02:32
<highvoltage>
hi vagrantc!
02:33
vagrantc: holger sponsored my upload
02:33
<vagrantc>
highvoltage: cool! see you've already got a new bug! :)
02:33
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: I was wondering, shouldn't ldm-themes be installed by default so that people get the Joy theme?
02:33
vagrantc: oh? I've missed that somehow (oops)
02:34
<vagrantc>
highvoltage: i was thinking about that earlier today
02:34
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: ah, I see it
02:34
vagrantc: I'll have that fixed tomorrow
02:34
<vagrantc>
highvoltage: i don't want to make it a recommends on ltsp-client- that just seems too strong a relationship ... i guess it could be installed as part of ltsp-build-client
02:35
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: *nod* yes it's nice to have it optional
02:35
<vagrantc>
recommends is optional, but kind of annoying
02:35
<highvoltage>
ah I see what you mean
02:36
so do you mean ltsp-build-client would install it by default, or that a user would specify it with extra-packages?
02:36
<vagrantc>
currently, a user would have to manually install it ...
02:37
which makes it practically invisible.
02:38
it adds 36MB to the install size of the chroot (which would probably compress pretty well witth squashfs)
02:39telex has left IRC (telex!~telex@freeshell.de, Remote host closed the connection)
02:39
<vagrantc>
oh, it's that stupid murrine-themes recommends.
02:40
yeah, it'd be tiny without murrine-themes
02:40
the difference between 1MB of extra install and 30MB...
02:41
highvoltage: so i guess that's holding me back ... if we could rewrite the theme to something with a smaller depends/recommends chain, i'd be more inclined to include it by default.
02:42
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: should I drop the murrine-themes recommends? in ubuntu we usually don't install recommends by default in the chroot
02:43
<vagrantc>
highvoltage: it's gtk2-engines-murrine that recommnds murrine-themes, and the maintainer refuses to consider the request to downgrade it
02:43
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: ok, I remember the packager of murrine themes was a bit reluctant before... but I think we can make a good case (he'll eventually get tired of us)
02:43
<vagrantc>
highvoltage: it's gtk2-engines-murrine that recommnds murrine-themes, and the maintainer refuses to consider the request to downgrade it
02:44
i think it's completely backwards to have an engine recommend a particular theme
02:44
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: did he give any kind of reason?
02:44
yes, indeed.
02:45
if it blocks the Joy theme from being default in Wheezy, can't it be marked an RC bug? :)
02:46
<vagrantc>
highvoltage: see if you can find a reason: http://bugs.debian.org/623783
02:49
highvoltage: i tried to reopen the issue again, and the response was just irritated
02:51
highvoltage: ok, so ltsp-build-client could install the theme special-cased with --no-install-recommends
02:51
or find some other engine
02:51
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: thanks, I'll reply to that bug sometime, do you know if corsac will be at debconf?
02:51
<vagrantc>
it seems stupid to have to work around an inappropriate recommends.
02:52
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: ah yeah indeed
02:52
<vagrantc>
highvoltage: don't know
02:52
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: or we could just have an ldm gtk theme?
02:52
<vagrantc>
given the attitude, i'd rather find another engine
02:52
<highvoltage>
*nod*
02:55
<vagrantc>
ugh... we'd have to manually: apt-get install --no-install-recommends ldm-themes gtk2-engines-murrine
02:56
or do evil like Provides: murrine-themees
02:56
from ldm-themes
02:59
<highvoltage>
yeah the --no-install-recommends does look less evil than the provides: hack.
02:59
but I guess if that becomes a necessary evil then I guess I'd explain it in some BUGS file or something
03:00
(sorry I'm really just babbling now)
03:00
<vagrantc>
or do apt-get install --no-install-recommends ldm-themes (with Depends: gtk2-engines-murrine instead of a recommends)
03:00
<highvoltage>
ah yes
03:01
<vagrantc>
that but really, meh.
03:01
oops.
03:01
the "meh." was genuine, though.
03:01
<highvoltage>
heh
03:04* vagrantc mumbles something about gtk3
03:21* highvoltage mumbles something too but it doesn't make any sense to anyone
03:43
<highvoltage>
goodnight, #ltsp :)
03:44
<vagrantc>

09:58
<Hyperbyte>
mhmmm
09:59
<ball>
I'm intrigued as to how xdcmp gets configured
09:59
I'll probably try it with the Xubuntu Alternate install disc
09:59
<alkisg>
xdmcp is just a lightdm.conf line away
10:00
But it doesn't offer anything that ltsp doesn't
10:01
<ball>
Wouldn't xdmcp be a component part of ltsp?
10:01
I didn't know lightdm could do xdcmp
10:02
<alkisg>
xdmcp is insecure, the username/password are unencrypted
10:02* ball nods
10:02
<alkisg>
LDM_DIRECTX=true offers the same speed as XDMCP, with username/pass encrypted over ssh, and with optional sound
10:02
So there's absolutely no reason to use XDMCP in an LTSP installation
10:02* ball writes that down
10:03
<alkisg>
Although, I think there's a SCREEN_07=xdmcp screen script
10:03
So if one really needs that (maybe to connect to another, non ltsp server), it's still there

Hyperbyte: fedora: LTSP for Fedora is maintained by the K12Linux project. Currently support only goes as far as Fedora 12. An LTSP version for RedHat EL6 and possibly Fedora 14 is in development. https://fedorahosted.org/k12linux/
12:33
<Hyperbyte>
If there is an LTSP for CentOS 5, it's gonna be there.
12:33
But AFAIK, it's only available for CentOS 6.
12:34
<kingjs>

But understand that there's no "packages" for LTSP (technically there are, but in practice, that's not how LTSP works)
12:36
LTSP is included with certain distros.
12:36
Like Ubuntu, Debian, OpenSUSE, Gentoo...

12:36
<Hyperbyte>
Fedora and RHEL used to have kickass support for LTSP, but recently it's not been much.
12:38
The previous maintainer for Fedora/RHEL (Warren Togami) has made an LTSP version compatible with Fedora 14 and CentOS/RHEL 6
12:38
<kingjs>
any command line utilities for ltsp
12:38
<Hyperbyte>
I did - https://fedorahosted.org/k12linux/
12:39
<kingjs>
where can i find the RHEL/CentOS 6 compatible LTSP
12:39
<Hyperbyte>
Everything that's there, is everything there is on LTSP for CentOS.
12:40
LTSP for different distros is managed by different people. The main LTSP branch is tested by the developers mainly on Debian and Ubuntu. The other versions are not made by the LTSP developers. You'll find people in this channel know very little about them.
12:40
<kingjs>
ok
12:40
should i download and install k12linux on the server?
12:41
<Hyperbyte>
Warren Togami maintains K12Linux. I know they have a mailing list where you can ask questions, and I know there's some info on that site... I see an install guide
12:41
kingjs, K12Linux is not a distro. Have you even read that site?
12:42
https://fedorahosted.org/k12linux/wiki/InstallGuide
12:42
<kingjs>
I'll read the install guide.
12:42
That's what i'm unable to understand
12:42
<Hyperbyte>
It seems to link to packages here: http://mplug.org/~k12linux/rpm/
12:42
<kingjs>
i'll read more and patiently
12:42
<Hyperbyte>
But those are only el6 packages. I very much doubt they will work on CentOS 5 at all.
12:43
Can I give you some useful advice?
12:43
<kingjs>
Thanks for pointing me to a useful resource
12:43
I'll try k12linux on CentOS6
12:43
<Hyperbyte>
Use Ubuntu for LTSP. It's much better supported. I'm actually a long-time RedHat/Fedora user... big fan of what they do...

But the LTSP support for RedHat-based distros is at best, minimal.

14:54
it's not that i don't believe you :)
14:54
<alkisg>
Maybe some Greek selected the word "Import" :P
15:01
<vagrantc>
alkisg: it won't let me create it until you delete yours
15:03
<alkisg>
vagrantc: ah it might needs distinct names, let me rename mine...
15:03
vagrantc: how about now? (the ltsp one)
15:04* alkisg renamed the ldm one too
15:07
<vagrantc>
alkisg: i used bzr.debian.org and it worked fine
15:08
<alkisg>
vagrantc: I don't want mine once you have yours working, so I'll just delete them now
15:08
<vagrantc>
although it hasn't been synced yet
15:08
<alkisg>
Let me just update the recipes so that they're not deleted along with the branch...
15:11
Deleted the ltsp one, waiting for your new ldm branch for the recipe...
15:12
<vagrantc>

18:39
<jammcq>
hey, I talked to Dave at the seawall
18:40
he can handle us on the first weekend of october
18:40
it would be hard to come earlier because their tourist season is still going
18:40
they get the "fall colors" at about that time
18:41
<stgraber>
so that'd be 4-8th of October?
18:41
<jammcq>
4-7
18:41
some people would show up on the 3rd
18:42
he's penciled us in for that weekend
18:42
<stgraber>
hmm, right, 4-7, can't read today apparently ;)
18:42
<jammcq>
i'm just trying to get agreement from all the peeps involved
18:43
<stgraber>
I'm fine with that as I really just need to take one day off to attend and I'll still be on this side of the ocean around that time
18:43
I think ogra_ said it wouldn't work for him, but later would be no better, so not sure we can do much there :(
18:54
<jammcq>
yeah
18:55
my daughter is getting married sept 29 so I certainly can't do the last weekend in sept. and any earlier would be a problem for the motel
