00:29 | <dgroos> Howdy folks,
| |
00:29 | * vagrantc waves | |
00:29 | <dgroos> long time :-)
| |
00:30 | I’ve got a new classroom and have set up ltsp pnp with 30 clients, running off the teacher computer. Working pretty well.
| |
00:30 | I’ve got this problem: “Gnome fallback - intermittent menus on top panel”
| |
00:30 | And see Alkisg’s solution at #8:
| |
00:31 | https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/1078679/comments/8
| |
00:32 | Basically, it’s to make a script that does a double-launch of gnome-panel.
| |
00:32 | So, I don’t quite get his directions: “Create /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/local/bin/gnome-panel, with the following contents…”
| |
00:33 | In my setup I’ve only got /opt/ltsp/images/ not /opt/ltsp/i386/…
| |
00:34 | Do I just make that string of directories ending with the script (/opt/ltsp/i386/usr/local/bin/gnome-panel)?
| |
00:35 | Seems strange, just wondering if I’ve missed something super-obvious to others or if my setup is non-standard for some reason.
| |
00:35 | ideas?
| |
00:36 | should say I’m running 12.04 standard ltsp-pnp
| |

00:40 | <vagrantc> dgroos: you'd just create /usr/loca/bin/gnome-panel on the server and rebuild your image
| |
00:41 | <dgroos> Now THAT makes a lot more sense to me, Thanks vagrantc!
| |
00:42 | I’ll put this on line for others who might need it.
| |

00:45 | <vagrantc> effectively, with ltsp-pnp model, there's no chroot, so you edit the server always.
| |
00:46 | for classic ltsp5, /opt/ltsp/i386 is your typically chroot environment for the thin client image.
| |
00:46 | (or /opt/ltsp/amd64, /opt/ltsp/xyz, etc.)
| |
00:47 | staffencasa has left IRC (staffencasa!~staffenca@8-220.ptpg.oregonstate.edu, Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
00:52 | <dgroos> Right, I just didn’t get his notation of saying “create /opt/…” but it does make sense—kind of like saying “add /usr/local/… and then rebuild your image”. Again, thanks—this has been a problem in my room for a while.
| |
01:07 | <vagrantc> hope it works for you!
| |
01:48 | <dgroos> Other prob… I’ve got 1 student whose gnome-panel NEVER shows. I’ve got this in my notes from when I used 10.04…
| |
01:50 | gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel (&&) killall gnome-panel **my blogspot blog inserted the & stuff! not sure what the middle of the command should say. Any ideas?
| |
01:52 | OK looks like it should be: gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel
| |
01:53 | but, does this 10.04 command still apply to 12.04 with ltsp-pnp?

05:08 | <alkisg> vagrantc: I see that the debian proprietary nvidia driver packages are structured differently from ubuntu's. In ubuntu we cannot install the nvidia drivers to the chroot unless all clients have the same nvidia cards, but I think that in debian it might be different, that you can have many proprietary drivers installed simultaneously and only have one of them activated at init-ltsp.d time. Have you played with those at all?
| |
05:35 | <vagrantc> alkisg: haven't really, no
| |
05:35 | it's been ages since i looked into it... used to require different incompatible libs...
| |
05:36 | * alkisg would like to be able to have all the proprietary drivers installed and selected automatically on each client's boot... and even have 1 of them activated on the server without affecting ltsp-pnp
05:36 | * vagrantc nods | |

I followed this guide --> http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2177959 and no luck. using edubuntu 14.04 with FAT clients. Unity is the desktop that loads for client which looks/works great. Just need to figure out how to give them a template desktop at login.

14:51 | <championofcyrodi> geekgirlsc: you can use 'pam_mkhomedir' in conjuction with /etc/skel to define a home folder template when a 'new' user logs in.
| |
14:51 | so in the fat client image (ltsp-chroot) you should be able to just 'useradd' the account, and update the /etc/skel. This way everytime the fat client is rebooted, the /home/<user> will be wiped, but a template home folder will be loaded at login.
| |
14:52 | anyone know about updating the 'locate' db on a fat client?

15:59 | <Hyperbyte> geekgirlsc, there are no guest users in LTSP. There's a hack which makes it possible, described in our wiki, to wipe home dirs on login. That works, but you do need one guest account per client, yes.
