08:08
<davy>
i'm using ltsp on an ubuntu box and i try to figure out how to provide many languages to the users
08:11
when the user arrive on the ldm screen, if we want to choose the language the only choice is "default"
08:12
i tried to install some language packs on the server and in the chroot but it doesn't work
08:18
<robehend1>
out of my range, sadly :(

<[GuS]>
Hi guys, i have problems trying to boot a client on a recently and latest installation of LTSP5 on gentoo: http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/9297/ltsp5gentoo.png
10:39
any tip?
10:39
<alkisg>
No idea about Gentoo, but it looks like the cow mechanism didn't work
10:39
(before the screenshot you pasted)
10:40
So it's a read only file system, so the initscripts won't work properly
10:40
tmpfs + aufs, whatever Gentoo is using
10:41
<knipwim>
hmm, last time i checked, gentoo works out of the box
10:41
<[GuS]>
:S
10:41
<knipwim>
are you using this: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/LTSP ?
10:42
<[GuS]>
Indeed, is not the first time i install it on Gentoo, it is weird
10:43
should i rebuild the client?
10:43
<dberkholz>
i wonder if there's something unusual a bit farther up that would provide more detail on why that happened
10:45
<[GuS]>
And i cant see nothing on logs that can tell me that :S
10:46
<knipwim>
almost looks like ltsp-client-setup didn't start by default
10:46
but indeed, can't be sure
10:48
<crazed>
so if i have a thin client that supports a higher resolution than my monitors, how do i force the resolution size?
10:49
seems this thin client likes to default to 16:10 aspect ratio, when my monitor is 1920x1080 (1080p)
10:49[GuS] has quit IRC
10:49
<alkisg>
crazed: on the client, run: xrandr

And put the results to pastebin

<knipwim>
[GuS]: which version do you have?
10:52
<alkisg>
crazed: so your *current* resolution is 1920x1080, what resolution do you want?!
10:52
<knipwim>
of ltsp-server?
10:52
<crazed>
alkisg: i want that resolution, but on boot it comes up with 16:10, i had to attach a monitor capable and lower it to the right resolution to attach my monitors
10:52
<[GuS]>
knipwim: latest, as mention in the wiki
10:52

crazed: on boot? You mean the splash screen, before X is started?
10:53
<crazed>
even when X is started
10:53
<alkisg>
crazed: 16:10? What's the exact resolution?
10:53
<crazed>
i cannot see the ogin screen either
10:54
<knipwim>
check :)
10:54
<crazed>
alkisg: i'm not sure it does not say right now that i have the 1080p monitor attached
10:54
but if i am to reboot, i will get a "incompatible resolution" error on my monitors
10:55
<alkisg>
crazed: I'm not sure I'm following. So you're saying that when it boots it has a resolution greater than 1920x1080?
10:55
<crazed>
alkisg: yes, i blieve it is 1920 x 16:10
10:56
er 1920 x1200 *
10:56
<alkisg>
It would be listed in xrandr then. Weird.
10:56
But do try setting XRANDR_MODE_0=1920x1080 in lts.conf
10:56
And see if that fixes it
10:56
<crazed>
will that effect all thin clients
10:57
<alkisg>
If you put it under [Default], yes. If you put it under [Mac address], no.
10:57
<crazed>
ah true
10:57
let me give that a try

<alkisg>
crazed: was the resolution different before you logged in? (i.e. in LDM)?
11:20
<crazed>
no
11:20
<alkisg>
From the same user/terminal, type: cat ~/.config/monitors.xml
11:20
<crazed>
it went to 1024x768 right away
11:20
the thin client term or from the server
11:20
<alkisg>
It doesn't matter as long as it is the same user
11:20
Do it on the thin client
11:21
Do you have such a file? (are you using gnome?)
11:21
<crazed>
alkisg: http://ltsp.pastebin.com/Tad2g9E5
11:21
i'm using gnome currently to fix this, but i usually use awesome, which basically will read gnome's settings
11:21
<alkisg>
crazed: ok. Now do: rm ~/.config/monitors.xml
11:21
Logoff and then logon again.
11:22
I think that the 1024x768 resolution was applied from your gnome settings
11:22
<crazed>
okay
11:24
alkisg: sweet, it's the right res now. now i need to reboot with the right monitor attached
11:24
and pray it works
11:30
alkisg: crap now it doesn't display 1920x1080 as an option in xrandr, 1360x768 is the highest
11:30
no monitors.xml

crazed: one simple way to check is to boot with the "good" monitor, and then switch to the "bad" monitor without rebooting
11:35
If it reports that it supports 1360x768 though, I doubt that it supports 1920x1080.
11:35
<crazed>
alkisg: it supports 1920x1080, i tried booting with the good and switching to the bad, everything is working this way
11:35
just seems annoying that i'd need to do that to use these
11:36
<alkisg>
crazed: ok. Then try this:
11:36
<crazed>
i couldn't boot with a standard 19inch monitor either
11:36
<alkisg>
In lts.conf, under that mac address section, keep XRANDR_MODE_0, but also add:

will this fix the initrd image, or do i have to wait for ldm/x to get there before i should see results
11:37

Wait for ldm/x

11:44
<alkisg>
Nice :)
11:44
It's a shame that monitors don't send correct EDIDs
11:44
<crazed>
i'm going to document this, cuz i know lots of people are going to have this issue in the future
11:44
<alkisg>
(or drivers can't collect them)
11:44
<crazed>
also who knows what's going to happen when i get my display port => dvi adapter to hook up my secon dmonitor lol
11:45
<alkisg>
Nice, put it in the wiki. The main idea is "tell X that the monitors supports very large timings, and use XRANDR_MODE_0 and XRANDR_RATE_0 to limit to the desired resolution"
11:46
If one put *exactly* the correct timings, then he won't need XRANDR_MODE_0 anymore
11:46
The correct one will be automatically used.
11:46
So after some experiments, you can only keep X_HORZSYNC / X_VERTREFRESH
