Hi everybody, I'm tryng LTSP with Ubuntu 12.04 and it works great, but I'm missing some information and I hope someone here could help me...
08:38
What I'm missing is which is the right way of using LDM from an already installed system
08:39
The idea is to leave an Ubuntu 12.04 server as it is but be able to launch an LDM session if needed
08:41
Does anyone have pointers about how to configure LDM outside a thin client?

<Hyperbyte>
sto, I don't understand your question. LDM is the LTSP login manager, it is made for building a connection from a thin client to a server.
10:21
If you want to log in locally on the server, you just use the default login screen it presents (GDM I believe)
10:22
<sto>
Hyperbyte: no, I want to connect to a LTSP server from a different server
10:22
<Hyperbyte>
If you want to configure an already installed system as an LTSP thin client, sure you could probably install LDM locally, along with the ltsp-client package, but it'd still have lots of problems. The 'ltsp-build-client' script does more than just install LDM.
10:22
sto, why would you want to do this?
10:23
<sto>
To have a graphic console and use the LTSP server installation
10:23
<Hyperbyte>
If you have a computer, which you want to use as a thin client, just configure it to do a network boot.
10:23
sto, that still doesn't answer the question. What exactly are you trying to achieve?
10:24
<sto>
No, the idea is to use few resources from the already running server for the graphic console
10:24
<Hyperbyte>
You want to share resources between servers?
10:24
<sto>
I want an extra graphic client using the already running server
10:25
The server runs a database and other stuff and I want to be able to use it as an extra thin client
10:25
<Hyperbyte>
sto, wait a second. You have a server, running, all kinds of processes... and you want to leave all those processes, and just use the console to do LDM?
10:25
<sto>
Yep
10:26
That is the idea, just to have an extra console
10:26
<Hyperbyte>
Configuring the server as a thin client would probably be difficult. I'm not sure.
10:26
Have you considered just starting a virtual machine on the console that does PXE boot?
10:27
Then your server and thin client processes will not interfere with eachother in any way.
10:27
And you also don't have to worry about combining the two, or worry about security implications.
10:27
<sto>
Yes, but I still need to launch the X server on the server
10:28
<Hyperbyte>
So?
10:28
If you're running virtual machine or thin client, the X server is always on the client.
10:28
<sto>
The virtual machine has to run inside the server's X server and I thought that LDM did just that
10:29
It consumes less resources

10:29
<sto>
But if it is difficult to do sure I can do what you suggest
10:29professor_ has left IRC (professor_!bb04e592@gateway/web/freenode/ip.187.4.229.146, Client Quit)
10:30
<Hyperbyte>
Right, the virtual machine would use a little bit more resources.
10:30
If you don't want that, and want to run LDM directly on the already installed system, you're gonna need a developer.
10:30
I can't help you with that.
10:31
Although, if you want to know what LTSP does to a Linux installation to make it a thin client, you could look at the source of the 'ltsp-build-client' script.
10:32
<sto>
Yes, I was asking for documentation, I thought there must be something already available as the ldm manpage says that:
10:32
It was designed for the LTSP project, but could be used in a non-ltsp
10:32
environment as well.
10:32
But there is always the code, of course... ;)
10:32
<Hyperbyte>
12:30 <Hyperbyte> If you don't want that, and want to run LDM directly on the already installed system, you're gonna need a developer. 12:30 <Hyperbyte> I can't help you with that.
10:32
I'm not saying it's not possible - I just don't know.
10:33
:)
10:33
Developers hang around here by the way, you're just gonna need be even more patient than you have been. :)
10:34
^ +to
10:35
<sto>
Hyperbyte: yes, don't worry, I asked here to see if someone could help and you tried, I'll wait or start digging into the code (BTW, I'm already looking and started an LDM on my server, but it crashes, so I quite sure it is possible, I only need to understand how the system works... ;)
10:36
<Hyperbyte>
Does it crash during start or during login?
10:36
<sto>
login
10:36
<Hyperbyte>
That's probably because it's missing lts.conf variables
10:36
<sto>
I started it from startx
10:37
putting it inside .xseesion
10:37
<Hyperbyte>
Like which server it needs to ssh to
10:37
<sto>
I put it
10:37
I copied the ldm-init script
10:37
but it probably needs more things
10:38
<Hyperbyte>
Just guessing here, but try setting LDM_SERVER environment variable
10:38
export LDM_SERVER=192.168...
10:38
<sto>
more .xsession
10:38
#!/bin/sh
10:38
# run on tty:
10:38
tty="7"
10:38
# set ip address of your ssh server:
10:38
export LDM_SERVER=192.168.212.11
10:38
/usr/sbin/ldm vt$tty :$(($tty-1))
10:38
<Hyperbyte>
Ah
10:39
How about the ldm log?
10:39
It should write to /var/log/ldm.log
10:41
Also check ssh keys
10:41
!ltsp-update-sshkeys
10:41
<ltsp>
Hyperbyte: ltsp-update-sshkeys: If you changed your server IP, you need to run ltsp-update-sshkeys, and if you're using NBD (Ubuntu) you also need ltsp-update-image afterwards
10:41
<Hyperbyte>
See if the client has the correct keys

10:42
<Hyperbyte>
LDM_XSESSION maybe?
10:42
Should probably also be set.
10:43
<sto>
Probably both things are problematic, as I don't have a LDM_XSESSION set and the client has no ssh keys
10:43
<Hyperbyte>
sto, looks we're making some progress at least. :)
10:43
Would you consider writing a page about your experience on our new LTSP wiki when you succeed?
10:44
<sto>
Yes
10:44
I'll sure do
10:44
<Hyperbyte>
I'll send you a pm with the link... it's not public yet. :)
