<hughessd>
is anyone around to field a question?
00:15
I rebooted our LTSP and now have no internet access, even though other machines attached to the same router can get out.
00:15
why could this be happening?

hughessd: dns working on the client?
00:22
<hughessd>
um
00:23
not sure
00:23
that is what i supposed was happening
00:23
but honestly I don't know how to check/change it in LTSP
00:23
from my laptop (attached through the router), i can ping www.google.com
00:23
but from a terminal on a client, no dice

<abeehc-_>
are you doing localapps?
00:43
<johnny>
hughessd, i just let you dhcp server tell the client which one to use
00:43
for local i mean
00:45
<hughessd>
abeehc: no localapps
00:45
cyberorg: it explicitly says not to hand edit...don't wanna break it
00:51
i did it
00:51
and it worked
00:51
thank you cyberorg
00:51
and others, for the quick replies

<cyberorg>
hi johnny :)
00:51
<hughessd>
its 11pm here and i was bout at my wits end
00:51
<johnny>
hughessd, it won't get saved that way
00:52
hello cyberorg
00:52
<hughessd>
yeah thats what i figured
00:52
but it doesn't get cleared out until a reboot, right?
00:52
<johnny>
well sure
00:52
<cyberorg>
hughessd, is that in your thin client or the server?
00:52
<hughessd>
or "networking restart"
00:52
that was the server
00:52
<johnny>
but it's possible for it to be saved, if you set the right values in the server chroot
00:53
or have your dhcp server serve it
00:53
<hughessd>
on the network, the thinClients get IPs from dhcp, the other IPs are all static
00:54
my LTSP setup has 2 NICs
00:56
so how can it get it to automatically save on the server even after a reboot?
00:57
<cyberorg>
on the server i use chattr +i /path/to/file that i do not want modified automatically
01:01
<hughessd>
ok. thankyou again cyberorg.
01:01
im going to get going now. its been a long night.
01:01
thank you all for your help.

<arx>
Hi, I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 w/ LTSP with 1 NIC. I'm having to use XDM_DIRECTX=YES (so I can run remote apps with rsh). Now I don't know if this is a problem with using LDM_DIRECTX=True or not, but when I have them turn on "Remote Desktop" it shows the server's IP not the terminal IP. Any way to fix this, or another way to remote to the box so I can train them (they are 4 hours away).
09:05
<alkisg_>
LDM_DIRECTX has to do with X traffic, it's not related to rsh
09:05
All apps in LTSP run on the ltsp server, that's why the server IP shows
09:06
You just want to share a vnc screen with them?
09:06
<arx>
yes
09:06
<alkisg_>
The first vino-server instance is on 5900, the second on 5901 etc
09:06
All those on the server (even if they login on terminals)
09:07
So you should be able to connect to those ports - why can't you?
09:07
If they're behind routers etc you'd need port forwarding, I suppose you took care of that...
09:07
<arx>
I didn't try different ports.
09:08
<alkisg_>
If you didn't port forward, you could use empathy (it has a share-desktop feature) or reverse vnc connections instead
09:09
<arx>
ooh, those are good suggestions :)
09:10
so, going back a step.... every terminal will increase the port # (5900, 5901, etc)... so do I use the servers IP with the different port # to get to the terminals?
09:11
<alkisg_>
Yes, assuming we're talking about vino-server and not some other program.
09:12
<arx>
cool
09:14
thx! this gives me something to go on. Let me experiment and if I have any other questions/problems I will come back.... thanks!!!
09:14
<alkisg_>
Sure. For reverse vnc connections, *you* need to port forward 5500, they run x11vnc -connect <your-ip>, and you run vncviewer -listen
09:15
<arx>
ya, I have limited experience with reverse vnc, so that info will help.

Get a localxterm on the client and check your dns server etc from there
10:41
!localxterm

<ltspbot>
alkisg_: "localxterm" :: while sitting on a thin client, open a gnome terminal. In that, run: ltsp-localapps xterm. An xterm will open. That xterm runs locally, so any commands you enter there are executed directly on the client.

10:48
<alkisg_>
I don't know your ip settings, but try: ping 209.85.135.99
10:49
(that's google.com for me) - if you get "no route to host" then it's a routing problem
10:49
or, ping your dns server
10:51
<dgroos>
is my DNS server on the client the WAN DNS or the ltsp DNS? Do I even have DNS server on LTSP?
10:53
I tried the ping you mentioned and it didn't give message but just did nothing and when I control-C it just said... 100% packet loss...
10:53
<alkisg_>
cat /etc/resolv.conf tells you your dns server
10:53
It's set either by the dhcp server or by your lts.conf

10:56
<dgroos>
Arggg! just figured out that I didn't modify my lts.conf (thanks for mentioning it) and I think that's the prob... I'll let you know.
10:57
<alkisg_>
Normally the dns server is set by dhcpd.conf
10:57
setting it in lts.conf is only needed if you have a bad dhcp setup
10:57
<dgroos>
should I check dhcpd.conf first?
10:58
<alkisg_>
Yes
10:58
You should have your dns server there
10:58
(probably not, I mean you should put it there :))
10:59
<dgroos>
Which copy, /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf or /etc/ltsp/dhcp.conf?
11:00
(glad you told me in time, I was starting to dismantle my HD... ;)
11:02
<alkisg_>
/etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf :)
11:02
e.g. option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.100;
11:04
<dgroos>
should I have the WAN DNS there?
11:06
<alkisg_>
Yes
11:06
(whatever you have in the server /etc/resolv.conf)
11:08Faithful has joined #ltsp
11:09
<dgroos>
Yes, does have WAN DNS there, same as in resolv.conf
11:12

I'm not sure I got you there, you mean that you already had the dns server in your dhcpd.conf?
11:12Selveste1___ has quit IRC
11:14
<dgroos>
Yes, the option domain-name-servers in the ltsp/dhcpd.conf is the same as in the resolv.conf, our WAN DNS.
11:14
<alkisg_>
And on the localxterm, if you cat /etc/resolv.conf, you don't see that dns server there?
11:15
<dgroos>
correct, it is the information from my house (the network where I set up the server). Should I rebuild the chroot for some reason?
11:16Kyle__ has joined #ltsp
11:18
<alkisg_>
No, check your lts.conf
11:19
That old dns server isn't stored on the chroot, it's coming from somewhere else, so if it's not dhcpd.conf then it must be lts.conf...
11:20
<dgroos>
Yes, as I mentioned, the lts.conf in the tftboot does have the old info and you said that was a sign that my dhcpd.conf wasn't set up correctly?
11:22
<alkisg_>
Erm, what I meant/mean is: dhcpd.conf is the correct place to put the dns server,
11:22
BUT lts.conf overrides dhcpd.conf
11:23
So, if you have put it in lts.conf, either change it, or delete it from there and put it to dhcpd.conf
11:24
<dgroos>
Ahhh... seems it's more eloquent to delete it from lts.conf I'll do that, then restart dhcp?
11:25
<alkisg_>
If I understood you correctly, and you already have the dns server in dhcp, you don't even need to restart it
11:26
Just delete the old lts.conf entry
11:27
<dgroos>
and it works D:
11:27
ooops! :D
11:27
Again, alkisg, you ARE the man!

i am suppse to do deployment of LTSP in a remote village where internet connection is not available
12:20
so i have 2 use CD n ISO images
12:21
ok johnny...firstly, I mounted the ISO of alternatvie Cd of ubuntu 10.04 and then added it in the softwares sorces
12:22
then i installed the server using : sudo ltsp-server-standalone openssh-server
12:22
this command finished all the tasks without any error
12:23
then i entered another command: sudo ltsp-build-client --mirror file:///mnt --security --mirror file:///mnt

12:24
<johnny>
aren't they 2 different cds?
12:24
they would need 2 different mount paths
12:24
<gurkhali69>
the process terminated with an error
12:25
i not using any cds
12:25
i only used iso file
12:25
i already have ubuntu 10.04 installed in my computer
12:25
<johnny>
i don't think yoru --mirror file:///mnt stuff is right
12:26
alkisg_, isn't there a command to use the the server's stuff?
12:26
<gurkhali69>
ltsp-build-client
12:26
uses server's stuff
12:26
<johnny>
i don't think that's what you want to use
12:27
<gurkhali69>
but there will be no internet where I am gonna install LTSP system...so I am supposed to learn how to install without use of internet
12:27
<johnny>

well, you shouldn't have to do anything, it should work out of the box
22:49
of course.. if you added nbd-server manually, it might break ltsp
22:50
fluvvell, really tho, if you want good support, come back in about 6 hours
22:50
this is late night for most of the people, so you're not going to get good help
22:50
