory. I assume this is because it needs the password to do the SSHFS mount(??). Can I somehow set this up with an SSH keypair?
13:33
<alkisg>
Teridon: it's possible to provide the user password in ltsp.conf
13:33
<Teridon>
I see, thanks
13:36
<alkisg>
It's base64-encoded, see the ltsp.conf man page for an example
