<grapp>
hello i have a problem with setting up a thinclient when i want to to start the client with gpxe floppy i get this message: no filename or root path specified no more network devices. Where i must set the rootpath? i hope somebody can help me
10:21cliebow has joined #ltsp
10:21
<alkisg>
grapp: you need to set it in your dhcpd.conf
10:21
<grapp>
alkisg: can you send me an example?
10:22
<alkisg>
grapp: distro/version?
10:22
<grapp>
alkisg: ubuntu jaunty
10:23
<alkisg>
Is your dhcp server running? Try: sudo invoke-rc.d dhcp3-server status
10:23
<grapp>
ok one moment i must login first
10:26brendan0powers has quit IRC
10:27petre has joined #ltsp
10:27
<grapp>
alkisg: yes the server is runnig
10:28
<alkisg>
grapp: ok. Do you have another dhcp server in your network? E.g. a router?
10:28
and, how is your client connected to the ltsp-server? On it's second nic, on a seperate switch etc?
10:28
<grapp>
yes
10:28
alkisg: server and client connectet to a switch but the router also
10:29
<alkisg>
That's the wrong cabling
10:29
The recommented setup is for the clients to be on a seperate subnet
10:29
You can't have 2 dhcp servers on the same switch
10:29
There are workarounds, but you deviate from the recommented setup
10:29
<grapp>
so ist is recommented to habe to nics for the server
10:30
<alkisg>
2 nics, yes
10:30
Or, you could turn off the dhcp server in your router
10:30
<grapp>
and when is disconnectet the router and test the configuration without internet it must work
10:30
<alkisg>
Or, you could go to workarounds...
10:31
Yes, it should work if you turn off the dhcp server from the router
10:31
<grapp>
ok i think i turn off the dhcp server into the router
10:31
<alkisg>
Or if you pull out the router temporarily
10:32
grapp: how many nics on your server? 1 or 2?
10:33
<grapp>
at the time 1 but it is only a test enviroment i can order 2 nics for the final enviroment
10:33
<alkisg>
What IP does it have?
10:33
(=run ifconfig eth0
10:34
<grapp>
192.168.0.104
10:34
<alkisg>
Hmmm I don't think that's a static IP, is it?
10:34
<grapp>
no
10:34
<alkisg>
For dhcp3-server to run properly when you unplug the router, you should have a static ip
10:35
<grapp>
i think i must set a static ip when i disconnectet the router
10:35
<alkisg>
I.e set it to 192.168.0.1
10:36
<grapp>
ok thank you for help i want to try and than come back to report
10:36
<alkisg>
ok
10:36
<grapp>
see yot later
10:37

alkisg: thank you it works
11:21
<alkisg>
grapp: you're welcome. There are workarounds for 1 nic, if you want to keep using it this way I can give you some links for this...
11:22
<grapp>
but when i try to login on ubuntu login manager then i get the message no response from server restarting and the login manager going to restart
11:23
maybe there is no windowmanager
11:26
alkisg: is it possible?
11:26
<alkisg>
grapp: when you change ip to the server, you need to run:
11:26
sudo ltsp-update-sshkeys
11:26
sudo ltsp-update-image
11:27
After that, reboot the client.
11:27
<grapp>
oh i forgot the sshkeys thanks i want to try again brb

alkisg: So im back and i have update-sshkeys but the login problem is still there
11:36
<alkisg>
Did you also run ltsp-update-image?
11:36
<grapp>
yes
11:36
<alkisg>
and rebooted the client?
11:36
<grapp>
also
11:37
<alkisg>
Can you disable the router dhcp server, so that you can be here for feedback and also boot a client?
11:37
<grapp>
maybe i need to install a desktop-enviroment in the chroot and update the image
11:37
<alkisg>
No, no de is needed in the chroot
11:37
Do you have a de on the server?
11:37
Or is it "ubuntu server" ?
11:38
<grapp>
ubuntu server without enviroment
11:38
<alkisg>
Then you need to install a de on the server
11:38
*not* on the chroot
11:38
I think `sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop` should do it
11:39
<grapp>
ok and one more question for example i want to install firefox fore the clients how i do it firefox install on the server or in the chroot ?
11:39
<alkisg>
On the server,
11:39
<grapp>
and then update image
11:39
<alkisg>
*unless* you want it to run as localapp
11:40
What will your client specs be?
11:40
RAM/CPU?
11:40
<grapp>
sorry i dont understand your question but i want to run the app on the server.
11:41
<alkisg>
Then you just install it on the server
11:41
No update image necessary
11:41
I was asking about how fast your PCs will be, ram and cpu, so that I would propose that you ran firefox locally
11:41
<grapp>
ok i understand the chroot is only for the apps which running on the client
11:42
<alkisg>
"localapps" is a trick that makes the clients run *some* applications locally, so that they run faster
11:42
So if you clients have > 256 RAM, you should do that, it will be faster.
11:43
<grapp>
ok now i have understand
11:43
<alkisg>
ok

<grapp>
alkisg: now i use the ubuntu server edition on the server but what is better the server edition or the normal ubuntu desktop edition because of the standard installation of a de on the desktop edition yout understand what i mean?
11:47
<fasthans>
hello everyone.
11:48
<grapp>
hello fasthans
11:48
<fasthans>
I installed gimp in the chroot environment.
11:48
and I setup the network printer as a cups printer
11:48
hi grapp
11:49
now when I call up the print dialog on the thin client. it takes about 15 seconds and then suddenly the cups/network printer is shown.
11:49
any idea why it is so slow?
11:50Ahmuck has joined #ltsp
11:51
<alkisg>
grapp: there shouldn't be any difference. For newer installations, the alternate cd is recommented
11:51
...because it doesn't need internet access to install the ltsp chroot
11:52
<fasthans>
hi alkis
11:53
can you help me on the above issue?
11:54
<grapp>
ok and what do you think i should use a wm or a de i think a de is maybe very slow or? sorry for my hundereds of questions but iam a newbe forgive me xD
11:54
<alkisg>
fasthans: sorry, I don't know why would that be.
11:55
grapp: a de shouldn't be slow. Video playback is another subject, though :)
11:56
<grapp>
ok
11:57
im away to install a de on my server thx for help brb
11:58
<fasthans>
to be more precise: I open the print dialog in gimp and then it takes about 15 seconds for the printer to show up. each time I call up the print dialog it's again 15 seconds.
11:59
but I can print from the thin client
12:00
nad ideas?
12:00
any ideas

14:28
the layout in X is ok; but ain't good in cli
14:36
<alkisg>
kas: distro/version?
14:37
<kas>
debian 5.0.3
14:37
<alkisg>
Is that Lenny? I'm not really familiar with debian...
14:37
<kas>
yep
14:38
<alkisg>
Has Lenny switched to using console-setup for console?
14:38
<kas>
and i have another question
14:38
how to do?
14:38
<alkisg>
I.e. if you chroot to /opt/ltsp/i386 and run dpkg-reconfigure console-setup, does that work?
14:38
<kas>
nope :p tryed it already
14:38
perl warning
14:39
<alkisg>
? did you mount /proc?
14:39
<kas>

14:39
<alkisg>
Hrm works fine on my Ubuntu without mounting proc. So yup, can't help you, sorry... :(
14:40
<kas>

14:40
<alkisg>
If noone answers, try on a weekday where more people are here
14:40
<kas>
like iceweasel?
14:40
I chroot?
14:40
<alkisg>
You add those on the server usually
14:40
<kas>
on the server
14:40
ok
14:40
<alkisg>
Unless your clients are powerful enough for you to use "localapps"
14:41
<kas>
oke, i'll install them on the server
14:41
what about a terminal in X?
14:41
<alkisg>
What do you mean? how to run an xterm?
14:42
<kas>
i have only gksu (for root terminal) but after entering password it wont start
14:42
yeah
14:42
<alkisg>
Don't you have gnome-terminal installed?
14:43
Or, just run xterm...
14:43
<kas>
oke
14:43
<alkisg>
(I guess I'm not understanding what you're saying...)
14:44
<kas>
i just want to start an terminal as a normal user
14:45
and the root terminal as wel but it asks for a passwd but after entering it jsut quits
14:45
xterm doenst work
14:45
<alkisg>
Why doesn't xterm work?
14:45
<kas>
beuh :p
14:45
<alkisg>
It isn't installed?
14:46
Well, if you got gnome, it's on Applications > Accessories > Terminal
14:46
<kas>
yeah it should
14:46
<alkisg>
And? it isn't?
