<unsk1ll3d>
hi @ all
04:03
<lzap_>
BlueRaid: what exactly do I have to set? I have added LOCAL_DEVICE_0X to the configuration but no change
04:04
<BlueRaid>
you must add to the autosart from kde lbussd
04:04
Bhaskar: what distri?
04:04
<Bhaskar>
BlueRaid, k12ltsp
04:07
BlueRaid, in lts.conf sound=y,sound_daemon="esd", volume =75 i have set
04:07
<BlueRaid>
you use kde?
04:07
<Bhaskar>
BlueRaid, but volume is disable in client?
04:08
<BlueRaid>
lzap_: what distri?
04:09
Bhaskar: Use you KDE?
04:10
<unsk1ll3d>
Bhaskar - using a graphical interface, hugh? like KDE, Gnome, XFCE?
04:11
<Bhaskar>
BlueRaid, in KDE in client, does not play sound
04:12
<unsk1ll3d>
does lsof /dev/dsp show any remaining processes?
04:13
<Bhaskar>
unsk1ll3d, how to check it?
04:14
unsk1ll3d, there is dsp in /dev
04:14
<unsk1ll3d>
lsof shows the processes, which uses the device at the moment
04:14
<lzap_>
BlueRaid: Mandriva 2006 :-(
04:14
<BlueRaid>
Bhaskar: install mplayer
04:14
<unsk1ll3d>
so you can check if e.g. the harddisk is used or the CD is mounted
04:14
<BlueRaid>
lzap_: why :-( ?
04:14
<lzap_>
BlueRaid: its our client, I cannot change distro...
04:15
<Bhaskar>
BlueRaid, i have real player 10
04:15
<lzap_>
BlueRaid: I must use the statically linked version of the tools
04:15
<BlueRaid>
Bhaskar: you must install mplayer!
04:15
lzap_: and your server?
04:16
<lzap_>
BlueRaid: ?
04:16
<BlueRaid>
yes?
04:16
<unsk1ll3d>
Bhaskar - Terminal -> enter "lsof /dev/dsp"

<lzap_>
BlueRaid: my server?
04:16
BlueRaid: its Mandriva 2006
04:16

unsk1ll3d, in client terminal or server terminal
04:17
<lzap_>
I dont have lbuscd in my distro
04:18
<unsk1ll3d>

04:18
sorry
04:19
<BlueRaid>
lzap_: then you must install it on the server! show at

04:19

BlueRaid: I have installed it alreaady!
04:20
theres no binary called lbuscd
04:20
only lbussd!
04:20
<BlueRaid>
yes i mean that ;-)
04:20
<lzap_>
(in the FAQ there is: ps ef | grep lbuscd but I dont have this binary so I cannot find it of course)
04:21
<BlueRaid>
cd /usr/kde/3.x/env/
04:21
ln -s /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/lbus-start.sh .
04:21

04:21
Bhaskar: you imusst creat a skript
04:21

04:22
<lzap_>
i dont have /usr/kde :-(
04:22

04:24
<BlueRaid>
Do you have root access on the server?

there is no "env" directory on the server
04:28

it's about xkb, when it's set to us, it is ok but when i try to change it to pl i'm unable to login
04:28
i'm running Xubuntu 7.04

04:29
have you configured the devices
04:29
killsalad: go on a local shell, do you have ther pl ?
04:30
<lzap_>
LOCAL_DEVICE_01 = /dev/hdc:cdrom etc --- yes
04:30
<ogra>
killsalad, why dont you use ltsp5 in xubuntu its completely localized ?

ogra, volume control in client is disable and i can not play music in client , so what should i do?
06:21
ogra, i have k12ltsp
06:23
<ogra>
Bhaskar, no idea, follow the wiki ? i only work on ltsp5 stuff which is totally different from the 4.2 k12ltsp ships
06:24
there should be enough hints how to debug it on wiki.ltsp.org
06:24
<Bhaskar>
BlueRaid, i have install mplayer but still problem volume control is disable in client and could not hear sound?
06:25
<BlueRaid>
make a skrpt:
06:26
<ogra>
there is no way to do volume control with netwroed esd btw ... dont put effort into it ... adjust the volume on the speakers
06:26
<Bhaskar>
skrpt
06:26
<ogra>
(esd is what ltsp 4.2 uses)
06:27
<Bhaskar>
ogra, ya, but i could not play sound in client speaket?
06:27
<ogra>
thats unrelated
06:27
<Bhaskar>
ogra, i have enabled esd
06:27
<ogra>
i just wanted to tell you, dont hope to get volume control working :)
06:27
<Bhaskar>
ogra, ok
06:28
<ogra>
(it works with ltsp5 and pulseaudio btw)
06:30
<Bhaskar>
ogra, ok
06:31
ogra, how to shutdown client ? there is also problem
06:33
<ogra>
press the power button ?
06:33
<Bhaskar>
ogra, any other method ?
06:34
eg.alt+ctrl+bkspace for logout
06:35
<ogra>
well, ldm (the login manager of ltsp5) has a shutdown button ... no idea how you should do it in 4.2 apart from holing down the power button
06:36
<Bhaskar>
ogra, ok
06:36
ltsp5 is bundled in fedora6 as k12ltsp or not?
06:37
<ogra>
ltsp5 isnt in any redhat based distros yet, you can try to use the tarball though ...but without guarantees
06:38
or use one of ubuntu/edubuntu/xubuntu/debian
06:39
<Bhaskar>
ogra, can i find rpm package for ltsp5?
06:39
<ogra>
no
06:39
there is no such thing like *a package* anymore
06:39
<Bhaskar>
ogra, i think it is for .deb , ya
06:39
<ogra>
thats what ltsp5 is about, it is built from distro packages
06:39
<Bhaskar>
ogra, ok
06:40
<ogra>
no, the ltsp5 implementation is about implementing it *directly* in the distro ...
06:40
so no .deb or .rpm ... but a set of scripts using the distros tools to build ltsp
06:40
from the distro packages
06:40
<Bhaskar>
ogra, so i can't implement ltsp5 in fedora core 5 yet
06:40
<ogra>
you can use the tarbals
06:40
*tarballs
06:41
look at the wiki
06:41
<Bhaskar>
ok

08:03

wow

i also already have a plan for the error messages ... so ldm in feisty+1 should be a *lot* better
08:04
<lzap_>
when I insert CDROM on the terminal, does terminal`s kernel automount it to /tmp/drives or not?
08:04
<ogra>
i'll add a --low-ressources switch that turns it inot a plain gtk input field on black bg
08:04
that should help with things like the e2300

so i spent easter writing a new greeter :)
08:05

do I know that feeling? That's my life
08:06
<ogra>
btw, the speed can still get improved ... i'm currently loading the gnome icon theme (saves translation work)
08:07
if we ship our own icons and translations i can drop half of the deps
08:07
oh, and the new greeter is fully translateable aleready .... unlike the old one :)

you can run ltspfsd with the -d option

i wanted to know what a fuse *daemon* should be :)
09:36
(a *daemone would defeat the purpose of a *userspace* system ;) )

its a daemon

look at FUSE homepage "how it works"
09:37

whats a daemon ?
09:38
<lzap_>
ltspfs
09:38
<ogra>
no

only ltspfsd is a daemon

09:39

"a fuse daemon" is very confusing

at least for me as developer
09:40
<lzap_>
well "userspace program" that runs in the background
09:40
if you want...
09:40
but this is a daemon I think...
09:40
<ogra>
haasd, drop the SCREEN* line from /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf
09:41
lzap_, ltspfsd is a daemon, ltspfs is only a mount wrapper ...
09:41
ltspfsd runs as root on the client and usually provides a fuse mountpoint over the network to ltspfs ...
09:42
in the old 4.2 you needed Xuth set properly as well as correct DNS setup
09:42
in ltsp5 its using the existing ssh tunnel for authentication
09:42
if you use 4.2 check that the X authentication is ok
09:42
<haasd>
ogra- thats how you re-enable the graphical logon to the main server itself?

I was assuming it was disabled somewhere in gdm.conf or something like that.
10:00
<ogra>
well if you use ltsp 4.2 you will use xdmcp, which means that usually all clients connect to the same gdm on the server
10:00
so the gdm.conf would change it for all of them
10:00
the only place to do something on a per client base is lts.conf
10:01
<haasd>
right- but I am only talking about the console itself. During the install there is the choice to disable the graphical install on the console- I can't imagine why the lts.conf would affect the console since it isn't connecting through xdmcp
10:02sepski has joined #ltsp

<ogra>
hmm, right
10:03SBNet has joined #ltsp
10:03
<haasd>
in ltspcfg its the disable_console_x but I am having trouble figuring out what it does
10:03
<jammcq>
it prevents the Xserver from launching on the console of the server
10:04
basically, it comments out the line that says '0=Standard'
10:04
<ogra>
where is that ?
10:04
<jammcq>
in the gdm.conf file
10:04
<ogra>
ah
10:04
<jammcq>
dunno where it would be in the new gdm.conf files tho
10:04
<haasd>
in the gdm.conf? hmmm.. that is uncommented. I guess the problem is somewhere else. Thanks guys.
10:05
<ogra>
jammcq, surely not in gdm.conf :) rather in gdm.conf-custom
10:10
<jammcq>
ogra: how can you UN-DO something in gdm.conf-custom ?
10:10
it's set in gdm.conf
10:10
because distros assume that if you want to run GDM, then you must also want to have X on the console
10:10
they don't think of GDM as a service
10:10
<ogra>
gdm.conf is overwritten on every upgarde
10:11
<jammcq>
then it's a bug
10:11
<ogra>
so your change is lost
10:11
no
10:11
<jammcq>
the way to NOT run an xserver is to comment out that line. Commenting out the line in gdm.conf-custom doesn't do anything
10:12
<ogra>
head /etc/gdm.conf ->
10:12
<jammcq>
there should be a way to run GDM, without launching a local Xserver
10:12
<ogra>
# values specified in this file. This GDM System Defaults Configuration file

is ltspfsd spawned from initd or how? I have killed the process and run it with -d flag but it finished after first session
10:25

oh, wait

thats indeed only for ltsp5
10:26
the old cvs for ltspfs on 4..2 must be on the ltsp.org page anywhere ...

search the ltsp wiki for ltspfs
10:26* vagrantc was thinking ltspfsd sshould be spawned from init
10:26
<ogra>

thats to early
10:27* ogra doesnt want anything that eats ressources started before ldm anymore
10:27

<vagrantc>
sure
10:27
<ogra>
i start all ltspfs stuff in ubuntu after ldm now ...
10:27
works fine and speeds up the boot by ~3-5 secs
10:28
on slow cients surely even more
10:28* vagrantc wants to remove as much of the ltspfs code from the ltsp scripts as possible and put it into the ltspfs* packages
10:28
<SBNet>
since ltsp can handle client side usb drives and cdroms, can it handle client side sound? like the client does something, can they hear a sound?

10:30
<SBNet>
i'll check out the wiki
10:32
<lzap_>
ldm?
10:33
<ogra>
lzap_, the login manager we use by default in ltsp5
10:33
<lzap_>
hmmm nice
10:34
looks good? :-)
10:34
<ogra>
well ... what shall i say, i'm biased :)
10:34
<- wrote it
10:34
<lzap_>
I mean the face, not the code :-D
10:34
<ogra>
vagrantc, https://code.launchpad.net/~ogra/ltsp/ldm-greeter btw ...
10:35
<lzap_>
the code is lovely of course
10:35
<ogra>
thats what i did on easter :)
10:35
<lzap_>
hehe
10:35* vagrantc was chopping down trees while etch was released
10:35
<ogra>
400 lines and nearly done (only the lang and session selector connection to ldminfod is missing ...)
10:36
<vagrantc>
total rewrite?
10:36
<ogra>
8 seconds during boot ... 6 seconds for re-login
10:36
total rewrite in C ...
10:36
<lzap_>
xdm is not good for this?
10:36
we do use xdm
10:36
<ogra>
the code isnt cleand up yet or improved for speed though
10:36
no
10:36
xdm doesnt do ssh tunnels :)
10:36
as gdm or kdm dont do that ...
10:37
<lzap_>
so ldm = safer logins
10:37
<ogra>
thats the reason for ldm to exist :)
10:37
no
10:37
ltsp5 = ssh based
10:37
no need for an xeserver on the server anymore ... and no screenshots taken from tcpdump anymore :)
10:38
<lzap_>
is there some alfa version avaiable with good localdev support? I am trying to get LTSPFS working on Mandriva 2006 and I am stucked... no progress for 3 days
10:38
<Lumiere>
ogra: how do clients securely start up the ssh connections?
10:38
<ogra>
(yes you can produce screenshots via tcpdum on an xdmcp connection)
10:38
<lzap_>
alfa version of LTSPv5
10:39
<ogra>
?
10:39
alfa ?
10:39
<lzap_>
alpha... beta
10:39

we didnt really announce a release, since per definition ltsp5 is up to the distro not to ltsp.org
10:40
vagrantc, oh ?
10:40
what do you get ?
10:40
<vagrantc>
ogra: yeah, it bombs out.
10:40
ogra: tasty python tracebacks ...
10:41
<ogra>
meh
10:41
do you have an old bzr version again ?
10:41
i'm just trying to bzr get
10:41
ogra@edubuntu:~/bastel$ bzr get http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ogra/ltsp/ldm-greeter
10:41
Branched 1 revision(s).
10:42
works fine for me
10:42
<vagrantc>
bzr 0.11-1.1
10:42
<ogra>
ogra@edubuntu:~/bastel$ dpkg -l bzr
10:42
<vagrantc>
so, yeah, a little old.
10:42
<ogra>
ii bzr 0.15~rc2-0ubuntu1 Bazaar, the next-generation distributed version control system
10:42
well
10:42
quite so
10:42* vagrantc is weary of unstable vcs's
10:42
<ogra>
i created the branch yesterday with 0.15
10:43
<vagrantc>
i really, really like bzr, but the continual backwards incompatibility is a major drawback.
10:43
<lzap_>
how to debug ltspfs? :-( I really need to find a solution of "Transport endpoint is not connected" error...
10:43
<ogra>
well ...
10:44
there might be a feature to retain backwards compatibility i missed during branch creation or something, might be my fault, not sure
10:45
<vagrantc>
ogra: what's in your .bzr/branch-format ?
10:45
<ogra>
i'm not creating new public branches very often
10:45
Bazaar-NG meta directory, format 1
10:47
<vagrantc>
if there really is an incompatibility, that should contain something else ... maybe it's a bug in bzr.
10:47
<ogra>
or python ?
10:47
got paramiko up to date ?
10:47* vagrantc examines the traceback more closely

10:55

i totally missed it
10:56* vagrantc was beginning to wonder

10:57
<vagrantc>
ogra: so the C greeter is a huge speed improvement?
10:57
<ogra>
no, not a *huge* one
10:57
but its in the realm where gdm/kdm play now
10:57
<vagrantc>
via xdmcp ?
10:57
<ogra>
not signoficantly or noticeable slower
10:57
no
10:58
speed wise :)
10:58
i wont add xdmcp to ldm, lol
10:58
<vagrantc>
no, no. but comparable to kdm/gdm via xdmcp (startx, in ltsp terms)
10:58
<ogra>
6 seconds on my T150
10:58
from logout to having the screen back and usable
10:59* vagrantc has no comparison
10:59
<ogra>
dunno how fast gdm is ... i think about 3 secs
10:59
<vagrantc>
how slow was ldm ?
10:59
<ogra>
before the font dropping i did recently it was around 23 secs
10:59
during the whole feisty development ...
11:00
in edgy its around 12secs
11:00
<vagrantc>
6 is a cosiderable improvement, then
11:00
<ogra>
or a bit more ... i dont have the exact numbers here
11:00
yeah
11:00
& is fine and i think we could get to 3 if we tried hard
11:00
s/\&/6/
11:01
but after that thing is done i want to concentrate on other areas
11:01
for speedups
11:01
<cliebow_>
ogra: i didnt realize gtk was so handy from c..
11:01
<ogra>
gaining 3 secs is nice but we have other areas weher we can do more
11:01
<vagrantc>
yeah, diminishing returns
11:01
<ogra>
it is ... gtk is quite cool
11:02
i think we'll work on a kernel package
11:02
and i want to revisit the debconf stuff in ltsp-client-setup
11:02
the module loading and the configuration of the client are the two big slowdowns we have
11:02* vagrantc wonders if cdebconf is ready

11:15
<ogra>
there is a ./compile.sh
11:15
after compiling you can run the greeter by running ./greeter in the source dir ...
11:15
if you want to play with it in real life, you need to adjust the paths of the png's inteh code
11:20
<joebaker>
Ogra: I just saw you were involved with gnome-screensaver. I havn't reported this bug, but it might be worth checking out for Feisty. We have an old Mandriva LDAP server with the posix schema, our Edgy LTSP server authenticates against ldap with XDMCP just fine with the normal PAM hooks. However gnome-screensaver doesn't let users back into their desktops if they lock their desktops.
11:21
<ogra>
i think it does ... it just takes some hours since it crawls the complete database or something ... tere is an upstream bug at gnome.org about that
11:27
<joebaker>
Bug 64301 Seems to be the one about Gnome-screensaver not being able to unlock using LDAP. I'll read the bug report
11:30
<ogra>
yeah
11:30
i think its still in progress ... even though its quite old already
11:32
<joebaker>
I see. This LDAP Screensaver thing is mostly a problem with permissions to these files...
11:32
/etc/ldap/ldap.conf
11:32
/etc/libnss-ldap.conf
11:32
/etc/pam_ldap.conf
11:34
Only thing is that all these files _are_ world readable on my system. :( I'll post that to the bug report.
11:34

Hello. I got everything working with the Ubuntu Fiesty beta, and am even writing this from a client (using compiz even!), so have gotten almost everything set up, but cannot figure out how to get USB devices to work. Can anyone point me to any relevant docs or know what might be the problem?
