hello
02:18
does every nic support network booting?
02:19
I am a teacher and I want to set up a Thin-client server
02:19
and i have to buy 13 1000Mbs NICs
02:20
but i don't know if they will boot
02:21
I tried with the onboard nic .. it works fine but it's pretty slow cause it's a Fast Ethernet card

I'm running LTSP on a Gentoo machine. Is there a way to get the script to download an Ubuntu image instead of Gentoo?
08:54
I'm sorry, get ltsp-build-client to download an Ubuntu image instead of a Gentoo stage.
09:15
<Hyperbyte>
Why would you want to do that?
09:20
<mardok>
I'm running the server on a PowerPC machine, and the clients are x86
09:21
<Hyperbyte>
Hm... well, sorry if this a dumb question... because I have no experience with Gentoo or Ubuntu whatsoever
09:22
But what's wrong with letting ltsp-build-client build a Gentoo client root?
09:23
<mardok>
It seems to be hanging when I run ltsp-build-client. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I let it run for an hour, and it seems to be doing nothing. No output or anything.
09:25
<Hyperbyte>
And you think letting a client chroot of Ubuntu work together with a server on Gentoo will solve this?
09:26
To me that seems more like asking for a lot of additional trouble, but I'm quite novice with LTSP... so again my apologies if I say something ignorant. =)
09:26
I'd start by running ltsp-build-client again and doing a 'ps aux' to find out exactly where it gets stuck
09:26
<Appiah>
alot of people are using lenny ltsp server with ubuntu chroots
09:26
<Hyperbyte>
Really?
09:26
<mardok>
I'm not expecting it to suddenly work, I'm just wondering if there's a 'switch' or a line to edit in one of the configs to switch from Gentoo to Ubuntu.
09:27
<Hyperbyte>
And that just works? That's cool.
09:27
:)
09:27
<Appiah>
well I've seen people here use it
09:28
<Hyperbyte>
Anyway, the only advice I could give you is to find out where ltsp-build-client gets stuck. ltsp-build-client is a script, not a binary file, so you should be able to find out where exactly it hangs without too much problems.
09:37
<mardok>
Here's one of the outputs from 'ps ux': tar -C /opt/ltsp/x86/x86 -xvpj /opt/ltsp/x86/x86/stage3-x86-current.tar.bz2
09:37
Seems like I have a misconfiguration somewhere
09:44
<Hyperbyte>
Okay, well, you could add -v to the tar command in the script to get verbose output from it, see if it gives anything useful.
09:44
And then work from there, you should find the cause of the problems.
09:45
Maybe ltsp-build-client even keeps some sort of logfile, I don't know.
09:45
Unfortunately, I have to go. Stick around though, someone else with a lot more knowledge about LTSP might pitch in. :-)

<komunista>
uday: try find in ubuntu documentation - wiki
10:16
ubuntu is good documented and most things works under debian too ;-)
10:17
<uday>
Have it here and now . but will it work for lenny.
10:17
<komunista>
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP
10:17
<uday>
some things are not matching the description,
10:18
<komunista>
maybe because lenny has older LTSP version
10:18
I never used LTSP under Lenny
10:18
<uday>
also i couln't find exact documentation for ltsp 5 anywhere
10:20
<komunista>
but why do you dont't try squeeze? it is one-two months befere release
10:20
<uday>
in lenny, i checked the version from the synaptic package manager
10:20
it is 5.1.10-2
10:21
<komunista>
under squeeze it is 5.2.4-2
10:22
and has ltsp-doc package too
10:22
<uday>
then i think i must
10:22
try squeeze
10:22
<komunista>
I am using squeeze for LTSP from june this year
10:23
<uday>
inspired to hear this
10:23
really!!
10:24
i'm trying to setup LTSP for students for net browsing
10:24
<komunista>
I am using it in my class on secundary shool
10:24
<uday>
for 15 to 20 clients
10:25
<komunista>
and network?
10:25
<uday>
here in india i hope it is not possible at least by now
10:25
<komunista>
LAN network :-)
10:25
<uday>
yes
10:25
<komunista>
nentwork speed 100Mb or 1Gb?
10:25
<uday>
LAN of course
10:25
1Gbps
10:26
<komunista>
no problem for < 20 clients - I have 100Mb and bandwitch is cca 30 Mb/s
10:26
<uday>
purchased clients with 512 MB and dual core cpu
10:26
<komunista>
nice :-)
10:26
I have 256 MB RAM and 800 Mhz CPU
10:27
<uday>
but confused on server specs
10:27
<komunista>
only grafic cards are my problem :-(
10:27
I have 4 x 2GB Intel Xeon with 4 GB RAM and two NIC
10:28
cca 50% resources are unused ;-)
10:28
<uday>
how many clients?
10:28
<komunista>
15
10:28
<uday>
works fine ?
10:28
do you use it for internet or teaching
10:29
<komunista>
all works, but clients hve slow graffic card and no video
10:29
internet, teaching, all things
10:29
<uday>
but can't play video files??
10:30
<komunista>
no, 100Mb network is small for vide
10:30
*video
10:30
one fullscreen (1024 x 768) video takes 50Mb/s and more...
10:30rjune has joined #ltsp
10:36
<uday>
presently i'm using lenny at home -- simple P4 2.8GHz with 1GB RAM and a laptop as client a video takes nearly 12 Mb/s
10:37
but sound comes from server
10:38
<komunista>
eh, I don know write it in english... :-P
10:38
I have snmp monitoring enabled and I see 5min average NIC usage
10:38
<uday>
right now i'm using lenny at home
10:38
<komunista>
I take information from this monitoring...
10:39
<uday>
i'm watching at system monitor's resources tab
10:42
i'm confused about server's specs
10:42
should i choose a xeon or a quad core or core i7 would be fine?
10:48
<komunista>
it depends which apps you will be using :-)
10:48
but for me 4 cores are enough
10:49
no more than 20 - 25% CPU usage...
10:49
no more than 0.5-1 1 min load average
10:52
<uday>
that is why i'm trying for local apps
10:52
i don't know what's fat/lowfat clients !
10:54
i want to use firefox with flash, openoffice, educational packages and video
10:58
<komunista>
fat client has most of aplications as locall apps
10:58
thin client has most apps on server
10:59
<uday>
i think with my client specs, fat client will be useful
10:59
<komunista>
yes
10:59
but maintenance of thin clients is pretty simplest
11:00
I update/set apps on server and all client are changed :-P
11:00
but my clients are light
11:04
<uday>
yesterday i tried with router attached to the switch
11:04
server was core2duo
11:05
with 1 GB RAM
11:05
750MB swap
11:05
clients were dual core 2.4 GHz
11:06
and 24 clients were there
11:06
RAM and swap were being used to the full
11:07
then browsing slowed down
11:07
i added 2GB more swap

'm not sure about their state in debian though...
11:50
To speed up the internet, try squid
11:56
<uday>
i suppose and also i found that i need to develop my linux skills for using squid
12:18uday has quit IRC

<komunista>
squid maybe can help
12:25
I has squid and and inspect diference between incoming traffic from internet and outgoing (from squid) to LAN
12:25
the difference was less than 5% - by dynamic pages...
