Good Morning. When I connect to SSH and enter my password the "prompt" is never displayed. It just sits there on the client side. When I check the auth.log on the server I see that the login was authenticated successfully. The last thing in the log is "do_pam_account: called".

<JREwing>
hello, may I ask here for help? for two days Iam fighting with configuration of LTSP client
13:16
<jammcq>
sure, go ahead and ask your question
13:18
<JREwing>
thanks.. Iam near of fully functional client, but i have problem with Keybord.. It works fine in command line, but if start X session, keyboard become inactive
13:18
<jammcq>
how is your mouse connected ?
13:18
<JREwing>
my mouse and keyboard is USB
13:18
<jammcq>
hmm
13:18
what do you have in lts.conf ?
13:19
<JREwing>
[Default]
13:19
SERVER=192.168.0.150
13:19
XF86CONFIG_FILE=/etc/xorg.conf
13:19
XSERVER=vesa
13:19
X_MODE_0=1024x768
13:19
X_COLOR_DEPTH=16
13:19
X_MOUSE_PROTOCOL="ExplorerPS/2"
13:19
X_MOUSE_DEVICE="/dev/input/mice"
13:19
X_MOUSE_RESOLUTION=400
13:19
<mistik1>
wow
13:19
<JREwing>
X_MOUSE_BUTTONS=3
13:19
USE_XFS=N
13:19
SCREEN_01= startx
13:19
SCREEN_02= shell
13:19
SOUND=N
13:19
USE_NFS_SWAP=Y
13:19
SWAP_SERVER=192.168.0.150
13:19
NFS_SWAPDIR=/opt/ltsp/swap
13:19
RUNLEVEL=5
13:19
XKBMODEL="pc105"
13:19
XKBLAYOUT="us"
13:19
<jammcq>
why do you have a special XF86CONFIG_FILE ?
13:20ChanServ sets mode: +o mistik1
13:20
<jammcq>
why do you have a special XF86CONFIG_FILE ?
13:20
<JREwing>
I had to make my own xorg.conf because my monitor can use much better resolution then my graphic card can have..
13:21
it is full xorg.conf
13:21
<jammcq>
ok, do you realize that when you use a xorg.conf file, it completely ignores all other X settings in lts.conf ?
13:21
there's no point in saying things like : X_MOUSE_DEVICE="/dev/input/mice"
13:21
<JREwing>
even mouse and keyboard settings?
13:22
<mistik1>
yes
13:22
<JREwing>
I thought only graphic is override?
13:22
<jammcq>
yes, all those X_ settings are used to construct a xorg config file during boot up. By you specifying your own config file
13:22
you are responsible for ALL things related to X
13:22
keyboard and mouse are all part of the Xorg.conf file
13:23
so, if your keyboard isn't working, maybe you've not defined a keyboard section in your xorg.conf file
13:23
what kind of video card do you have?
13:23
<JREwing>
so there are two solutions, I need to force an autodetect to use less resolution or find mistake in xorg.conf
13:24
<jammcq>
what resolution do you want?
13:24
<JREwing>
I use vesa driver, I dond know the type of card because I have thinclient box with AMD geoder processor
13:24
<jammcq>
what resolution do you want?
13:24
<JREwing>
I want 1024x768
13:24
<jammcq>
that's the default
13:25
<JREwing>
if i place X_MODE_0 to lts.conf, it was ignored
13:25
<jammcq>
you didn't get 1024x768 before trying your own xorg.conf ?
13:25
it's ignored now, because you have a XF86CONFIG_FILE entry
13:25
<JREwing>
still use max resolution ( the monitor resolution is 1600x1200 for max )
13:26
<jammcq>
and for geode, you probably don't want 'vesa', you probably want 'nsc'
13:27
<JREwing>
that was the reason of my xorg.conf file, I've try it without, but have 1600x1200 screen
13:27
<jammcq>
so try without, and set XSERVER = nsc
13:27
and X_MODE_0 = 1024x768
13:27
<JREwing>
so, I'll try
13:27
<jammcq>
so ok :)
13:28
btw, i've NEVER seen a geode do better than 1280x1024
13:28
<JREwing>
autodetect give me a vesa driver
13:28
yes, this is the max resolution, but monitor can more
13:28
<jammcq>
try 'nsc' instead of 'vesa'
13:30
<JREwing>
by the way, this thin client si wonderful thing.. it need only 10W for work
13:35
so, screen is now usable, but keyboard is still dead :-/
13:36
<jammcq>
take out those 'XKB...' lines. English is the default for ltsp

About to post a questino to who ever may be listening! LOL
18:30
.
18:30
I need help with an NSS, PAM, NCP with SSH issue. Im using an NSS/NCP module in my nsswitch.conf file to do a user lookup on an NDS server.
18:30
When I try to log in via SSH the user is found with the NSS module, authenticated via an NCP so module but I still can't log on.
18:30
.
18:30
I see in the /var/auth.log file that the user is successfully authenticated.
18:30
.
18:30
The last message I get in my auth.log is
18:30
-ssd[6995]: debug1: do_pam_account: called
18:30
.
18:30
When this happens the ssh client side accepts the password and just sits there.
18:30
.
18:30
Eventually another error is logged in auth.log
18:31
-Fatal: Timeout before authentication for 127.0.0.1
18:31

20:04
<jammcq>
yeah
20:04
<msaul>
It's been a while!
20:04
<jammcq>
in fact, I'll be in TO on thursday
20:05
<msaul>
What are you doing?
20:05
Can you visit Seneca?
20:05
<jammcq>
scotty and I are getting together for a small hack-fest
20:05
<msaul>
cool
20:05
I would like to show you sometime what
20:05
ltsp has done around TO
20:05
<jammcq>
turns out Toronto is a good location. I can drive there easily, and scott can fly there easily
20:05
we'll be pretty busy
20:05
<msaul>
Next Time?

20:07
<jammcq>
better, I'd like you to post a story on the SuccessStories page on our wiki
20:07
<msaul>
Will Do
20:07
<jammcq>
it's picking up in lots of places
20:07
just heard about stuff going on in South Africa
20:08
<msaul>
Can't keep a good idea down
20:08
cool
20:08
Are you good at troubleshooting LDA?
20:08
<jammcq>
well, I know how to point you to the troubleshooting guide
20:08
<msaul>
I got a Pentium III with a Pentium IV server running Edubuntu 6.10
20:08
<jammcq>
but are you using LTSP-4.2 or are you using the LTSP that comes with Edubuntu ?
20:09
<msaul>
The LTSP that comes with Edubuntu
20:09
Sound is perfect
20:09
I read the wiki
20:09
<jammcq>
umm, seems like its just a matter of setting an option in lts.conf
20:09
but i'm not sure
20:09
<msaul>
I did add the two lines
20:09
<vagrantc>
and adding a user to the fuse group
20:09
<jammcq>
that's what next weekend is for, for me and scotty to get up to speed with the Ubuntu and Debian work
20:10
<vagrantc>
jammcq: i thought thats what the september shindig was for :P
20:10
<msaul>
LOCAL_DEVICE_01= and LOCAL_DEVICE_02= etc
20:10
<jammcq>
vagrantc: yeah, some how, I've been too busy lately, to keep up with it
20:10
<msaul>
I also set HOTPLUG = Y
20:11
<jammcq>
msaul: I think those are all OLD settings
20:11
vagrantc: do you know what to set in lts.conf ?
20:11
<vagrantc>
LOCALDEV=True
20:11
<msaul>
OK, that's it?
20:11
<vagrantc>
think so
20:12
<msaul>
Do I bother with the LDA scripts?
20:12
<jammcq>
scripts ?
20:12
<msaul>
In the wiki
20:12
<jammcq>
that's old stuff
20:12
pre LTSP-4.2 stuff
20:12Faithful has quit IRC
20:13
<msaul>
So I take that out and just use that setting you just gave?
20:13
in lts.conf
20:13
<jammcq>
ummm
20:13
I think so. I'm pretty sure that ogra already included everything you need
20:13
<msaul>
That makes sense - a colleage said
20:13
<vagrantc>
msaul: and add your users to the fuse group ... theres a page somewhere on the ubuntu wikis about it
20:14
<msaul>
OK - will do
20:14
Thanks for the help...
20:14
I will try those excellent suggestions
20:14
Jim
20:14
Lets discuss to get you guys up to TO in October
20:14
That conference is getting really big now
20:14
It goes over 2 - 3 days
20:14
<a5benwillis>
whats the fuse group????
20:15
<jammcq>
msaul: what's the date ?
20:15
<msaul>
That conference is really taking on a life of its own
20:15
I'll get back to that and e-mail you.
20:15
asap
20:15
<vagrantc>
a5benwillis: its a unix group that, at least on debian and ubuntu, provides access to use fuse filesystems.
20:15
a5benwillis: and ltspfs is a fuse filesystem

20:16

20:16
I hear Edubuntu is coming out with 7.-- in April
20:17
<jammcq>
7 ?
20:17
<msaul>
Bad memory - just let me check my e-mail for a sec
20:17
<vagrantc>
that would be 7.04 ... as it's (200)7.04(april)
20:17
<jammcq>
yeah
20:18
<msaul>
yes 7.04
20:18
John Selmys was just talking about that...
20:18
well thanks for that great help
20:19
Perhaps I can give you a tour of Orangeville when you come up
20:19
I will get back to you on the dates.
20:19
You visit and your presentation was very well received
20:19
In fact, it was at the
20:20
point that the conference
20:20
started to really take-off!
20:20
<jammcq>
cool
20:20

I only get the gray screen when trying to connect to the server with vnc? would this still apply?
22:31

hmmm...
22:32
depends on how vnc is starting its session ...
22:33
<andersonpaul2005>
it was working with the default settings, then I changed something in ithe Display (on server) and then it quit working
22:34
all i did when it was working, is used vnc, put in address and login screen came up?
22:36

in my limited experience with vnc, you have to start a session, which you then can connect/disconnect to ...
