hi, i know it may be a faq, but i can't find the answer: what's needed in the ltsp chroot so that setxkbmap works? it currently complains about "error loading new keyboard description"
06:33
nvm, found something in the wiki
06:34spectra has joined #ltsp

nope, copying /etc/X11/xkb from the server to the chroot does not have any effect

<vanya>
what do you think about http://usbip.sourceforge.net/ ? can't it be helpful for ltsp ?
07:08
<jammcq>
vanya: it's a cool idea, but the project is mostly dead
07:09
we played with it a bit, but it turns out to be really tricky to manage all of the USB devices of all of the thin clients
07:09
<vanya>
actually last news from there dated Mar 8, 2007
07:09
<jammcq>
usbip doesn't differentiate between users, so you just end up with lots of USB devices looking like they belong to the server
07:09
and even then, it doesn't help with cdroms and floppies
07:10
<vanya>
but it will help for plain thin clients that don't have those floppy and cdroms in them
07:10
just USB attached

<jammcq>
well, yer welcome to play with it. we looked at it, and decided it wouldn't work for us
07:11
<vanya>
and all the proccess is quite transparent
07:11
<jammcq>
I don't remember all the details
07:11
<vanya>
it's a pity
07:11Avatara has quit IRC
07:12
<jammcq>
sbalneav has a better memory for that sort of stuff. he actually had usbip working, and figured out where it was a problem
07:12
<vanya>
if the project is not dead we can cooperate with its authors..
07:12
<jammcq>
go for it
07:12
<vanya>
Idea is really interesting
07:12
I will check and tell you..
07:13

I know scott worked with the guy in Japan, and something just wasn't right

07:14
it's not dead!
07:15

ok, you don't need to convince me

07:15
<jammcq>
go ahead and make it work, and let us know how it goes
07:15

sbalneav, Good morning to you! jammcq advised me to ask you about the http://usbip.sourceforge.net/ . What were the main reasons to not use it?
08:50
<sbalneav>
vanya: heh
08:50
Looks like it's just started up again.
08:51
For a long time, since 2004, it had sat idle, and didn't work with any kernel past about 2.6.8
08:51
<jammcq>
!s
08:52
<ltspbot>
jammcq: "s" is Scotty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
08:52
<sbalneav>
For us, the big reason was, it wasn't in any mainline kernel, so it would mean us having to support helping people compile custom kernel modules
08:52
Morning jammcq
08:52
got my invite yesterday!
08:52
<cliebow_>
wonder how it fared when you ripped a usb device out on the sly

<cliebow_>
Cool!..now i friends in hot places
08:54
<vanya>
cliebow, you mean what happens, when user just unplug USB stick? same thing if you unplug it locally on server
08:55
sbalneav, it is still not in mainline, but main developer said he is still interested in project right now and searching for somebody to drive the project
08:55
they also say that that stuff works on 2.6.18 kernel
08:55* jammcq thinks vanya could drive it
08:56
<vanya>
I don't have the required skills
08:56
for this
08:58
<jammcq>
there's no better way to acquire them
08:59
<vanya>
I adviced him to write to ltsp mail list and seek for help there. maybe there will be someone interested to help in this project, don't you think?
08:59
<sbalneav>
I think it's a great project, and if it became part of the mainline linux kernel, and became part of the distro's packages, I think it would be a FANTASTIC way to get whacky things like webcams, palms, etc going on LTSP.
09:01
<vanya>
I think so too
09:02
but Takahiro Hirofuchi needs help in this project..
09:03
USB devices will be totally transparent this way..

sh3mh4mf0r4sh: and you'll also need to set icewm as the default xsession and/or window manager
10:05
sh3mh4mf0r4sh: or the user selects it each time. you should probably just try it out first and see if it significantly improves the speed
10:05

hey cliebow_!!!!!

anyone in here? I'm going to be travelling soon....curious as to if anyone has ever used a Nokia 770 or 800 Internet Tablet (Linux PDA)
17:48
My wife has given me the green light :-)
17:49
<neuralis>
i have the 800
17:49
any particular questions?
17:50
<dtrask>
Cool! Tell me your thoughts on it...what does it do...etc....I remember a lot of the guys at UDS Mtn. View had them....I'm looking at one for May
17:50
I want to travel lighter....my PC is a beast...very heavy
17:50
<neuralis>
this is _far_ from an adequate pc replacement
17:51
the only good use i've found for it is keeping it on the coffee table in the living room, for when i want to look something up quickly but don't want to get up and go to my computer to use my laptop
17:51
<dtrask>
Oh I know...I'm looking at it from a email, web, possible VOIP device
17:51
<neuralis>
voip works fine, the built-in camera is craptastic
17:51
web is decent
17:51
haven't tried email, but gmail works fine
17:51
<dtrask>
what does it use for internet calling? aka VOIP
17:52
<neuralis>
it ships with a google talk client
17:52
<dtrask>
I want my gmail and google calendar
17:52
<neuralis>
that'd work fine
17:52
<dtrask>
does it work with Skype? or perhaps Wengo or Gizmo?
17:52
<neuralis>
oh, another neat thing i can do with it is put it on top of my stereo, hook it up, run mpd, and then control the music playing on the stereo wirelessly
17:52
<dtrask>
:-) That's cool
17:53
<neuralis>
(an expensive version of what apple access points do already)
17:53
<dtrask>
yeah
17:53
<neuralis>
skype won't work OOB, it's not x86
17:54
gizmo apparently works
17:54
and skype is apparently working on a version for the 800
17:54
<dtrask>
my dilemma is that I have my Ubuntu PC....very heavy HP ZV5000...P4 beast with about 20 mins battery life....or my Mac...which is running OS X for school with Ubuntu in Parallels....I'd fell like I'm cheating ;-)
17:54
<neuralis>
see http://gigaom.com/2007/03/21/nokia-n800/
17:55
there are plenty of very lightweight normal subnotebooks nowadays, btw
17:55
<dtrask>
huh....says they have a Gizmo client....Gizmo is cool...not quite the firewall puncher that skype is, but close
17:56
yeah....like I said...my wife gave me the green light, but price is an issue
17:56
LOl
17:56
<neuralis>
frankly, i'd recommend a decent subnotebook and the nokia e70 as a phone
17:56
<dtrask>
which would you pick....770 or 800
17:57
any sub-notebooks in the less than $500 US range?
17:57
<neuralis>
yeah, http://laptop.org ;)
17:58
<dtrask>
hah! Good one....made me look!
17:58
got any spares I can use?
17:58
I actually played with the interface in VMWare a few weeks back....very nicely done.
17:58
<neuralis>
it has a long way to go
17:58
the stuff that's there now is in pre-alpha
17:59
re: cheaper subnotebooks, scour ebay a bit
17:59
<dtrask>
Showed it to my 4th grade students....they were pretty excited...too bad Maine isn't quite a third world country
17:59
<neuralis>
you can usually find older thinkpads for pretty cheap prices
17:59
<dtrask>
I may...thought about ebay
18:00
Know of any notebooks with enough battery life to get from JFK to Seville? LOL
18:00
besides a pocketful of batteries
18:01
Actually I'd be coming from Portland Maine, but the first leg I can do without ;-)

<neuralis>
how long is the flight?
18:02
<dtrask>
7 hours or so
18:02
I think without looking again
18:02
<neuralis>
there are thinkpads with external batteries that can handle that
18:02
also hps
18:02
i think macbooks, too
18:02
<dtrask>
You going to UDS?
18:02
in May?
18:02
<neuralis>
nope, way too busy
18:02
alas
18:02
<dtrask>
we'll miss you
18:03
<whiprush>
an older X series thinkpad with the wedge battery and an extended battery can do 10 hours.

<dtrask>
ooh! wedge battery....is that the one that tips it up and puts it in a better position for keyboarding?
18:04
<whiprush>
yep
18:04
<rpetre>
sorry to bother, can i drop a question about keymaps?
18:04
<dtrask>
go for it rpetre
18:04
<rpetre>
i can't make setxkbmap work on the terminal, however i try
18:04
<dtrask>
neuralis: when you say the camera is crap....you talking about video conferencing...etc?
18:05
on the 800
18:05
<rpetre>
anybody here uses multiple keymaps?
18:05
<dtrask>
rpetre: not me...sorry
18:05
<neuralis>
dtrask: low resolution, generally lots of artifacts
18:05
<rpetre>
it seems the X server on the terminal does not know about the keymap
18:06
<dtrask>
neuralis: ahhh....does it do stills or record to memory for sharing? Just curios
18:06
curious
18:06
(sp)....hey....I'm a teacher
18:06
<neuralis>
it probably does, i haven't tried
18:06
there's no reason why it wouldn't do stills, though
18:07
<dtrask>
hows the wireless....pretty strong or do I have to be standing under the access point?
18:08
<rpetre>
also, ctrl-alt-f2 stopped working at some point, can't say why (i do have a shell on vt2, i checked)
18:08
<dtrask>
I would also use it for remote server management when I'm out of the school....just ssh in...use a couple of commands and "do stuff"
