<markit>
hi alkisg :) long long time we don't meet in irc :) how are you? (I'm at school at the moment, updating a 12.04 to latest kde and libreoffice)
14:35
Phantomas: hi to you too :)
14:36
<Phantomas>
hey markit
14:36
<markit>
Phantomas: I've got your mail, but was too busy in updating school's PC so far ;P
14:36
Phantomas: hope your exams are doing well
14:37
<Phantomas>
yes, finishing in a few days :)
14:37
<markit>
we need a university graduated foss developer here ;P
14:37
<alkisg>
Hi markit, hi all :)
14:37
<markit>
Phantomas: autumn exams session?
14:38
<alkisg>
Long time no see indeed! How are you?
14:38
<markit>
alkisg: I've seen in greek repo (that I'm using) a more recent version of ltsp than the one included in 12.04
14:38
<Phantomas>
markit: Yes, repeats to exams i failed before or didn't go at all :P
14:38
<markit>
alkisg: well, I'm almost fine, family is ok, time is never enough as usual, list of "to do" longer and longer... what about you?
14:39freedomrun has left IRC (freedomrun!~freedomru@unaffiliated/freedomrun, Quit: So long and thanks for all the fish)
14:39
<alkisg>
markit: we needed that one because we're using ltsp-pnp, which we didn't implement before 12.04...
14:39
<markit>
alkisg: hope will do no harm to my "standard" ltsp installation, lol
14:39
<alkisg>
Mostly fine here... except that people are getting fired, or are working much more for much less money :)
14:40
<markit>
alkisg: oh, here is going to the same route :(
14:40
<alkisg>
You'll need to change your nbd config
14:40
<markit>
but we need to feed the megacorporations with more money, don't we? :)
14:40
<alkisg>
Because /opt/ltsp/i386 is used now instead of :ltsp_i386
14:40
Yeah :(
14:41
<markit>
argh, nbd config? I upgraded another school yesterday and was starting fine
14:41
<alkisg>
It'll break in the next ltsp-update-image or -kernels
14:41
<markit>
mmm don't even remember to have touch nbd
14:42
sorry to start boring you again (since long time), what file do I have to touch and what put there?
14:42
in chroot or in server?
14:43
<alkisg>
server, http://paste.debian.net/40694/
14:43
And then run ltsp-update-image
14:44
...so that TFT/pxelinux.cfg/default is regenerated
14:44
Hmm and I hope /etc/ltsp doesn't contain any old settings...
14:44
When I want to upgrade an installation from 12.04 to 12.10+ (like in our PPA), I usually purge ltsp, nbd etc, remove all /etc files, and install ltsp again
14:44
That way no manual changes are necessary
14:45
Remember to include the PPA to the chroot sources as well
14:45
<markit>
sure, chroot has the same ppa as server
14:47
in swap.conf Iì've also the line authfile = /etc/ltsp/nbd-server.allow
14:47
and in config I've user and group set, not commented out
14:48
except that, they are the same as yours (was using greek repo already)
14:48
do I have to fix those differences?
14:53
is it a good idea install linux-image-generic-lts-raring in chroot?
14:58
<alkisg>
markit: see the first line, that's the significant one
14:58
/etc/nbd-server/conf.d/ltsp_i386.conf:[/opt/ltsp/i386]
14:58
instead of /etc/nbd-server/conf.d/ltsp_i386.conf:[:ltsp_i386]
14:59
I'd advice to use linux-image-lts-raring and xserver-xorg-raring only if you have hardware that is not working with the older kernel
14:59
If so, it's a good idea, sure, otherwise you sometimes get broken vbox or samba or other packages that get fixed a bit later than in stock -precise...
15:03
<markit>
my /etc/nbd-server/conf.d/ltsp_i386.conf:[/opt/ltsp/i386] is already ok, so good :) thanks a lot
15:04
alkisg: is ltsp expanding in greek schools, or the UE has asked to install M$crap if you want them to lend you money?
15:05
here I'm fearing a lot "digital books" that are coming probably next year
15:05monkwitdafunk has left IRC (monkwitdafunk!~AndChat49@24.114.37.163, Ping timeout: 262 seconds)
15:06
<alkisg>
It's expanding, currently at 500+ schools
15:07
<markit>
alkisg: great! are you using -pnp for new installs? I've not fully got the role of -pnp for ltsp
15:07
an "easy version if you are not skilled" or "a future replacement"?
15:08
<alkisg>
The first one, but not only if you're not skilled
15:08
You setup a template classroom PC, with whatever you want, edu software, smartboard drivers...
15:08
And then just install sch-scripts and run ltsp-update-image -c /
15:09
That's all, so there are no console skills needed, and it's very easy to set up programs that only have GUI installers
15:09
(like the smartboard drivers, which can't easily be installed in chroots)
15:10
<markit>
why do you need smartboard drivers in chroot? ah, maybe you have teachers that use a fat client... mine so far work on the server
15:10
so it's easier for them turn it off by mistake ;P
15:10* markit has no skilled teachers... so sad situation
15:11
<alkisg>
ltsp-pnp and sch-scripts made ltsp installations so easy that even k6 teachers (no IT knowledge at all) install ltsp here...
15:12
It's not only smartboard drivers, there are many cases where chroots are hard even for skilled users
15:12
<markit>
they are no skilled in using BASIC programs and do trivial tasks
15:12
like copy files from usb key
15:12
etc.
15:12
are you (greek I mean) moving toward some "e-learning", remote lessons, recorded lessons put online, or something like that?
15:12
<alkisg>
E.g. grub doesn't work correctly in chroots, leaves the kernel in not-configured state, breaks apt-get forever (until someone very skilled solves the problem)
15:12lifeboy has left IRC (lifeboy!~roland@105-236-79-137.access.mtnbusiness.co.za, Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
15:12
<alkisg>
dkms doesn't work because of server/chroot kernel version mismatches, etc etc
15:13
<markit>
is grub needed in chroot?
15:13
<alkisg>
It gets installed in fat clients because of dependencies
15:13
<markit>
ok, but if it fails you don't mind, right?
15:13
<alkisg>
We're using moodle, mahara etc for that, but only for teacher seminars, they're rarely used in actual classrooms
15:14
You mind because then you can't install/upgrade anything, apt-get says "broken packages"
15:14
<markit>
I see... one teacher asked be about the possibility of recording his lesson and put online for students
15:14
<alkisg>
Google hangouts for that
15:14
<markit>
my teachers usually ask something "cool", difficoutl to impelemtn, and when they got it (and I wasted a lot of time) don't use it
15:14
<alkisg>
Instant recording, and even if you want it, live broadcasting through google servers
15:15
<markit>
reboot and test time, see you later, thanks a lot, hope to get in touch with you more frequently in the future :)
