14:41
<markit>
bennabiy: yes, but with red hat kernel
14:41
for better compatibility with hardware
14:42
if you are only interested in kvm virtualization and not openvz, you can install debian kernel, even from backports (i.e. kernel 3.11)
14:48
<bennabiy>
Interesting.
14:49
What benefit vs. overhead does openvz bring?
14:49
<markit>
bennabiy: openvz uses the host kernel, so small ram footprint, access of the host fs (but limited in scope) etc.
14:49
<bennabiy>
I currently have been using Xen on my non 64 bit machines and KVM / libvirt on my enabled
14:50
<markit>
kvm has improved so much that I don't use openvz anymore
14:50
i.e. can't do statefull iptable rules
14:50
or other problem with programs that require kernel modules
14:51
<bennabiy>
openvz is limited with that? So proxmox can be used without using openvz?
14:54
That sounds very interesting
14:57
markit: I appreciate the information. Thank you!
14:59
<markit>
bennabiy: you can create the kind of vm you want, kvm or openvz. If you don't use their kernel, you can create only kvm ones
14:59
RH kernel has the openvz patches
15:00
<bennabiy>
Ah, I understand now.
15:01
how does proxmox handle clustering and or migrating images from one server to another?
15:03
I cannot seem to get KVM to migrate my vm to another server.
15:05
I have one server which has a VM set up as a base install. I want to get that VM to 3 + servers, and then clone it about 3 times on each server, and then customize each one for the service it will provide.
15:09
<markit>
bennabiy: at the moment, live migration can be done only on shared storage
15:09
qemu is working on migration without shared storage, AFAIK
15:10
if you don't want live migration but just copy, do a backup on server one and a restore on server two
15:10
you have to change mac address etc then

proxmox will migrate fine offline though, right?
16:15
to others in the cluster?
16:29
<markit>
yep, should be so (never setup a cluster myself)
16:30
you can connect to whatever node you want, see all the cluster in the web interface, and manage the vm from there
16:30
bennabiy: very handy
16:30
<bennabiy>
even over WAN?
16:31
I think I need to try it. do you install bare metal, or do you modify an existing install ( you personally )

anyone know why nbd-server would not be using it's auth file after an update?
22:11
the file is ltsp_i386 and it lists the auth file as /etc/ltsp/nbd-server.allow... and that is where the file is
22:12
I did a temp solution by commenting it out, but I am just confused why it seems to be ignoring the file

I ran an apt-get upgrade and it shit a brick afterwards... and it does say "authfile = /etc/ltsp/nbd-server.allow" in the ltsp_i386.conf file. That is why I am confused (or am I misunderstanding the bug report? which is entirely possible)
