_UsUrPeR_: I tried fat clients in 12.04 yesterday, it seemed to work fine
17:05
<_UsUrPeR_>
alkisg: yeah, I'm seeing that too
17:05
not a fat client, but getting it working
17:05
alkisg: I need some advise about how to go about this
17:05
I would really like to fix the LVCD issue in 12.04
17:05
<alkisg>
Shoot, though my connection is a bit unstable
17:05
<_UsUrPeR_>
err LVDS issue
17:05
<alkisg>
The one with intel cards?
17:05
<_UsUrPeR_>
yes
17:06
perhaps an addition to ltsp-build-image --ignore-lvds or something?
17:06
<alkisg>
And your script no longer works? Or you need a better workaround?
17:06
<_UsUrPeR_>
no, the script works, but it is beginning to look ugly when we have to send it to every customer. It would be great if we could get a fix integrated before 12.04 is set in stone.
17:07
<alkisg>
Why not always put it there, as a module option?
17:07
Hm. One way around that is to use a PPA, and tell all your customers to use your ppa, where you can include any patches you want,
17:07
the other is to convince some package maintainers to include it...
17:08
The correct package for it would be xorg?
17:08
<_UsUrPeR_>
who are those people? I have these gold bars I don't need any more :)
17:08
<alkisg>
Hehe
17:08
You know the ltsp maintainers per distro, right?
17:08* alkisg isn't one of them... fortunately :D
17:08
<_UsUrPeR_>
who is?
17:09
I mean, I can put a bug in pertaining to this, but we tried that with 11.10
17:09
<alkisg>
The bug report would be "invalid" for LTSP
17:10
But maybe some maintainer can put it there as a quick fix until xorg itself fixes it
17:10
Dunno, it's up to the maintainers to decie
17:10
decide
17:10
<_UsUrPeR_>
ok, cool.
17:11
<alkisg>
_UsUrPeR_: if you put it as a module option, or as a xorg.d snippet, it wouldn't need to be a script, so it could be installed at all times, even on hardware that doesn't have the problem
17:12
<_UsUrPeR_>
gotcha

hi
18:49
using ltsp on 11.10, what desktop environment would the clients use by default?
18:49
<vagrantc>
probably unity, for better or worse
18:49
<jason00>
can I default it to xfce somehow?
18:50
I'm trying to log into a client for the first time and I just have a background image. nothing more and its been about 5 minutes. :(
18:52
<vagrantc>
maybe: sudo upate-alternatives --config x-session-manager
18:52
i *think* that will change it for all cases (including non-thin clients if you have local logins on the server)
18:52
at least, that would work on debian, not sure how ubuntu works.
18:53
<jason00>
vagrantc: I'm not sure I follow. If I run that command would it give me the option to choose which DE to use?
18:53
<vagrantc>
jason00: i think so
18:53
<jason00>
drat
18:53
there is only one alternative. nothing to configure.
18:54
<vagrantc>
probably need to also install the other alternatives
18:54
<jason00>
I have gnome shell installed. I was going to test it with gnome classic that comes with gnome shell.
18:54
<vagrantc>
i think ubuntu killed off gnome-classis
18:54
gnome-classic
18:54
<jason00>
ubuntu did
18:54
gnome did not
18:54
gnome classic comes with gnome shell
18:54
I installed gnome shell
18:55
<vagrantc>
ah, well ... good luck :)
18:55
<jason00>
erm
18:55
so there's uh
18:55
no way to make LTSP use a certain DE?
18:55
<vagrantc>
there are many ways, but it sounds like you're trying to do something ubuntu doesn't really support
18:55
<jason00>
uh
18:55
no, I'm not...
18:56
I just want to use a different DE.
18:56
It works absolutely fine on the server. Why can I not make LTSP clients use it?
18:56
<vagrantc>
so install a different desktop
18:56
<jason00>
..

Hello
18:57
<jason00>
Am I not making sense?
18:57
Does this thereby mean LTSP with Ubuntu from 11.10 is useless?
18:57
This makes no sense to me.
18:57
<makayabou>
Is the option --fat-client only available for Ubuntu? I'm using debian..
18:57
<vagrantc>
jason00: i'm not familiar enough with ubuntu to know what recent things they've done ... in the past changing the x-session-manager should allow you to select a different environment, if it's installed.

vagrantc: are you suggesting if I change the default DE at the Ubuntu level, LTSP follows suit?
18:58
<vagrantc>
jason00: depending on how you install it, if the packages support it, etc.
18:58
jason00: yup.
18:58
<jason00>
vagrantc: oh, well thats all I needed. I remember doing that with gnome shell.
18:58
I'm sure I can figure it out from here. I thought LTSP needed specific configs in lts.conf or something.
18:59
<vagrantc>
you can use those too.
18:59
like i said, there are many ways to do it.
19:00
although there were bugs in some versions of LDM that ubuntu shipped that broke support for the LDM_SESSION variable
19:03

<alkisg>
LTSP clients don't use lightdm
19:10
<jason00>
is GDM still present in 11.10?
19:10
<alkisg>
They use LDM, the ltsp display manager
19:10
<jason00>
can it be configured to utilize gnome classic, xfce, or whatever I choose as the default DE for the clients then?
19:10
<alkisg>
I don't know how that relates to the lightdm defaults, I've seen a relevant bug report in launchpad for lightdm-set-defaults but I haven't read it
19:11
You can select a session from the LDM menu
19:11
If you find one that works, *then* you can start trying to set it as the default
19:11
If not, you may want to look at other things, disabling compiz etc
19:12
<jason00>
gnome classic works
19:12
sweet
19:12
is it easy to default it?
19:12
<alkisg>
LDM_XSESSION or LDM_SESSION, don't remember which of them, see the man page
19:12
!lts.conf
19:12
<ltsp>
alkisg: lts.conf: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/lts.conf
19:14
<vagrantc>
don't mess with LDM_XSESSION!
19:14
<jason00>
thanks. I was actually looking through it a few minutes ago.
19:15
vagrantc: I assume LDM_XSESSION is the flag alkisg was intending me to find?
19:15
Or were you just saying to make sure I avoid it?
19:15
<vagrantc>
use LDM_SESION, *not* LDM_XSESSION ...
19:15
er, LDM_SESSION
19:15
<jason00>
ah, k
19:16
LDM_SESSION=gnome-classic
19:16
yummy
19:17
<alkisg>
/usr/share/xsessions should have a list of the available sessions.
19:17* alkisg finds the LDM_SESSION, LDM_XSESSION and xsessions dir names too similar to remember which does what
19:18
<jason00>
so whatever I find in /usr/share/xsessions I can plug into lts.conf as LDM_SESSION?
19:19
<alkisg>
I think so
19:19
<jason00>
k, time to test it out
19:19
<ogra_>
make LDM_SESSION just LDM_DESKTOP_SESSION
19:20
<jason00>
is there a big difference?
19:20
<alkisg>
ogra_: nah, vagrantc will force us to keep the old name for compatibility for 1-2 decades :P
19:20
<ogra_>
one is easier to distinguish (that was a developer suggestion, not a support one)
19:20
alkisg, lol
19:20
he still does that ?
19:20
<jason00>
desktop session makes more sense to me as a user *shrug*
19:20
<ogra_>
:)
19:21
<alkisg>
Hehe
19:21
<ogra_>
jason00, right, thats why i proposed it
19:21
<jason00>
ogra_: +1
19:21
<ogra_>
seems it recently started to cause confusion ... iirc there is also a mail thread
19:22
<jason00>
well, no dice here
19:22
I tried LDM_SESSION=gnome-classic and gnome-classic.desktop (as seen in /usr/share/xsessions)
19:22
both yielded an error when I tried to log in saying it was going to default
19:22
<ogra_>
rather take the Exec line from the .desktop file
19:23
<jason00>
pardon?
19:23
<ogra_>
look inside the .desktop files in that dir
19:23
<alkisg>
There was also a bug about LDM_SESSION not working for 1-2 ubuntu versions, it was solved but I don't know if the fix is present in 11.10 or not
19:23
<ogra_>
they all have an Exec line in there
19:23
<jason00>
ogra_: gotcha. let me try that.

ogra_: it just loops back
19:25
I log in and returns to login screen
19:25
<ogra_>
hmm, did you put quotes aroud the command ?
19:25
iirc they all have options so proper quoting is in order
19:26
<jason00>
LDM_SESSION=gnome-session --session=gnome-classic
19:26
is how it looks
19:26
its the exact exec= line in the desktop file
19:26
need quotes around gnome-session --session=gnome-classic?
19:26
LDM_SESSION="gnome-session --session=gnome-classic"
19:27* ogra_ would try that, yep
19:27
<alkisg>
!classic-gnome
19:27
<ltsp>
alkisg: classic-gnome: To set classic-gnome as the default session instead of Unity in Ubuntu >= 11.04, put LDM_XSESSION="gnome-session --session=classic-gnome" in lts.conf
19:27
<ogra_>
haha
19:27
<jason00>
not gnome-classic
19:27
hm?
19:27
classic-gnome
19:28
<ogra_>
well, better take whats in the .desktop file, since thats what your system would execute
19:28
the above claims its for 11.04
19:28
<jason00>
it looped with quotes
19:28
>.<
19:28
<ogra_>
was that an upgraded system ?
19:29
<jason00>
fresh install
19:29
<ogra_>
or a plain 11.10 install
19:29
<jason00>
yep
19:29
<ogra_>
did you install the gnome stuff ?
19:29
its not there by default
19:29
<jason00>
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell (gnome-classic comes with gnome-shell)
19:29
gnome-classic is the default fallback if gnome-shell isn't on 3d supported hardware.
19:29
<ogra_>
and classic is completely gone i think, it should be the gnome-fallback
19:29
<jason00>
but a lot of users use gnome-classic as their main
19:30
classic is gone thanks to ubuntu with unity 3d vs unity 2d (2d being fallback)
19:30
gnome-classic is still gnome's fallback to gnome-shell
19:30
but like I said, you can use gnome-classic as much as you want, just as you can unity 2d
19:30
<ogra_>
ogra@horus:~$ grep -i ^exec /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-fallback.desktop
19:30
Exec=gnome-session --session=gnome-fallback
19:30
try that one
19:31
<jason00>
hm
19:31
I now see I have gnome-fallback in xsessions
19:31
as well as gnome-classic
19:31alkisg has left IRC (alkisg!~alkisg@ubuntu/member/alkisg, Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
19:31
<jason00>
still looped
19:31
:/
19:31
<ogra_>
right
19:32
check ~/.xsession-errors in the users home
19:34
<jason00>
hm
19:35
I see it routing from gnome-classic to default, because it cannot find gnome-classic
19:35
what about fallback...
19:35* vagrantc isn't opposed to LDM_DESKTOP_SESSION, as long as compatibility is implemented (and it trivial to do so)
19:36
<jason00>
not seeing much about fallback
19:36
<ogra_>
anything related to gnome-session ?
19:37
i dont think it writes anything about the mode, just tries to start its bits
19:37
<jason00>
nothing relevant about gnome-session from what I see
19:37
the biggest thing was gnome-classic

19:45
<jason00>
well, that kind of sucks
19:45
I'm not seeing much of anything
19:47
<ogra_>
if you try unity-2d ? does that come up ?
19:47
well, should be =ubuntu-2d iirc
19:50
<jason00>
ubuntu-2d not found, falling back to default
19:51
<ogra_>
wow
19:53
<jason00>
is this a lost cause?
19:53
I mean, unity and gnome 3 on thin clients just doesn't make that much sense
19:53
xfce or lxde or something would be the sweet spot
19:53
<ogra_>
no idea, that used to work in the past
19:53
but gnome changed a lot
19:53
<jason00>
if we can't change the default environment...
19:54
trying to figure out how to say it without sounding like a terrible person...
19:54
<ogra_>
might be that gnome-session looks via dbus what the valid sessions are or other weird stuff
19:54
<jason00>
I just don't know how usable ltsp will be for us if we cannot control what environment we are to use.
19:54
<ogra_>
you surely can somehow but the old ways dont seem to work anymore
19:55
<jason00>
I can only hope it'll be fixed in the future. especially with the next ubuntu being an LTS
19:55
<ogra_>
aha, ubuntu-2d is defined in gconf
19:56
and in /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/ubuntu-2d.session
19:56
<jason00>
what does that mean essentially?
19:56
<ogra_>
nothing at all
19:56
<jason00>
sigh
19:57
<ogra_>
read up about how gnome-session was changed between 2 and 3 and make sure to fulfill the requirements
19:57
usually gnome upstream is pretty good at documenting such stuff

I am able to log on to the box directly with domain creds. I have a virtual machine setup in the Windows DHCP to PXE boot, and it is coming up to the Ubuntu login screen. I cannot get any users to login from there however. It goes to verifying password, then hangs, and finally says it ca
