Hi, all.

<juantelez>
I've installed LTSP on Debian Jessie. I want to log in from a Raspberry Pi. A second after I put the user/password at LDM, I get the "No response from server, restarting".
02:35
I'm searching in google for the answer for a couple of hours... please help. :D
02:36
<vagrantc>
how did you install LDM on the raspberry pi?
02:37
juantelez: did you configure the server's ssh keys in the raspberry pi's OS
02:37
?
02:38
<juantelez>
Thanks. vagrantc . For the client I used "Berryterminal".
02:39
vagrantc: I didn't configure de ssh keys.
02:40
vagrantc: I read your name allover the documentation that I'm using to try to solve the problem... now I fell like I'm chating with a celebrity :D
02:41
I using mostly this How To --> http://www.uzerp.com/blog/running-raspberry-pis-as-thin-clients-with-ubuntu-14-04-lts
02:41
And it says that for the image client I could use i386
02:43* vagrantc has no idea what berryterminal does
02:43
<vagrantc>
i started documenting the process for running a real LTSP on raspberry pi because i wasn't impressed with berryterminal...
02:43
then gbaman_ used that to create pinet
02:44
<juantelez>
vagrantc: I wont use your --> http://cascadia.debian.net/trenza/Documentation/raspberrypi-ltsp-howto because I was afraid it was not updated
02:44
<vagrantc>
and work_alkisg has been working on getting support for raspberry pi in LTSP directly
02:44
juantelez: it's a bit dated, but i don't think much has changed ... other than there are some more polished howtos out there now
02:44
<juantelez>
I'm trying to avoid the use of pinet because I want to learn a little more about LTSP
02:45
<vagrantc>
that's a good goal :)
02:45
<juantelez>
vagrantc: Ok. Thanks a lot.
02:45
vagrantc: Pizza arrives.
02:45
vagrantc: Later I will try to found ot what "configure the server's ssh keys" implies. Thanks!!
02:46
<vagrantc>
basically, you need the client's /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts to contain entries for the servers you connect to
02:48
if you only use rpi2 boards, you can even use debian or ubuntu rather than raspbian

11:11
<muppis_>
alkisg, did you mention earlier that first gen rpi is good enough to be thin client?
11:13
<fiesh_>
from personal experience with the rpi, I'd definitely attest to that, without having tried it as a thin client
11:16
<muppis_>
Tried once to use BerryTerminal, but didn't get it working as client. As normal desktop it is... well, usable.
11:19
<alkisg>
muppis_: I haven't tried the first gen pi, I only tried the second gen
11:19
Currently the second gen can work as a fat client, but barely
11:19
It has a lot of issues to get resolved, like graphics acceleration
11:20
I imagine that the first gen will run as a thin client, but 3-4 times slower and without any graphics acceleration either
11:20
So I wouldn't buy any of them... maybe the zero clients, being cheaper, are worth it, but in general I'd certainly prefer anything x86-based
11:21
*"pi zero", not "zero thin clients" that lack a cpu...
11:24
<muppis_>
My next questions was about Zero. Anyone has been lucky to get them to test? In Swag shop seems to be sold out. :D
11:25
<alkisg>
pi zero doesn't have an ethernet port though, right?
11:26
<muppis_>
Nope, just one USB.
11:27
But previous rpi's ethernet has done over USB as well, so I don't see that as a problem.
11:27
<alkisg>
You'd just need some more $$ for that
11:27
A set of new motherboard + processor + ram is about 100€, we generally prefer to update our existing clients that way and have them work as decent ltsp fat clients
11:28
This way they have 2000+ score in cpubenchmark.net instead of ...something like 100 that Pi has
11:28
And full graphics acceleration for 2d and 3d and video
11:30
<muppis_>
That's true. There's still usage for Pi -kind of hw as where no use of video or 3D graphics. I know it sounds little bit dull, but that exists.
11:31
<alkisg>
Sure, they're excellent for many use cases, but just not as normal desktops
11:31
<muppis_>
Agreed.

<quinox>
praise the Greek schools PPA
15:27
Ubuntu 15.10 LTSP still fails to boot due to the overlay kernel change
15:27
vanilla
15:29
installing the ltsp-client-core from the PPA and voilà, it boots
15:30* quinox is well on schedule to get all the clients working again before Monday morning :)
15:35gbaman has joined IRC (gbaman!~gbaman@host81-139-236-94.in-addr.btopenworld.com)
15:36
<alkisg>
quinox: thanks! :)
15:36
quinox: you'd better add it to your sources instead of selectively installing packages from it though
15:36
It will save you from 100% cpu usage from zenity, from socat,
15:37
from thousands of temp files caused by gnome-keyring, and lots of other unrelated bugs
15:39
<quinox>
I've added the PPA to apt/sources.list.d/ltsp.conf - it didn't see any updates except ltsp-client-core but the image is still vanilla
15:39
<alkisg>
Both the server and the chroot?
15:39
<quinox>
yes
15:40
<alkisg>
And you didn't e.g. see an ltsp-server update?
15:40
<quinox>
on the server yes
15:40
<alkisg>
OK, you should also see zenity and some others
15:40
ah 15.10, never mind about zenity, it was fixed there
15:41
We don't update many packages for non-LTS versions
15:41
These are all in 15.10: https://launchpad.net/~ts.sch.gr/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=wily
15:41
...while for e.g. 12.04 there are a lot more: https://launchpad.net/~ts.sch.gr/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=precise
15:43
<quinox>
quite a few
15:45
We didn't use the PPA before, up to 14.04 the LTSP worked just fine
15:45
with 14.10 and 15.04 we manually applied any patches... now on the PPA (much much easier ^^)
15:46
the fixes from these modified packages have been reported upstream I suppose?
15:51
the only persisting problem on the fat clients we have is that Chromium sometimes goes into insane mode, causing a lot of network traffic, raising the load and making the fat client really slow
15:51
killing random tabs fixes it for a few minutes and then it starts again
15:52
restarting chromium fixes it for the rest of the day usually
15:52
in general I think Chromium is buggier than FF
15:59
Google Talk idem (unrelated to LTSP), I guess Google focuses more on new services and features than on stability/bugs
16:00
Talk Hangout... whatever they call it these days
16:02
<juantelez>
Hi,
16:02
<quinox>
hello
16:03
<juantelez>
Hello, quinox . I'm having problems to login for the first time with ltsp client. I think the problem is related to ssh.
16:04
<quinox>
Do you see any errors?
16:05
<juantelez>
Yesterday, vagrantc toll me to configure know_host in the client. What I did was copy the know_host file from my home... is that right?
16:06
quinox: Yes. failed password
16:07
quinox: I made lstp-chroot / passwod user / exit / lstp-update-image. Is that right to set the passwd?
16:08
<quinox>
Normally the client logs in on the SSH of the server I think, so changing a password should happen server side
16:08
<alkisg>
(05:46:29 μμ) quinox: the fixes from these modified packages have been reported upstream I suppose? ==> the ppa is upstream, ubuntu is downstream
16:09
<juantelez>
quinox: It worked!!!
16:09
<quinox>
hooray
16:10
<juantelez>
quinox: But I worked using the original password from my user... not the one a made whit chroot.
16:11
<alkisg>
juantelez: user accounts should be on the server, you shouldn't have any user accounts in the chroot
16:12
<juantelez>
