Could anyone help me with --mint-dist option? Where I should get /usr/share/mintsource/sylvia/mintsources.conf - file? ltsp-build-client crash there.

!ltsp-manager
09:33
<ltsp>
ltsp-manager: LTSP Manager is a GUI tool that makes LTSP maintenance easy. It's the recommended way to install LTSP in common setups. More info: http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Ltsp-manager
09:33
<alkisg>
kahvis: that's the best way to install ltsp ^
09:34
It basically uses the server installation as a template, so it doesn't even use ltsp-build-client at all
09:34
It works in mint too afaik
09:34
<kahvis>
Thank you very much. I must to try that. I have been using terminal on ubuntu server to keep the server most light weight that I can.
09:35
<alkisg>
No, since you need a desktop environment anyway on the server, install using the same mint that you'll use for the clients
09:35
<kahvis>
It is still possible to build mint client on ubuntu?
09:35
<alkisg>
There might be bugs, bennabiy added support for mint years ago but no ltsp dev is using mint
09:35
It's considered a bad distro, it doesn't respect debian policy etc
09:35
Usually ubuntu mate is suggested instead
09:36
<kahvis>
Okey, maybe the easiest way is to go for linux mint.
09:36
<alkisg>
Erm is "linux mint" different from "mint client on ubuntu"?
09:36
Ah you mean ubuntu server, ok
09:37
Yeah, it'll be easier with ltsp-manager on linuxmint
09:37
<kahvis>
I tried Cinnamon desktop on Ubuntu gnome, it worked fine but it will need so much work for configuration.
09:37
<alkisg>
What are your client specs?
09:37
CPU/RAM?
09:37
If you're using thin clients, you cannot really use opengl-based environments
09:37
If you're using ltsp fat clients, it's fine
09:37
<kahvis>
There are bretty good, but i have thought to possibility to user also rasp3.
09:38
<alkisg>
Raspberry pi 3 will work better on ubuntu mate with the mate environment, not cinnamon
09:39
<kahvis>
It is sad, but cinnamon is most windows like desktop. For my project, the people whom using the system is very nontech people.
09:39
Maybe I should try to configure mate.
09:40
<alkisg>
try mate with redmond panel
09:40
<kahvis>
Thanks for help and sorry from my language.
09:43
Should I do one client-user for my self, make a configurations and copy right files from home folder to folder that copies files to every clients home folder. Then i give only read access to conf files?
09:43
like /etc/skel/
09:47
redmond looks good, thx.
09:56
<alkisg>
kahvis: if you mean "set redmond for all users", this can be done centrally with a configuration in /usr
09:57
In general, it's not good practise to use /etc/skel, as it then may contain paths like /home/template-user, which will cause problems to /home/other-user
09:59
<kahvis>
Ok :)
10:00
Is there any idea use ltsp-build-client instead of ltsp-manager on ubuntu mate?
10:00
Keeping ubuntu server free of desktop...
10:01
<alkisg>
kahvis: you can use ltsp-manager in a template client, and copy the result
10:01
(or in a VM, e.g. virtualbox)

13:26
kahvis no problm ;-)
13:27
kahvis did you already install and use ltsp?
13:30
<kahvis>
Actually I have tested it on ubuntu server few days. Just minimal lab with server and laptop.
13:49
Is that seperated home directory server and OpenLDAP server with ssl possible to implicate with NBD or only with NFS?

15:25
<alkisg>
kahvis: nbd and nfs can be used for /
15:25
(either one of them)
15:25
nfs or sshfs can be used for /home
15:25
nbd can't (normally) be used for /home
15:26
<kahvis>
Thank you!
15:28
I have thought that I rent server for OpenLDAP and home directories. Keeping LTSP servers local. Then you might change LTSP server ( unit where are you working ) as a client. Am I right?
15:28
rented server is going to be in same VPN network.
15:29
<alkisg>
kahvis: LDM_SERVER=server2
15:29
This means "login server", which then automatically is the home server
15:29
So, server1 can send NBD /, and server2 can serve SSHFS or NFS /home
15:30
About LDAP, you usually only configure it on the server, and the clients just authenticate against the server via ssh
15:30
<kahvis>
Yeap, sounds like a plan.
15:30
<alkisg>
So the clients themselves don't know anything about LDAP (in a usual setup)
15:33
<kahvis>
There is a old guide at Ubuntu website for that. I hope it is up to date nowadays.
15:34
<alkisg>
wiki.ltsp.org is mostly up to date
15:34
<kahvis>
Actually it is some finn whom made that. So it is also in finnish :D
15:34
<alkisg>
The ubuntu wiki is usually outdated
15:34
<kahvis>
Okey, thanx.
15:34
<alkisg>
Which page are you reading?
15:35
<kahvis>
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/
15:35
<alkisg>
This isn't a page though, but a directory of pages
15:35
A couple of them are up to date, the rest aren't
15:35
<kahvis>
alkisg, I tried that ltsp-manager, that is mostly for user managment?
15:36
<alkisg>
See on top, "Notice: These pages are no longer maintained and/or contain outdated information - Please refer to the official upstream LTSP-Wiki for current documentation"
15:36
<kahvis>
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/OpenLDAP_NFS_SSL
15:36
<alkisg>
Not just for user management, it automatically solves many ltsp configuration issues
15:37
kahvis: last modification 2009
15:37
You don't want to follow that :)
15:37
<kahvis>
I haven't had those. I looked up that initial setup script throught.
15:37
