<dgroos>
Howdy!
01:52
Anyone have a recommended flavor of ubuntu 14.04 ltsp-pnp for a classroom? I’d prefer gnome as I’m familiar with that but if something is a good bit better I’ll branch out!
01:52
I’ll be doing fat clients with pretty good clients

<vagrantc>
alkisg: yay!
03:26
<alkisg>
vagrantc: I'm still worried about if it'll work fine with 32/64 bit. I can also create a small program that will show the various datatype sizes in those ARCHes, if we want to ...verify whether there are problems in a more "official" way
03:28
<vagrantc>
alkisg: well, i can test on i386, amd64, armel, armhf ... that's all I care about, really.
03:28
<alkisg>
If it works there, it should work in general
03:32
<vagrantc>
hrm.
03:32
either i'm not actually applying the patch, or it's still producing warnings.
03:33
<alkisg>
vagrantc: after applying the patch, there should be no local variables f_type, f_bsize, f_namelen
03:33
<vagrantc>
alkisg: it's still issuing the incompatible pointer type warnings:
03:34
<alkisg>
So it shouldn't be possible to get warnings about them
03:34
<vagrantc>
ltspfs.c: In function 'ltspfs_statfs':
03:34
ltspfs.c:907:5: warning: passing argument 2 of 'xdr_int' from incompatible pointer type xdr_int(&in, &stbuf->f_type); /* type of fs */
03:34
<alkisg>
Right, that's a new one, isn't it?
03:34
The old one was about uninitialized variables...
03:34
<vagrantc>
right
03:35
<alkisg>
Is that warning on 64bit machine?
03:35
<vagrantc>
yes.
03:35
lemme build on i386
03:38
alkisg: i386 builds without errors.
03:38
<alkisg>
vagrantc: that's why sbalneav resorted to using local variables
03:38
But his implementation relies on undocumented features
03:39
So while I can easily send another patch that would work, I don't think it's the right way to do it, give me some minutes to search for another way...
03:40
<vagrantc>
i think this has been broken for nearly 3 years ... how did we not notice this?
03:40* alkisg doesn't build ltspfs locally, and even if I did, I wouldn't notice the warnings...
03:41
<vagrantc>
well, the warnings are new
03:41
the fact that the filesystem size reporting has been broken... has been for quite some time...
03:42
it's been building without errors the last 3 years, but has some pretty use-visible issues.
03:42
user-visible
04:04honey has joined IRC (honey!caa43575@gateway/web/freenode/ip.202.164.53.117)
04:04
<alkisg>
vagrantc: before applying r170, when it showed "the wrong partition size", was that size random?
04:04honey is now known as Guest21818
04:05
<Guest21818>
Which is the best Linux distro to implement ltsp?
04:06
we have 200 thin-clients and 4 servers
04:07dgroos has left IRC (dgroos!~dgroos@mail.troop187.org, Quit: dgroos)
04:08
<alkisg>
ubuntu, debian, opensuse...
04:09
<Guest21818>
version? latest or some old like the official docs points to ubuntu-9.04
04:10
<alkisg>
Give thin client specs, ram, cpu, vga
04:11
<Guest21818>
800mhz processor and 512 or less ram for some
04:11
<alkisg>
which graphics card specifically? does it use XAA?
04:11
<Guest21818>
let me check
04:12
<alkisg>
vagrantc: can you try this one? http://paste.ubuntu.com/8059717/
04:12
Not only if it compiles, but also if it shows the correct results too
04:13
vagrantc: sorry, wait, forgot to save...
04:14
vagrantc: this one: http://paste.ubuntu.com/8059744/
04:15
<Guest21818>
right now not able to boot it. I was trying to make it work with Rocks cluster. Looking over internet for the model it is "HP vc 4725 LNX 512/512R TC INDIA"
04:16
<vagrantc>
alkisg: pretty randomish sizes, yeah. two runs of df would produce different output
04:17
will try 8059744
04:17
<alkisg>
Thanks
04:18
-> instead of .
04:18
<vagrantc>
alkisg: that's on ltspfs-trunk, not on top of the old patch, right?
04:18
<alkisg>
On trunk
04:19
I have 3 errors in ltspfs.c,
04:19
stbuf->f_type = (__SWORD_TYPE) f_type;
04:19
I'm using . there instead of -> in 3 lines
04:19
Either do it manually or wait for an updated diff...
04:20
vagrantc: http://paste.ubuntu.com/8059801/
04:22
<Guest21818>
alkisq: I got exact here. http://www.byteboss.com/view.aspx?id=734730&name=thin+client
04:22
<alkisg>
Guest21818: that doesn't tell me the graphics card
04:23
<Guest21818>
ok let me go more deep
04:26
alkisq:ok got it what you wanted. http://goo.gl/iKnySq
04:29
<vagrantc>
alkisg: i386 built without errors... trying amd64
04:29
<alkisg>
vagrantc: do also check if it works though
04:29
Guest21818: try with the latest cd
04:29
<vagrantc>
alkisg: 64-bit too ... installing...
04:31
<Guest21818>
ok Thanks. :)
04:37
<vagrantc>
alkisg: 32-bit client, 64-bit server working well!
04:37
<alkisg>
Cool, I think it should work everywhere then
04:41
<vagrantc>
alkisg: you want to commit that, then?
04:41
alkisg: or would you like me to?
04:41
<alkisg>
Please do so :)
04:42
The problem with r153 was that Scotty confused the in/out streams
04:42
And r170 just tried to revert r153...
04:45
<vagrantc>
but it seems to be working nicely now.
04:45* vagrantc would really like to figure out a mount/umount helper thing
04:46
<vagrantc>
essentially, lbmount can now be used to create /media/USERNAME
04:46
owned by USER
04:46
the old code did require there to actually be a successful ltspfs mount before you could usefully use lbmount
04:47
so that's the one feature lack...
04:47
but it's hugely simpler code.
04:48
i've sort of wondered if some of the code in ltspfsmounter wouldn't be better placed in a mount/umount helper anyways.
04:48
alkisg: thanks so much for that patch, though!
04:48
now i just gotta figure out what breaks ltspfsd when run from udev when systemd is init
04:48
<alkisg>
You're welcome, sorry for my lack of interest in ltspfs but we're not using it here at all...
04:49
<vagrantc>
even greater thanks, then!
04:49
do you actually disable localdev?
04:51
<alkisg>
No, but usually students give their USB sticks to the teacher to put them on the server
04:54
<vagrantc>
so conceptually, they could use it, they just don't?
04:54
<alkisg>
Yup
04:54
<vagrantc>
heh
04:55
<alkisg>
(just a note for the logs: I think the best way to solve the 32/64 issue would be to implement an xdr_swordtype(XDR *xdrs, __SWORD_TYPE *sp); function locally, with an #if __WORDSIZE == 32 call xdr_int(), else call xdr_long() in its implementation)
04:57
Or a plain #define xdr_swordtype instead of a function...
05:03* vagrantc tries a build for wheezy-backports and sid-armhf
05:11
<vagrantc>
backport works fine at least for the client-side.
05:22
<alkisg>
vagrantc: on non-i386 builds, could we run a sed 's/i386/<ARCH>/' -i ltsp-server-dnsmasq.conf at build time?
05:24
<vagrantc>
alkisg: it's an arch:all package, so no.
05:24
<alkisg>
Hrm... ah, we can do it from ltsp-config
05:24
<vagrantc>
right
05:25
ltsp-config could also detect what images/chroots are available, instead of assuming one or the other.
05:25
er, assuming the host arch.
05:26
<alkisg>
And fall back to the host arch if none exist yet, ok
05:26
<vagrantc>
right.
05:26
and prefer host arch if multiple exist?
05:26
<alkisg>
Too complicated, I'd go with the first one found
05:27
...but yeah you're right it would be preferred
05:27* alkisg wants to commit this one: http://paste.ubuntu.com/8060144/
05:27
<alkisg>
I think vendor:pxe there is wrong
05:28
And also add an example line for option:router
05:29
<vagrantc>
alkisg: dhcp-vendorclass=pxe,PXEClient
05:29
alkisg: i think that might set vendor:pxe appropriately.
05:29
<alkisg>
I don't think so
05:29
I think it sets a tag
05:29
Not the vendor
05:30
So it would match tag:pxe, but not vendor:pxe
05:30
<vagrantc>
so maybe it should be tag:pxe ?
05:30
<alkisg>
I think it doesn't accept tags there, so it's a syntax error
05:30
<vagrantc>
er, net:pxe ?
05:30
ah.
05:31
<alkisg>
net: is the old name for tag:
05:31
Since wheezy and on, tag: is preferred
05:33
From the dnsmasq man page: for instance --dhcp-option=vendor:PXEClient,1,0.0.0.0 sends the encapsulated vendor class-specific option "mftp-address=0.0.0.0" to any client whose vendor-class matches "PXE Client".
05:33
<vagrantc>
should update that, then, too
05:34
<alkisg>
in short, set:xxx replaces net:xxx, and tag:xxx replaces xxx
05:37
<vagrantc>
hrm?
05:37
i guess i'm not attached, as long as it works as far back as wheezy :)
05:37
<alkisg>
dhcp-vendorclass=etherboot,Etherboot
05:37
becomes
05:37
dhcp-vendorclass=set:etherboot,Etherboot
05:38
and
05:38
dhcp-boot=net:pxe,/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0
05:38
becomes
05:38
dhcp-boot=tag:pxe,/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0
05:38
<vagrantc>
got it
05:38
a little more explicit, a little more generic terms
05:39
ok, so my new mount-in-media code doesn't cleanup as well if the mounts failed
05:41
because it pretty much relies on /proc/mounts for what to even try to remove
05:41
that's pretty easy to fix, though
05:47* alkisg waves

I have Googled it but all inks are non-working and 3-4 years old

or I should compile from source? https://launchpad.net/ltsp-cluster/+download

alkisq: I am trying ro install LTSP on Rocks. Please tell me for which code/Package I have to check?
10:43
rocks cluster http://www.rocksclusters.org/wordpress/
10:43
<alkisg>
Guest40408: first, [tab] autocompletes usernames here in IRC, so that you don't type them wrong
10:44
Second, it's best if you select some user name so that we remember you in later chats
10:44
type: /nick your_user_name
10:44
And third, you should ask the people in your distribution if they support ltsp, not the opposite...
10:44
I think some people run ltsp on centos
10:45
<Guest40408>
ok I am sorry, i am using IRC almost first time
10:45
<alkisg>
I don't know if they have packages for that
10:45
<Guest40408>
so I have to compile from source?
10:45
<alkisg>
No idea, I don't know that distribution
10:45
You should ask them...
10:46
<Guest40408>
ok. who are they?
10:46
<alkisg>
I don't know, you mentioned them, not me
10:46
http://www.rocksclusters.org/wordpress/
10:46
<Guest40408>
They are not using ltsp
10:46
<alkisg>
Are they *providing* ltsp?
10:47
Distros do not "use" packages, they provide packages in repositories
10:47
<Guest40408>
I am going to some development :)
10:47
no, they don't provide
10:47
<alkisg>
Are they using abiword?
10:47
Are they providing abiword?
10:47
The answers there may be "no" and "yes"
10:47
<Guest40408>
let me check
10:47
<alkisg>
Same with ltsp
10:48
Is distro X using LTSP? No
10:48
Is distro X providing LTSP? Yes
10:48
You should ask that distro if they provide ltsp in their repositories...
10:48
<Guest40408>
But i can compile ltsp from source on any distro. NO?
10:50
<alkisg>
No
10:50
It requires integration with that distribution
10:50
Services, hooks etc
10:50
So, you can compile it but you'd also need to integrate it before it works
10:51
People have ran ltsp on centos so that's a good sign
10:51
<Guest40408>
ok then how should I use this? http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Packaging
10:51
<alkisg>
Did you check the distro repositories first?
10:51
<Guest40408>
no i did not
10:51
<alkisg>
Right, that's what I suggested to do first
10:52
If it's packaged, why would you want to re-package it?
10:52
<Guest40408>
ok I think i have to add some centos repositories on Rocks?
10:53
<alkisg>
No idea, you should ask that to your distribution support channels
10:53
<Guest40408>
ok.
10:54
<alkisg>
This mentions some things, but again, no idea from me, I'm using apt, not yum: http://www.rocksclusters.org/roll-documentation/base/5.5/update.html

dgroos: here I adviced schools to stick with 12.04 because there are drawbacks in 14.04, and no visible benefits...
15:11
Use google translate on that: http://alkisg.mysch.gr/steki/index.php?topic=5857.msg66678#msg66678
15:11
<dgroos>
alkisg: ahh, well that’s cool because it saves me time :)
15:12
<alkisg>
With the linux-image-generic-lts-trusty kernel, the newer hardware is supported, and xorg dropped XAA-based cards, and gnome broke keyboard layout switching in SDL, and gnome-flashback has multiple issues in 14.04...
15:16
<dgroos>
This is what I had hoped to hear. Will there be possible issues with any programs that do work on 12.04 if I update to the new kernal?
15:18
oh! brb
15:31
<alkisg>
I don't think (regular) programs depend on the kernel version
15:31
But don't update to the newer xorg without considering it first
15:38
<dgroos>
alkisg: would one have to update xorg explicitly or might it happen as part of a kernal update, accidental-like.
15:39
Also, mind if I copy/paste this dialog to answer the question I posted to edubuntu-users email list about 5 seconds (literally) before you came on line, here?
15:48
<alkisg>
dgroos: to get the hwe kernel/xorg, you'd give: sudo apt-get install --purge linux-generic-lts-trusty xserver-xorg-lts-trusty
15:48
Without the xserver-xorg-lts-trusty part, you'd only update the kernel
15:49
So if you don't have any issues at all, just do nothing. If you have very new clients and experience issues, install the trusty kernel. If the issues persist, try with the newer xorg too.
15:49
Sure, feel free to copy/paste the dialog
15:50
<dgroos>
like… sudo apt-get install --purge linux-generic-lts-trusty
15:50
OK sounds like good strategy
15:50
will wait.
