Alright experts, I have a weird one for you
04:16
I have an Edubuntu 10.04 LTSP computer lab, and 3 machines are giving me trouble
04:17
They are all Gateway Profile 4 machines, which is an all-in-one machine (computer built into monitor). When these specific machines boot up, I can hear them log into Edubuntu (the sound is on), but the screens remain blank.
04:18
I believe X is using their secondary VGA port instead of the built-in monitor for some reason. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot, or specify that they should boot to the built-in monitor?
04:19
Thanks in advance for any ideas or tips! I'm SO close to finishing this lab, once I get these 3 machines working I can let the students and staff back in again :-)

miks, look at XRANDR_* config options in lts.conf
07:48
Also, it helps greatly if you can actually run 'xrandr' on the thin clients in question, to test your theory.
07:49
I'd attach a screen to the VGA port, and if it turns on run xrandr to see what it outputs, then enable the internal display and disable the external. If that gives desired results, then you need to set the appropriate XRANDR_* config values in lts.conf for the thin clients.

13:05
<Hyperbyte>
Andy, we're moving offices, I told that before I think
13:05
I'm arranging everything, from network cabling to new server room to moving telecom lines...
13:06
Especially the last is proving to be quite a bitch... I'm being sent from pillar to post and back...

what would cause me to get a boot prompt during pxe boot

13:08
<andygraybeal>
aah moving office.
13:09
Hyperbyte, i didn't realize, i bet it's exciting though, even though it's annoying and troublesome.
13:09
<Hyperbyte>
Heh
13:09
Yeah, very exciting.
13:09
Love building new stuff. :)
13:09
But I think everybody does.
13:09
<andygraybeal>
Hyperbyte, i would love to start all over again, especially with the wiring and the knowledge i've gained since I first did it.
13:10
<Hyperbyte>
Toughest part of being in IT I think is that you have to maintain systems... maintenance and support I don't like.
13:10
Building new stuff is awesome! :)
13:10
Heh
13:10
I knew our new office was close to an airport by the way
13:10
<matrix3000>
yep
13:10
<Hyperbyte>
Not very often used airport, but still airport.
13:10
<matrix3000>
i agree
13:10
maintaining systems is a pain in my arse
13:11
<Hyperbyte>
Just found out the main runway is 400 meters from our office.
13:11
I wonder how much noise that's going to give.
13:11

matrix3000, one just loads to a boot screen eh? does the issue follow the nic?

13:12
but at the same desk
13:12
it doesn't start ubuntu but the computer next to it did
13:12
<Hyperbyte>
Which Ubuntu version?
13:12
<matrix3000>
11.04
13:13* Hyperbyte shrugs.
13:14
<matrix3000>
lol
13:14
will be 11.10 if i can not be a pussy
13:14
and have confidence in crappy unity
13:15
<Hyperbyte>
Why 11.10?
13:15
<andygraybeal>
<-- 10.04 :)
13:16
<matrix3000>
cause 11.10 is newer
13:16
10.04 had issues for me
13:16
it hated not running dhcp on it
13:16
<Hyperbyte>
matrix3000, no, really, why?
13:16
<matrix3000>
and yea a few other reasons
13:16
ipappend coulding fix everything
13:16
couldnt*
13:16
<Hyperbyte>
2012 is newer than 2011, doesn't mean we're all anxiously waiting for the year to be over.
13:17
Why 11.10?
13:17
<matrix3000>
11.10 is the latest release of ubuntu
13:17
<Hyperbyte>
That's not a reason.
13:17
<matrix3000>
and 11.04 asks to upgrade to it
13:17
but im not going to
13:17
till prolly 12.04
13:17
<Hyperbyte>
What does 11.10 has that warrants a whole lot of work upgrading your system?
13:17
<andygraybeal>
matrix3000, when you say 'you hated not running dhcp on it' do you mean the dhcpd3 server?
13:17
<Hyperbyte>
*has->have
13:17
<matrix3000>
yea
13:17
nothing
13:17
<andygraybeal>
matrix3000, i run dhcpd3 on mine; without issue.
13:18
<matrix3000>
that's why
13:18
<Hyperbyte>
matrix3000, so don't upgrade.
13:19
I have no intention of upgrading my system from 11.04 to anything else. Maybe in a few months, after the whole move, when I'm bored one day in the weekend I'll make a harddisk image of the terminal server for easy restore, and run an upgrade just to see what happens.
13:19* khildin is away: I'm busy, or afk, or..... just don't disturb ok.... :P
13:19
<Hyperbyte>
But apart from that, I have no plans to upgrade.
13:19

13:19

13:21

its not my fault i configured devices with static ips and then they switch overnight and request dhcp addresses
13:33
then i go into the /etc/network/interfaces and the statics are defined and no mention of dhcp
13:33
i do a /etc/init.d/networking restart
13:33
and then bam all good

You are probably using a mix of NetworkManager and /etc/network/interfaces
13:43

matrix3000, whether a GUI is installed in the system or not has nothing to do with it.
14:55
I can send my previous two messages about NetworkManager and /etc/network/interfaces conflicting another time, if you really need me to say it three times
14:55
But unless you go and actually check, this problem isn't gonna go away.
15:00
<matrix3000>
how do i check for network manager
15:03
i can just do a sudo apt-get remove network-manager can't i?
15:03
since im not using ubuntu-desktop
15:04
<Hyperbyte>
You could do that, yes.
15:04
Maybe.
15:04
Not sure about Ubuntu.
15:05
<matrix3000>
and that would fix the issue and then i would know it would not use anything but /etc/network/interfaces
15:05

I'm 99% sure that would fix all your problems, assuming Ubuntu lets you remove it without issues.
15:05
