<andygraybeal>
what is that remote access app that alkisg made? does it work for non-LTSP type situations?
18:01
<bennabiy>
andygraybeal: are you referring to Epoptes?
18:01
<andygraybeal>
ah yes Epoptes
18:01
I just foudn someting called Guacamole .. i'm going to research this
18:01
<bennabiy>
andygraybeal: I would recommend x2go for non LTSP situations, if the destination is a linux box
18:02
<andygraybeal>
yea, i agree.. x2go thank you!
18:02
i haven't used x2go in forever :)
18:02
<bennabiy>
It has really come a long ways
18:03
I am running into an issue where users cannot plug in an external DVD drive into a thin client and use it. It might be different if it is hooked up when the client loads... Thoughts?
18:04
<andygraybeal>
not from me, if your asking me. i had problems with usb drives not being recognized.. but i remember i fixed it.. it's been years.

vagrantc: It seems I am running into the same issue as someone on the mailing list about the cdpinger etc. Did you change only the debian code, which would still need to be ported to Ubuntu / Mint or is it a LTSPwide change?

19:38* vagrantc waves
19:39
<vagrantc>
bennabiy: let me check on ltspfs
19:40
i do recall alkisg doing some checks on ubuntu
19:42
bennabiy: what version of ltspfs/ltspfsd?
19:44
bennabiy: far as I can tell, the udev rules are just using upstream since 1.3.x
19:44* bennabiy waves at vagrantc
19:45
<bennabiy>
let me check on versions... this is at one of my remote labs
19:45
on a side note, how is progress towards 6?
19:46
<vagrantc>
bennabiy: haven't seen much, really.
19:46
<bennabiy>
I understand that one...
19:46
<vagrantc>
bennabiy: sbalneav put a bit of work into some new libpam/libnss framework ideas ...
19:47
<bennabiy>
vagrantc: That is encouraging. Documented?

<bennabiy>
vagrantc: 1.3-1
19:50
Do you have any thoughts why usb drives and external dvd drives would not work on my thin clients?
19:50
It seems to be something that changed with 14.04
19:51
<vagrantc>
bennabiy: shouldn't be any differences between ubuntu and debian
19:51
<bennabiy>
vagrantc: That is what I thought
19:52
<vagrantc>
bennabiy: 1.2 dropped cdpinger entirely
19:53
just uses udev rules
19:53
<bennabiy>
Hmm. So it must be something else. I just noticed what you had said to Michael on the mailing list
19:54AlexPortable has left IRC (AlexPortable!uid7568@gateway/web/irccloud.com/x-nyeqzdxccpbtujnp, Quit: Connection closed for inactivity)
19:54* vagrantc doesn't recall
19:54
<vagrantc>
basically, it comes down to "does udev give us the right information?"
19:56
i can't test all possible device combinations, but i did go so far as to test USB CD and DVD drives, internal DVD drive, external USB hard drive, and USB sticks
19:57
might have even test a usb floppy drive... though i recall having a hard time finding working media
19:58
<bennabiy>
you could find a relic on ebay for $5-$10 ;)
19:58
I used to have windows 1.0 on 5 1/4
19:59
Back when floppies really were floppy
19:59
<vagrantc>
it's all a matter of degree.
19:59* bennabiy mutters something about flopping them in the trash...
19:59
<bennabiy>
true
20:00
<vagrantc>
for example, my laptop is floppier than i'd like
20:00
<bennabiy>
HAH!
20:00
<vagrantc>
ok, i got to pretend to have artistic sense, to get ldm-themes updated in Debian ASAP
20:01
<bennabiy>
I know that feeling!
20:01* vagrantc nudges highvoltage again
20:01
<bennabiy>
vagrantc: Do you have a suggestion of what I could try remotely to find out why the DVD drive is not working?
20:02
I can call someone and have them sit down and plug it in etc.

<bennabiy>
vagrantc: thank you. I will see what I can come up with. Do you think it might have something to do with sshfs or ltspfs as well, because it shows on the local client, but not to the server
21:47
I shouldn't have to specify LOCALDEV right? It should be default to true if I remember correctly
21:50
<vagrantc>
should default to true, yes.
21:50
bennabiy: so that's a whole different world of problems ...
21:50
bennabiy: if it's not showing up on the server.
21:50
bennabiy: is it running systemd?
21:51
bennabiy: there were two major systemd compatibility issues fixed in 1.4
21:51
bennabiy: ltspfs 1.4, that is
21:52
<bennabiy>
vagrantc: yes, systemd
21:52
204
21:53
<vagrantc>
bennabiy: that explains why it doesn't work, then.
21:53
<bennabiy>
what is the best way to manually pull in 1.4?
21:54
<vagrantc>
i don't believe "best way" exists for most any question
21:54
<bennabiy>
true
21:55
should I put it in my ppa?
21:55
<vagrantc>
you should be able to rebuild the ltspfs 1.4-1 source package on ubuntu/mint/whatever
21:55
<bennabiy>
that is what I was thinking
21:55
<vagrantc>
if ppa's work for you, it might work
21:55
<bennabiy>
I already have a ppa for some mint custom stuff, so it should be part of the package :)
21:57
<vagrantc>
so mint based on ubuntu 14.04 but using systemd?
21:57
<bennabiy>
yes
21:57
seems to be
21:57
<vagrantc>
i wonder if your thin client is using systemd
21:57
<bennabiy>
hmmm. that is a good question
21:57
<vagrantc>
because then it shouldn't have worked on the client-side either
21:57
<bennabiy>
let me check
21:57
<vagrantc>
anyways, give 1.4-1~ a try.
21:59
<bennabiy>
would I need to install it on the client and server?
21:59
<vagrantc>
i'd recommend it
22:00
in theory you could run 1.3 on the client and 1.4 on the server, or vice-versa ... but it fixes bugs in both sides.
22:00
<bennabiy>
I will put it on both
22:00

22:05
Is the code on launchpad the most recent?
22:05
vagrantc: ^
22:06
<vagrantc>
bennabiy: the code?
22:06
<bennabiy>
the source
22:06
as far as 1.4-1
22:06
<vagrantc>
you'll want to build from the 1.4 tag
22:07
<bennabiy>
ok
22:07
<vagrantc>
and i apparently failed to tag the debian revision
22:07* vagrantc should just switch to git for the debian packaging source tree.
22:08
<vagrantc>
tagging is the one feature i need to use bzr for still.
22:08
<bennabiy>
that would make things easier :) I have had my head in the dough for the last few months and am getting fuzzier and fuzzier on things.
22:09
<vagrantc>
bennabiy: in the debian packaging branch, the last commit i have is "Upload ltspfs 1.4-1 to unstable."
22:09
bennabiy: so unless the mirroring to launchpad is broken, that should be current, too.
22:09ricotz has left IRC (ricotz!~rico@ubuntu/member/ricotz, Quit: Ex-Chat)
22:11
<bennabiy>
The last commit in launchpad is a change in configure.ac to 1.4 from 1.3
22:11
I do not see Upload ltspfs 1.4-1 to unstable
22:11
<vagrantc>
bennabiy: the packaging branch is a separate branch
22:12
bennabiy: upstream doesn't include the debian dir
22:15
<bennabiy>
vagrantc: thank you. I missed that
22:26
vagrantc: is the ltspfs-debuan-packaging the right one to use?
22:26
err, ltspfs-debian-packaging
22:30
<vagrantc>
sounds about right ... i don't interact with the launchpad branches directly for the debian bits ... it's just a mirror of alioth.debian.org branches
22:30
sometimes the mirroring breaks and i don't notice for months
22:31
<bennabiy>
heh
22:36
hmm. Looks like it is not systemd, it is upstart on both
22:36
systemd is installed, but not being used
22:36
pid 1 is still /sbin/init
22:55
Umm. vagrantc: getting a failed build due to ./ChangeLog not found

<bennabiy>
bah. I just requested a build from alkis ltspfs-daily
23:01
<vagrantc>
for something a little more real
23:01
i bet alkisg has the recipies you need
23:01
<bennabiy>
yup
23:02
why recreate the wheel :)
23:09
bah, his did the same thing.
23:10
Does that mean I need to pull your packaging and then make that change and nest to my own packaging?
23:11
<vagrantc>
i just do it the easy way.
23:12
launchpad makes an otherwise easy process complicated...
23:12
<bennabiy>
to true
23:12

23:12
<vagrantc>
though the autobuilders are nice
23:13
<bennabiy>
I have thought about trying to set one up myself, but do not have near enough time
23:42
Finally got it to work
23:42
Going to have to wait till after the weekend to see if it fixed it or not
