<Hyperbyte>
Hey alkisg! Did I read correctly and has the new LTSP abandoned nbd completely in favour of nfs?

<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: correct
14:51
NFS is much faster and stable
15:09
You can even reboot the server now, and have the clients continue normally after the server comes back
15:12
<fiesh>
I thought it was nbd-over-nfs?!
15:13
but I guess it's not really nbd any more but just a squashfs image or so
15:20
<alkisg>
fiesh: right, nbd-over-nfs doesn't make much sense; it's squashfs-over-nfs
15:20
Or chroot-over-nfs, this is supported as well

15:26mgariepy has joined IRC (mgariepy!~mgariepy@ubuntu/member/mgariepy)
15:30
<fiesh>
right, but just calling it nfs was misleading to me since we don't have to actually mount the nfs as the root device
15:30
but rather use an image served over nfs
15:30
which is much better
15:31
that's what I meant

15:56
<alkisg>
Well, "root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=server:/srv/ltsp" in both cases, chroot or image; it's just that ltsp loop-mounts the image in ltsp-bottom, if ltsp.image=images/image.img is specified...
15:58
<fiesh>
oh I see
15:58
so technically it's an NFS based root ;)

<nikoh77>
alkisg, can i have a multi architecture environment (client side) like Raspberry Pi and amd64 with same home's structure and same configuration files (server side).
18:09
<alkisg>
nikoh77: sure
18:10
<nikoh77>
ok, i must have just the kernel image to each arc, right?
18:11
<alkisg>
A different chroot / image for each arch
18:12
<nikoh77>
yes but i can syslink amd64 homes (for example) on rpi chroot?
18:12
to share data?
18:16
not entirely i think because application config and data files may not be perfectly the same.... right?
18:17
<fiesh>
depends on the aplication
18:17
application
18:18
at least they're both little endian, so chances are there won't be too many issues
18:19
<nikoh77>
yes i know, but there is a risk.... ok got it. Thanks
18:20
<fiesh>
text files will be fine, binary files depend on the exact format
18:20
but I wouldn't expect say browser cache data to necessarily be cross-platform -- it's meant to be fast, not sacrifice speed for portability
18:55woernie has left IRC (woernie!~werner@p5DDEC5BE.dip0.t-ipconnect.de, Remote host closed the connection)
18:57
<alkisg>
nikoh77: /home is served via sshfs
18:57
It's not per-chroot, its' per-server
18:57
I.e. it will work in all arches, without symlinks, automatically
18:58
Home is cross platform, it doesn't have issues on different arches
