<nutron>
ok, where's the best place to set a user environment variable when using ltsp?
00:13
ie, I've been told to enable GCONF_LOCAL_LOCKS=1 per user .. but where do I do that really?

TIMESERVER in lts.conf seems not working in lucid, or do I miss something?
05:01
<alkisg>
AFAIK it's working in Lucid
05:01
Do you need NAT to reach the time server?
05:01
Is your TIMEZONE correct?
05:04
<muppis>
TIMEZONE is set to Europe/Helsinki.
05:06
ntpdate works from client.

I've set TIMEZONE and TIMESERVER in lts.conf, installed ntpdate into the chroot... still the clients refuse to set the timezone specified or update the time. What am I missing? :-)
06:03
This is with LTSP 5.1.95-1 running on Fedora 13 x86_64. ntpdate works fine if I run it manually.
06:18
<muppis>
Hyperbyte, actually I got same problem with Ubuntu Lucid..
06:18
<Hyperbyte>
That's interesting actually.
06:19
<muppis>
Yep.
06:20
<Hyperbyte>
I just moved the set_time code from <chroot>/usr/share/ltsp/ltsp-init-common to a startup script and it works beeeeeautiful.
06:21
So I think I can safely say it's not my fault. :)

<alkisg>
garymc: can you boot your vaio normally and see the layout/
08:16
?
08:16
Then just use that value for XKBLAYOUT
08:16
(normally == I mean with a live cd or something)
08:16
<garymc>
how would i do that? I can boot the viao into windows xp if thats what you mean
08:17
<markit>
garymc: lol
08:17
<garymc>
where would i see the layout in XP?
08:17
ahh come on ... im a little slow on these matters
08:18
<markit>
garymc: use a real OS, download and burn a CD with a Live distro, like ubuntu/kubuntu (if you use ubuntu/kubuntu as ltsp server)
08:19
then boot from cd, is usually a startup option of the bios (like press F12)
08:19
or an option if you change boot priority in the bios setup
08:19
<garymc>
well i boot the viao from ethernet
08:19
ethernet is linked to LTSP server
08:20
<markit>
garymc: when you boot from ethernet, you boot to ltsp server, but to troubleshooting alkisg is asking you to boot from a "regular local OS"
08:20
and grab the value of the XKBLAYOUT (we will have to ask alkisg how to obtain it, since I don't know either)
08:20
<garymc>
ok, so i need to burn a cd and boot from that?
08:20
would i have to install it to the hard drive?
08:20
<markit>
garymc: exactly
08:20
NO
08:20
<alkisg>
garymc: "my keybord doesnt work on my sony vaio when i log into ltsp via ethernet" ==> I thought that meant that it worked locally, but you meant in windows XP
08:21
<markit>
garymc: live cd are intended also NOT to be installed, but simply booted and enjoided without affecting your HD
08:21
<alkisg>
garymc: so, the problem is that you don't know how to select the correct keyboard layout for your vaio in gnome?
08:21
<garymc>
it works when im using it in windows
08:21
<alkisg>
Or do you think it's an LTSP problem?
08:21
<garymc>
yes i think so
08:21
<alkisg>
Linux problem or LTSP problem?
08:21
<garymc>
possibly either one
08:21
<alkisg>
OK, so what I'm saying is, "narrow it down"
08:22
Boot with a live CD or a live usb stick, so no LTSP there
08:22
If it works there, see the layout you use
08:22
If it doesn't, then it isn't an LTSP problem
08:22
So you need to ask in #ubuntu or your distro channel
08:22
<garymc>
about a live version on usb stick?
08:22
<markit>
alkisg: how can you tell what layout you are using? is a global environment variable set?
08:23
<alkisg>
markit: one way to see it is from the gnome keyboard applet
08:23
<markit>
garymc: there is a windows program also, AFAIK, that lets you create a "booting usb stick" from a .iso, so no need to burn a cd, if your vaio is able to boot from usb, of course
08:24
<garymc>
hmmmmm
08:24zz_evil_root is now known as evil_root
08:24
<garymc>
could i just go through all the layouts in ltsp?
08:25
<markit>
garymc: I think so, but alkisg is the guru here
08:27
<garymc>
alkisg could i just try every layout till it worked?
08:30
<markit>
is only a matter of time wasted or not, try , you will not damage ltsp server
08:31
garymc: in any case GNU/Linux is far better than XP, it respects your freedoms, worth a try, so you'd better have a usb live in any case
08:32
(I do love KDE as desktop environment, but Gnome is very popular as well, so is your choice, use a Kubuntu or Ubuntu iso)

08:32* markit has no M$Windows installed in any of his home PC, and feels much much better
08:32
<alkisg>
garymc: I thought you already had an ubuntu.iso from when you installed your ltsp server, but sure, you can also try from ltsp
08:32
garymc: boot in XP, run "intl.cpl" and see the layout
08:32
Then you can select a similar one in linux
08:33
garymc: all this: not related to #ltsp :)
08:35
<garymc>
ok, alkisg that just shows regional settings. no layout stuff etc
08:36
but i did start going through differnet layouts in ltsp and the Y U I O stay as 1 2 3 4
08:36
no matter what one i selected

I am attempting to test LTSP with Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 2. Updated this morning. I am seeing the following error:
08:42
<Gadi>
garymc: num_lock?
08:42
<_UsUrPeR_>
request_module: runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c
08:42
anybody have any ideas?
08:42
never seen this before...
08:43
that error occurs on boot
08:43
<garymc>
no there isnt a number pad on the right of the keyboard as it is a laptop
08:43
<Gadi>
garymc: many laptops use the regular keys as number pad
08:44
Im sure you will find a numlock if you look
08:44
<garymc>
ok i will check now
08:45
yes there is
08:45
<_UsUrPeR_>
gadi: any ideas about this error in 11.04 A2?
08:45
<garymc>
let me test
08:46
<Gadi>
_UsUrPeR_: Im no expert, but I would deduce that you have a runaway loop, say of the modprobe binfmt-464c persuasion
08:46
<_UsUrPeR_>
lol ok thanks :)

12:29
<ogra>
alkisg, because of telepathy
12:30
<alkisg>
Erm. I don't think there are any telepathy phones though :)
12:30
<abeehc>
must be a bit of both the fact no one used ekiga and there's another sip stack by default
12:31
<alkisg>
And unfortunately empathy still isn't good enough for anything
12:31
<abeehc>
but yeah i don't see any clients
12:31
<ogra>
telepathy has a sip module
12:31
telepathy-sofiasip
12:32
<alkisg>
And empathy works OK with it?
12:32
<abeehc>
hmm it looks like it would work
12:32
<ogra>
alkisg, no idea, never used sip but afaik it is used by default on the n900 so i would guess it works
12:33
<alkisg>
Sounds good
12:33
<abeehc>
i'm gonna try
12:33
ekiga certainly wasn't broken
12:33
<ogra>
its still available
12:33
just install it
12:33
<alkisg>
Right I thought it was removed because it was undermaintained, but its git shows it's actively developed
12:34
<abeehc>
that's sorta what i meant
12:34
<ogra>
no, it was removed because telepathy and empathy went in
12:35
<abeehc>
for sure makes good sense
12:35
i don't know what im doin.. added a sip acct into the applet...hehe
12:36
ah the client..

About the whole softphone discussion, I've become quite interested in www.sflphone.org myself recently
14:06
It's more focused on business usage, and it needs some work still in that area, but I think it's very promising.
