14:40* Gadi grumbles about how horribly broken rdesktop is ....
14:40
<vagrantc>
Gadi: awww.
14:41
good thing you're our resident expert! :)
14:41
<Gadi>
I know, I know - u could care less
14:41
:)
14:41
Im not talking about ltsp's screen scripts - Im talking about things like seamlessrdp
14:41
that are supposed to work but don't
14:41
<vagrantc>
well, it actually seems like a common use-case for ltsp... as bizarre as it may be. so it is important.
14:42Daviey has left #ltsp
14:42
<Gadi>
well, rdesktop keeps falling behind features introduced by newer versions of rdp, too
14:42
so, it just makes things more broken as time goes on
14:42
<vagrantc>
right, which is part of the difficulty keeping up with an intentionally moving target
14:44
<Gadi>
hehe - not like the various OSS projects keep up with each other
14:45
<vagrantc>
well, that's unintentionally moving targets
14:45
eternalIncompatibilityKit
14:50
<Gadi>
well, with seamlessRDP broken, on to find a planB for launching windows apps from a WTS as an icon on a Linux desktop....
14:50
:P
14:57
<nubae_>
oh Gadi.... those sbs things finally arrived at Guadalinex R and D
14:57
hehehe
14:58
4 months late, but they are there now
14:59
<Gadi>
ur kidding me
14:59
lol
14:59
<nubae_>
how would one go about testing the control panel aspect of them if there is such a thing
14:59
<Gadi>
well, has the opportunity past by us already?
14:59
*passed
14:59
<nubae_>
heh, I had one sent to me personally so I can make sure it actually gets tested
14:59
no not at all
15:00
they are just a but clueless as to what to do with them
15:00
So I need to write up a report about how they can fit in their existing infrastructure
15:00
<Gadi>
ah, ok
15:01
<vagrantc>
sbs things?
15:01
<Gadi>
do you have them now or are they on their way to your place?
15:01
<nubae_>
also, I'll make sure one of them makes its way up to Linex in extremadura, where they already have existing ltsp on all their servers and are much more likely to make a deal quickly with ya
15:02
nope, I have one right here... looking at it right now, nice printing :-) and logo
15:02
<Gadi>
hehe
15:02

vagrantc: Symbiont Boot Stick
15:03
(SBS)
15:03
<vagrantc>
ah!
15:03
<nubae_>
I started it up and saw the various options but of course, without a server to control/set them up in some way they seem quite useless
15:03
<Gadi>
nubae_: nah - its all self-contained
15:03
it should boot up to a configuration wizard
15:03
<nubae_>
ok, tell me mor
15:04
or show me the way to the yellow brick road
15:04
<Gadi>
hehe
15:04
<nubae_>
hmmm, I say no config wizard.... but I booted straight from the stick on a laptop
15:04
should I be putting it in an already linux installed machine?
15:05
<Gadi>
no - just boot from USB
15:05pmatulis has quit IRC
15:05
<nubae_>
ok, I shall try again, and since u are around iI'll ask questions as it boots
15:05
if thats ok
15:05
<Gadi>
sure - do you want to priv msg me?
15:05
its a bit off topic from #ltsp
15:09
<nubae_>
sure thing
15:09
<_UsUrPeR_>
hey all
15:09
can somebody tell me what would be the cause of a message which says "unable to mount /cow"? It seems to result in LDM not coming up on clients.
15:10
<Gadi>
_UsUrPeR_: is that the only mount it cannot mount?
15:11
<vagrantc>
_UsUrPeR_: well, /cow and /rofs are merged together to create / using aufs ... /cow is the coyp-on-write part of it
15:11
<Gadi>
mooo
15:11
<vagrantc>
apt-get moo
15:11
<_UsUrPeR_>
gadi/vagrantc: I'm going to install openssh-server on a client to get to the bottom of this
15:11
:)
15:11
<Gadi>
_UsUrPeR_: that may be too late
15:12
_UsUrPeR_: is that the only mount error?
15:12
<_UsUrPeR_>
it's weird. This is an intermittant occurence
15:12
this happens about 50% of the time
15:12
the other half of the time, the clients boot properly
15:12
to an LDM screen
15:13
<vagrantc>
crazy people and their crazy broken setups
15:13
<_UsUrPeR_>
you got me. I'm totally crazy ;)
15:14
<Gadi>
_UsUrPeR_: if that is the only error you get, then it is a problem in initramfs. If it is the unharmful mountall errors, then it is not the source of ur problem
15:14
<_UsUrPeR_>
Gadi: ok. I'm rebuilding right now with openssh-server on the client so I can take a look at it's logs
15:15
<Gadi>
_UsUrPeR_: if the prob is ini initramfs, ssh will not be running yet
15:15
<_UsUrPeR_>
hmm
15:15
it seems to be getting to a login prompt. just no LDM
15:15
<Gadi>
do you drop to an initrmafs shell?
15:15
ah
15:15
ok
15:16
then, it may be the mountall issue
15:16
that isnt really an issue
15:18
<alkisg>
Yey! vinagre finally got reverse connection support! Now if only vino-server got a -connect parameter, we could help people behind firewalls without installing anything...
15:22
Uh, not much hope there, it's been filed since 2006... :-/ https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=389646
15:35
<Gadi>
2006 seems to be the hey day for OSS developers actually fixing and testing for bugs
15:35
:)
15:35
I think by 2007, they were all on to other projects
15:35
:P

<_UsUrPeR_>
Gadi / vagrantc: ok, here's the errors being received on the client when it fails to boot: http://pastebin.com/66jaZzpH
15:41
like I said, it's strangely intermittant
15:41
also, I can't seem to pull up a shell even though I have screen_02 = shell
15:42
it just gives me a blank screen with the blinking curser
15:43
Gadi: I was mistaken, it's not getting to a login prompt
15:43
Gadi: which you said is a problem with initramfs?
15:47
<Gadi>
_UsUrPeR_: those errors are all mountall errors which can be ignored
15:47
mountall had an issue where it produced those errors if /etc/mtab was a read-only symlink to /proc/mounts
15:48
we added a workaround for Ubuntu NBD connections in the latest upstream and I filed a bug with mountall
15:48
<_UsUrPeR_>
ok, that's fine
15:48
<Gadi>
I think they may have fixed it
15:48
<_UsUrPeR_>
hmm. I am thinking this may be a network error
15:48
it's weird how it's intermittent though
15:53
Gadi: ok, removed client from switch and plugged directly into server. same issue.
15:54
any suggestions? :P
15:55
<Gadi>
_UsUrPeR_: were you able to ssh in?
15:55
<_UsUrPeR_>
Gadi: negative. I was mistaken. there is no login prompt
15:55
it does not start SSH
15:55
it's "too early" like you had said
15:55
<Gadi>
hmm... weird - because mountall is in the OS after the initramfs
15:56
what version of LTSP are you on?
15:56
<_UsUrPeR_>
9.10 running ltsp-server installed about 3 days ago from a normal apt-get
15:57
<Gadi>

<kusznir>
Hi all: I'm setting up my ubuntu 9.10 ltsp server (migrating from a 9.04 / old hardware). For the transition period, I wanted to include ssh keys and config so users could select either ltsp host (old or new).
16:20
To that end, I exported my sshkey from my old server, created /etc/ltsp/ on my new server, copied the key over, and ran ltsp-update-sshkey, but it didn't import the key to /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts. Did something change, or did I mess something up?
16:25
<alkisg>
kusznir: how are your users select either server?

Hello. Is getting 140 stations running on one server doable/advisable? Usage would only be for basic web browsing (shouldn't be using flash, intesive javascript, etc) and shell applications.
18:21
<Appiah>
sure
18:21
just get the hardware for that..
18:24
<Lns>
loomis53, that's stretching it...but if you're serious that they're not doing flash/java/etc... and your server hardware is good enough, I guess it'd be possible
18:24
<loomis53>
i guess that's my issue. no experience to know how much processing power I need.
18:24
<Lns>
You'll probably want at least 2 realistically though
18:25
what was that formula...
18:25
!server
18:25
<ltspbot`>
Lns: hubbard.freenode.net
18:25
<Lns>
!serverspec
18:25
<ltspbot`>
Lns: Error: "serverspec" is not a valid command.
18:25
<Lns>
hrm
18:27
<loomis53>
right, I'd rather two for redundancy. I'm just looking to see how much I could realisticly get out of a single server.
18:27
<Lns>
loomis53, what's the environment ?
18:28
<loomis53>
the environment is a mix matched mess right now :)
18:28
<Lns>
Personally, with general web/email/office usage I wouldn't go above 50 per server, but that's just me..one server being, say, a 2x quadcore 3.0GHz Xeon w/6-8GB RAM each
18:28
and obviously at *least* one 1Gbit/sec NIC...2 or more bonded together preferably
18:29
just depends on the usage (they ALL on and being used at the same time?) and stuff like that
18:29
<loomis53>
our file server is a novell 4.11. the end user would just be using a single low demanding shell app or lightweight web app
18:30
<Lns>
so you could get away with a minimal/no graphical environment almost
18:30
<loomis53>
right
18:30
<Lns>
well 140 might not be out of the question then
18:30
given the specs i put up above
18:30
<loomis53>
it's a call center, doing out bound market research surveys
18:31
<Lns>
but obviously you'll want to test and not put yourself in a situation where it's going to kill you if it doesn't work :)
18:31
gotcha
18:32
i got to jet, sorry couldn't stay longer
18:32
<loomis53>
right. if we go this route, it would probably be half the stations to start, and i'd setup a test environment before that.
18:32
np, thanks for the advice!
18:32
<Lns>
good luck!
