<nroussi>
hi alkisg, I have an issue. Think you can help out? http://alkisg.mysch.gr/steki/index.php?topic=5713.msg64465#msg64465
16:24
<alkisg>
nroussi: hi, ltsp-cluster is pretty much unmaintained...
16:24
I've never used it personally
16:24
<nroussi>
I know but it was working fine up until I updated. There is a problem with the nbd
16:24
<alkisg>
What's the ltsp-client version/
16:24
?
16:25
In the chroot... dpkg -l ltsp-client|grep ^ii
16:25
<nroussi>
ii ltsp-client 5.3.7-0ubuntu2.7
16:25
<alkisg>
Also, try restarting the server, nbd-server has a rare bug where it hangs and `service nbd-server restart` doesn't restart it
16:25
Or, service nbd-server stop; killall -9 nbd-server etc etc
16:26
I.e. the nbd-server process doesn't die with a plain kill if it's hanged; it needs kill -9
16:26
<nroussi>
ok. What should be in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default ?
16:26mealstrom has joined IRC (mealstrom!~Thunderbi@46.63.21.12)
16:27
<nroussi>
I have: default ltsp
16:27
<alkisg>
You don't use the greek schools ppa, right?
16:27
<nroussi>
no
16:28
and: append ro initrd=initrd.img root=/dev/nbd0 init=/sbin/init-ltsp vt.handoff=7
16:28
<alkisg>
Then your ltsp version is very old, I don't remember the contents of pxelinux.cfg/default exactly, but yeah something like that ^
16:28
But your nbd-server configuration should have :ltsp_i386, not /opt/ltsp/i386 in vanilla 12.04, afaik
16:29
Anyway, I don't have access to any vanilla 12.04 systems, so better wait for help from someone that doesn't have the greek schools ppa in his sources...
16:30
<nroussi>
in the file /etc/nbd-server/conf.d/ltsp_i386.conf ?
16:30
<alkisg>
Yup
16:33
<nroussi>
and on which ports is nbd-server supposed to run? I have 10809 in /etc/services but in /etc/inetd.conf I have 9571,9572 and 2000
16:35
<alkisg>
Those are just leftovers that were not removed in 12.04 vanilla
16:36
The ldm-server in 9571 is ok though
16:36
nbd-server should be on 10809, both for i386.img and swap
16:37
For Greek LTSP users, I strongly suggest _not_ using vanilla Ubuntu/LTSP, it has a lot of issues that are solved in the Greek schools ppa
16:38
<nroussi>
when I run netstat -nap I see inetd running on 9572 and 9571 and 2000.
16:39
<alkisg>
9571 stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/ldminfod
16:39
You should only have that one in inetd.conf
16:40
The others don't cause any harm, but they're not used either, they shouldn't be there
16:40
<nroussi>
ok, I commented out the line that started with 2000 but the one for 9572 shows that nbd_swap was running on it.
16:40
9572 stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/nbdswapd
16:42
how do I make sure that nbd-server for the .img and swap are running on 10809?
16:42
<alkisg>
!nbd-client
16:42
<ltsp`>
nbd-client: To try mounting the NBD image from the client initramfs: nbd-client 192.168.67.1 -N /opt/ltsp/i386 /dev/nbd0
16:42
<alkisg>
With -N swap you test swap...
16:44
<nroussi>
so nbd-client <serverIP> -N swap /dev/nbd0 ?
16:46
<alkisg>
Yup, either from an ltsp client or from some other pc that has nbd-client installed
16:46
Check that /dev/nbd0 is not in use... (it is on ltsp clients)
16:49
<nroussi>
ok going over to check now.
17:11
ok when I run nbd-client <ip> -N swap /dev/nbd0 I get: Negotiation: ..size=512MB os=1024, sz=536870912 bytes
17:11
then nbd0: unknow partition table

<alkisg>
Or do you use transcoding?
20:28
<Ark74>
yeah, transconding
20:28
the stream done using http
20:29
i used the default 8080 port, since i have nothing else using it
20:30
at the end just kill vlc & xtrlock, and i'm done ;)
20:30
<alkisg>
That takes too much cpu though... I would like to find a solution that wouldn't need transcoding
20:32
For example, gstreamer supports multiple outputs of the same video stream, so I was able to play something as the teacher it totem, and have it projected to all the client screens, but of course that wasn't automated, it was manual...
20:33
<Ark74>
is not that too much cpu, at least not for the server
20:34
<alkisg>
Depending on the input video stream, in some cases it's possible to do transcoding, but in some others the video needs to be decoded + reencoded from scratch,
20:34
in those cases, it needs 100% cpu of some dual core server...
20:35
!flash
20:35
<ltsp`>
flash: Yes, flash sucks. An HD full screen 30 fps video needs 2.5 Gbps bandwidth (1920×1080×4×30)! Make sure you have LDM_DIRECTX=True in your lts.conf file, or if it's just youtube you're after, try some flash replacing plugin like http://linterna-magica.nongnu.org
20:35
<alkisg>
...encoding 2.5 Gbps is hard...
20:35
<Ark74>
well, yeah that sucks
20:35
<alkisg>
It needs 8 cores or more for full hd
20:41
<Ark74>
mpeg 4, transcodes really nice
20:44
h264 no so nice
