any one knows about sound support in ltsp 5.0 for debian ethc
06:46
etch
06:47
<sep>
jane1, isnt it mentioned in the ltsp docs under /usr/share/doc/ltsp*
06:48

<ltspbot`>
ogra: "debian" is is a GNU/Linux based operating system that makes an excellent LTSP server. You can find it at http://www.debian.org. for information about LTSP on debian see http://wiki.debian.org/LTSP
06:48
<ogra>
should be at the bottom of the wikipage
06:48
etch had no proper sournd support, either take the backported packages or ubuntu since edgy
06:49
<jane1>
ogra, I want to use etch for LTSP, with sound support, but as you told there is no proper sound support, but what about backported packgagees

hi all, can anybody help to configure a keyboard layout..
07:57
<ogra>
masus, you set that in lts.conf
07:58exodos has quit IRC
08:00
<ogra>
masus, depending on the release you use thats in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf (older releases) or /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf (latest release)

hmm
08:02
:)
08:02
u remember me
08:02

(likely not since they are stuck with nfs, which we dropped)
08:02
<masus>
ok but what to add to the lts.conf
08:03
XKBMODEL = tr ,
08:03
does not work
08:03
<ogra>
tr is not a model
08:04
pc105 would be a model

tr is a layout

hey folks, I have a question. I'm not using LTSP, but I don't see any better place to ask...
08:24
I've got a problem when booting a debian etch stock kernel using nfs from a Ubuntu Gutsy system.
08:25IRCzito has quit IRC
08:26
<exodos>
toresbe: go on...
08:26
<ogra>
toresbe, thats unlikely to work
08:26
the mounted root uses /lib/modules of the nfs ... which is out of sync with the running debian kernel
08:28
<exodos>
but you can copy lib/modules/<debian-kernel-version> from debian to ubuntu nfsroot dir
08:29
and run depmod -a
08:30
<ogra>
well, netx thing is that udev will break
08:30
debian simply isnt ubuntu :)
08:30
its not interchangeable
08:31
especially not for single packages
08:31
(after udev you wil get probs with upstart very likely)
08:31
just use the ubuntu ernel to boot the ubuntu chroot
08:31
*kernel

sorry, I got an IRQ here
08:36
I've debootstrapped a file tree from which I've taken the kernel, thus the kernel and /lib/modules are in sync
08:36
everything is OK up until the NFS mounting
08:37
/srv/linroot slave01(rw,no_root_squash)
08:37

how does your root-path directive look like ?
08:37
<toresbe>
http://gunkies.org/stuff/nfs-problem.png

08:38
my problem is that I'm getting the RPC error 2 thing

jammcq: Morning, Jim!!!
08:49
jammcq: I've got the first LTSP 4.2 with Xorg 7.1.1 working...
08:50
:-D
08:51* ogra wonders why
08:52
<jammcq>
because he can
08:52
<Guaraldo>
ogra: That's a long, long history...
08:52
<ogra>
heh
08:52
well, i'd just see that ltsp5 gets into your $FAV_DISTRO
08:52
instead of scattering development over old versions
08:53
<jammcq>
he's got a specific need for a specific client
08:53
<Q-FUNK>
ogra: a surprising amount of people run thin clients over deprecated LTSP deployments or using deprecated distro releases.
08:53
<jammcq>
overall, it's better to do the $FAV_DISTRO thing, but obviously, that requires cooperation FROM the $FAV_DISTRO, which isn't always possible|easy
08:53
<ogra>
yeah
08:54
<toresbe>
ogra: anyway, I've ascertained that portmap is listening, and that nfsd and mountd registers against it. Any other known issues?
08:54
<ogra>
Q-FUNK, indeed, i wasnt talking about usage but development
08:54
<jammcq>
$FAV_DISTRO isn't always the best choice, when looking at specific cases. it's just GENERALLY the best choice
08:54
<Guaraldo>
ogra: Sure... But ower LTSP4.2 in this client has many alterations... We made an LTSP server with dual boot on clients (GNU/Linux and Windows. The user can choose)...
08:54
<ogra>
but if its a special project ,...
08:54
<Q-FUNK>
for instance, I've got two customers currently askign whether they can run a ThinCan over some old obscure RH release.
08:54
<ogra>
Guaraldo, yeah, understood
08:54
vagrant wanted to put such a menu into ltsp5 btw
08:55
not sure he ever started to code that (trivial task with ltsp5 though)
08:55
<Guaraldo>
ogra: Well... maybe I can help him...
08:55
<ogra>
yeah
08:55
it wont be more than 20 lines of code or so
08:56
doable in a day :)
08:56
<Guaraldo>
ogra: Yep... maybe some lines more than 20... but not so BIG...
08:57
<ogra>
we have a wikipage assembling such a thing anywhere
08:57
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPMultiboot
08:57
there it is
08:57
<Guaraldo>
ogra: Just need a menu that runs on client and writes a temp file with the option...
08:57
<ogra>
its immature, but should work
09:00
<Blinny>
It's non-trivial to do upgrades to most distros when things are scattered all over the filesystem and various partitions. That's why I'm using deprecated LTSP. Plus, it works.
09:00
<ogra>
??
09:00
<Blinny>
Many companies (mine included) can't spring for separate machines to do separate tasks. Thus, a major LTSP/distro upgrade also affects databases, email, etc.
09:00
<evarlast>
I just did the first MPI test run on my rebuilt using ltsp cluster. This computational cluster is now WAY more maintainable
09:00
thanks ltsp
09:00
<Blinny>
I'm a little late getting into the convo. My apologies.
09:00
<ogra>
Blinny, file locations havent changed for 2 years in ltsp5
09:01
<Guaraldo>
ower solution is very simpler... After all conventional boot of LTSP 4.2, a menu is opened and user choose which sistem. So the client starts XDMCP system or RDesktop...
09:01
<Blinny>
Didn't I just see a move from /opt/ltsp to /var/lib/ltsp ?
09:01
<ogra>
Guaraldo, ah, thats a mater of a screen script then
09:01
i thought you have a menu for local boots
09:01
<evarlast>
Blinny: only 1 machine? sounds like you need vmware, or at least vserver kernel
09:01
<Guaraldo>
ogra: Yep...
09:02
<Blinny>
evarlast: Thank you, no. I'm not running multiple OSs, and need every MB of RAM I have.
09:02
<ogra>
Blinny, thats an additional part so users dont need to rebuild the image for every change in lts.conf, the old path didnt change its just more work to use it
09:02
<Guaraldo>
No, ogra... all clients are diskless system... More than 1000... All them boot this dual screen script system...
09:02
<sbalneav>
Morning all
09:03
<Guaraldo>
Scotty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
09:03
<ogra>
Blinny, lts.conf from tftp will override the one in the chroot, but if you dont have it in the tftp dir the chroot one will be used
09:03
<evarlast>
Blinny: total bummer. ram is cheap :(
09:03
<Blinny>
ogra: Ah.
09:03
<ogra>
Guaraldo, i wonder how hard it would be to get your script into our ustream code
09:04
Blinny, we always kept beackwards compatoibility in lts.conf as much as we could
09:04
<Blinny>
ogra: I see your point re: file locations. LTSP isn't the only package on the machine though. Sometimes packages change locations. (the Fedora change from /usr/local/ to just /usr)
09:04
ogra: Right-O.
09:04
ogra: Hopefully the LTSP part of my eventual upgrade will be easy, then.
09:04
<ogra>
Blinny, the only massive difference wrt files is that since two years we dont use the evil nonstandard /tftpboot
09:05
<Guaraldo>
ogra: It means many alterations... I'm still trying to understand all the system... To much hacking...
09:05
<Blinny>
Yeh I never liked that.
09:05
<ogra>
the old location ?
09:05
<Guaraldo>
ogra: But very, very simple...
09:05
<Blinny>
Yeah. The one I'm using :P
09:05
<toresbe>
ogra: ...anything? :)
09:06
<ogra>

09:06* Guaraldo thinks that the simpliest solutions are the best!
