alkisg: it's not actually needed, but i'd rather migrate towards the present
07:40
<alkisg>
vagrantc: but why change the requirements to something more recent, when it's not needeed?
07:40
<vagrantc>
alkisg: at least for debian, the backports are available
07:40
alkisg: less code to maintain?
07:40
<alkisg>
Ah, there were actual changes that need debhelper 9?
07:40
I thought it was just a version bump...
07:41
<vagrantc>
yes, dropped all the dpkg-buildflags calls
07:41
debian/rules is much easier to read
07:41
<alkisg>
Ah, OK. So, for e.g. the 5 GB of our own greek packages here, if we don't need any debhelper 9 features, we never need to bump its version, right?
07:42
<vagrantc>
i think you could get away with just downgrading the debian/compat and debhelper dependency ... i think dpkg-buildflags was a no-op on squeeze anyways
07:43
5GB of your own packages?
07:43
<alkisg>
Yeah we have a repository of greek educational software that we packaged in .deb form
07:43
<vagrantc>
so, clearly i didn't get to ltsp upload today ... but it's pretty close
07:44
yeah, you don't typically need to bump debian/compat unless your current packaging needs it
07:44
the newer versions often make it possible to simplify debian/rules ...
07:45* vagrantc isn't generally willing to support anything older than oldstable
07:45
<alkisg>
Our debian/rules mostly is just 2 lines...: %: dh $@
07:45
<vagrantc>
alkisg: those are the best!

That specific repository aims to support as many debian-originated distros as possible... debian, ubuntu, mint... and any versions of them... so we try to keep things as simple and conservative as we can there

and also had two servers with 192.168.67.1 on one network which really confused me with my initial testing today
07:49
the classic "why is it not respecting changes to lts.conf" ... "oh, because it's booting to a different server" ... which also explained why mouse and keyboard was broken- mismatched kernel versions
07:50
took me probably 2 hours to figure that out
07:50
<alkisg>
...they happened to have 67.x, or they were assigned by you because they're ltsp servers?
07:50
<vagrantc>
barring disaster, i'll get to it
07:50* alkisg had hoped 67.x would be a bit rare...
07:51
<vagrantc>
alkisg: they were both part of my ltsp test environments, i just forgot they were both on the same (virtual) network
07:51
<alkisg>
Good :)
08:04
<vagrantc>
alkisg: we don't need the update-inetd in ltsp anymore, do we?
08:04
<alkisg>
Right, we don't
08:05* alkisg also wonders why he still has: 9572 stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/nbdswapd
08:05
<vagrantc>
it's used to enable nbdswapd, but we use name based swap now...
08:05mikkel has joined IRC (mikkel!~mikkel@93.176.85.50)

<vagrantc>
ldm-server still uses it for ldminfod
08:07
hrm. but we still have it in postrm, too
08:08
i.e. removing the old package stuff...
08:08
but i think the old packages should handle that...
08:09
<alkisg>
ltsp-server.postinst: update-inetd --group LTSP --add "9572 stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/nbdswapd"
08:09
...I mean, shouldn't we remove that now?
08:09
<vagrantc>
right, that can go for sure
08:09
<alkisg>
And remove the update-inetd dependency...
08:09
<vagrantc>
but the postrm code still should remove 9572 if it's present
08:10
er, 9571
08:10
hrm.
08:10
<alkisg>
So we can't remove update-inetd yet, ok
08:10
Remove 9572 from postinst, add it to postrm
08:11
<vagrantc>
i think we can rely on update-inetd being present from the old install... at least enough to leave out the dependency
08:11
<alkisg>
apt-get purge --auto-remove will remove it though
08:11
<vagrantc>
if we conditionally update the remove parts to not explode if update-inetd isn't present
08:12
i think it calls postrm as part of the upgrade process
08:12* vagrantc forgets what 9571 is/was
08:13
<alkisg>
ldminfod/ltsp-server?
08:13
*ldm-server
08:13
<vagrantc>
hah. it's ldminfod
08:13
i think we've got some messed up scripts ...
08:14gbaman has left IRC (gbaman!~gbaman@host81-130-45-110.in-addr.btopenworld.com, Remote host closed the connection)
08:14
<vagrantc>
or maybe ldminfod was shipped in ltsp for a time?
08:14
ages ago, yup.
08:15
so, we may have a bit of a mess with update-inetd ...
08:18
<alkisg>
Meh another teacher reports that wait_for_udev still isn't good enough for him...
08:18
A hack that would overload configure_networking() would be the best approach, until initramfs-tools provided a good hook
08:19
<vagrantc>
meh. looks like we need to keep update-inetd around just to remove our old cruft.
08:19
<alkisg>
I can implement that hack, and it would be the most safer approach, but you wouldn't like it because it's a hack... would you agree in committing it though? :)
08:19
<vagrantc>
https://wiki.debian.org/MaintainerScripts
08:19
hrm.
08:19
how ugly is it?
08:19
and what's the issue?
08:20
<alkisg>
The issue is that the devices are not available in init-premount
08:20
So we need to wait until they're ready, possibly while also triggering udev events
08:21
But, what I'd like to do is move udhcp from init-premount to be called the first time configure_networking is called
08:21
I.e. in local-top or in nfs-top etc
08:21
initramfs-tools doesn't provide a good hook to do that
08:21
So I'd need to fool it in a hackish way
08:21
<vagrantc>
right
08:22
<alkisg>
E.g. I'd use the params.conf results script to fool it
08:22* vagrantc -> sleep
08:22
<alkisg>
Which would work fine for all previous versions of initramfs tools, and possibly many future versions too, but it wouldn't be guaranteed...
08:22
Good night vagrantc
08:24
<vagrantc>
i think if we put a preinst upgrade to handle it, it should work out ok...
08:25
then update-inetd will still be available from the old version, it removes them, and then everything is happy again.
08:25
<alkisg>
Or we can just use sed -d :P
08:26
sed '///d'
08:26
<vagrantc>
the current ltsp-server package disables ldminfod on removal ... but ldminfod is currently installed by ldm-server ... messy.

Hi, I'm setting up an Ubuntu 12.04 LTSP Cluster. I'm having troubles enabling NBD swap. Followed: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/EnableNBDSWAP. Added "NBD_SWAP" to cluster-controller, but with no luck.

18:23* alkisg waves to vagrantc
18:24
<alkisg>
nbdswapd is what the new nbd-swap server calls, as directed from swap.conf, to create the swap file
18:24
<vagrantc>
given tthat i found some crufty junk in the maintainer scripts, i decided to review all that stuff
18:24
alkisg: ok, so we don'tt remove that! :)
18:24
<alkisg>
The old style swap can be removed, but not the new style
18:25
So nbdswapd can be simplified very very much, but not removed
18:25
It can also go in /usr/share/ltsp, if we want
18:25
So that it's no longer a user command
18:26
...although on second thought, its new role is no longer a "d", daemon
18:26
So maybe rename it to /usr/share/ltsp/mkswap...
18:28hydruid has left IRC (hydruid!~hydruid@mail.twinriversheadstart.com, Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
18:29
<vagrantc>
greatly simplified would be good
18:29
<alkisg>
/etc/ltsp/nbdswapd can also be renamed by a command line parameter, e.g. `/usr/share/ltsp/mkswap 512`
18:29
<vagrantc>
alkisg: renaming it will require updating existing nbd-server config files...
18:29
<alkisg>
That command is in /etc/nbd-server/conf.d/swap.conf anyway, i.e. it's in a conffile
18:30
Ahm not a conffile, sorry, a config file in etc
18:30
<vagrantc>
either way, it's troublesome to update
18:30gbaman has joined IRC (gbaman!~gbaman@host81-130-45-110.in-addr.btopenworld.com)
18:30
<alkisg>
We can symlink it for now
18:30
<vagrantc>
ah, good forward-thinking
18:30
<alkisg>
I.e. keep the old-style nbdswapd symlink for compatibility with existing installations
18:31staffencasa_ is now known as staffencasa
18:31
<vagrantc>
update ltsp-config to move to the new location
18:31
<alkisg>
Right
18:31
<vagrantc>
might be more work than i was hoping to do today, but might be better to move in the right direction sooner than later, if all this cruft is any indication
18:31
<alkisg>
We can also postpone it for ltsp6
18:32
Where we'll break compatibility in a lot of places
18:32
So sysadmins will need some time to revisit their setup anyways
18:32
<vagrantc>
might be best...
18:32
but we could simplify it for now
18:32
<alkisg>
And stop supporting inetd?
18:33
E.g. suppose someone has a squeeze chroot that doesn't support name-based swap
18:34
<vagrantc>
stick it to em
18:34* alkisg would probably postpone that (the simplification) for ltsp 6 too...
18:34
<vagrantc>
ok, so i've stopped supporting it in the packaging, but they could manually add it
18:34
<alkisg>
datube: nbd swap works out of the box
18:35
vagrantc: if someone has it, do you remove it?
18:35
<vagrantc>
our support in the packaging was kind of half-assed
18:35

18:35
<vagrantc>
alkisg: no, i don't do anything
18:35

18:36

Haha
18:36
<vagrantc>
i keep finding more cruft
18:37
like, several postinst/postrm scripts do nothing
18:37
well, maybe technically not nothing, but i'm going to check if dh 9 fills in the blanks for us now, rather than requiring a stub
18:38
alkisg: so, you think we should leave nbdrootd in for squeeze installs as well?
18:38
<alkisg>
dh 7 didn't require postinst/postrm scripts...
18:38
<vagrantc>
alkisg: it didn't require it, but there were some lintian warnings ... or maybe that was from even longer ago
18:39
<alkisg>
I think I would just stop adding nbdrootd to inetd.conf, nothing more....
18:39* vagrantc glares at nbd-proxy

18:39

18:39
<vagrantc>
alkisg: we haven't done that since squeeze ... although i was thinking we leave nbdrootd out of the 5.5.x packkages ... you're thinking we should leave it in?
18:40
<alkisg>
(08:39:48 μμ) vagrantc: alkisg: we haven't done that since squeeze ==> put nbdswapd in inetd?
18:40
That's what I have in 14.04 now
18:40
