<pingufan>
Hi, yesterday I excounterd two occurances of system overload within 1/2 hour. I could find out that they happened when firefox and flashplayer was in use. (Well I don't say that this is the reason, but that it was active.).
07:00
I uninstalled now flashplayer on the server, so youtube etc. don't work any more and I will watch the system stability now.
07:01
Meanwhile I tried to enable Direct_X, this didn't change much - the second crash followed soon.
07:01
Any ideas what can cause this instability?
07:01
<alkisg>
Put the output of `top` on pastebin when you're experiencing the problem
07:02
If the problem is DIRECTX_, you'll see high sshd usage
07:02
If the problem is firefox, you'll see high firefox usage
07:02
If the problem is flash, you'll see high plugin_container usage
07:02
<muppis>
Or nspluginwrapper, if using 32 bit flash in 64 bit system.
07:03
<pingufan>
I have almost no chance when this happens. System load goes rapidely up (20+++, once I saw 170 !) and the system accepts no command any more.
07:03
The host is 64 bit, the clients don't run local apps and are 32 bit.
07:04
<alkisg>
pingufan: did you apply the limits that I proposed 2 days ago?
07:04
<muppis>
That's ok, but using 32 bit flasplayer in 64 bit Firefox has caused problems.
07:04
<alkisg>
This way users have a maximum load, and can't crash your system
07:04
<pingufan>
I didn't recognize your suggestion.
07:05
<alkisg>
I see. The logs are in /topic if you want to check again.
07:08
<pingufan>
don't find it
07:08
What shall I search for?
07:09
<alkisg>
Anyway, here's some reading for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fork_bomb
07:09
It also has pointers on how to avoid it, if I remember correctly
07:09
Otherwise, man limits.conf
07:10
^ that was my suggestion
07:13
<pingufan>
So you have the idea that on e client possibly causes an attack?
07:14
<alkisg>
It might be accidental, e.g. even due to the problematic flash plugin
07:14
But the way to deal with it is the same
07:15
You want to impose limits on cpu usage, on process count per user, etc etc
07:16
If you get to the point where writing that fork bomb in a shell doesn't crash your system, then you should be able to handle any other problems too
07:16
<pingufan>
man limits.cof reads a little bit unclear.
07:16
<alkisg>
So when you have the problem again, you'll have the time to properly troubleshoot it, see which user/process is to blame, etc
07:16
If you have problems understanding limits.conf, try asking in your distro channel, it's not at all LTSP related
07:17
<pingufan>
Sure. But this is a very good hint. Thank you.
07:17
<alkisg>
You're welcome
07:18
<pingufan>
Btw. A normal user cannit install a flashplayer plugin, no? I uninstalled it now (as root).
07:20
<alkisg>
I think he can install plugins locally but I haven't tried
07:28
<pingufan>
alkisg: Something different (to limits): Yesterday I found a description on how to allow passwordless ssh from server -> client. 1. create an rsa key 2. copy the .pub file into /srv/tftpboot/KIWI as "authorized_keys". Well, meanwhile both, the server and all clients were restarted - but I still cannot do a ssh to anyone of them. I get "Permission denied". Is something missing?
07:28cyberorg has left IRC (cyberorg!~cyberorg@opensuse/member/Cyberorg, Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
07:29
<alkisg>
pingufan: what's your use case with passwordless ssh? Maybe LDM_GUESTLOGIN would suit you better?
07:30
<pingufan>
I want to be able to shut off or reboot a client from the server side. a passwordless ssh would allow me then: "ssh clientname reboot"
07:30
And then I can do that from a script as I do not have to enter passwords.
07:32
Currently this clients are entirely out of control, such things make me nervous.
07:32
<alkisg>
Installing ssh in the chroot is considered bad practise, as you expose the private keys unencrypted to the network
07:33
So anyone with a bit of knowledge can gain root access to your clients and run programs on them
07:33
And e.g. install keyloggers to get people's passwords etc
07:33
Check the ubuntultsp wiki, it has another method for client shutdown
07:33
<pingufan>
Somewhere there I found it, if I remember right.
07:34
<alkisg>
Search for client shutdown, and an nc script that listens for commands etc
07:39
<pingufan>
I just read now this http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-limiting-user-process.html and I am unsure about the values to set. You don't have an example setup you can show me?
07:40
I tend to insert a line @usershard nproc 30 into it.

<pingufan>
alkisg: Please, only a little assistance: When I create a new user group "clients" and use @clients in limits.conf - must this group be the only one, or can/must I add users as secondary group?
07:47
<alkisg>
pingufan: sorry, work - also I haven't checked the limits.conf recently, I'd have to read the man page too
07:47
<pingufan>
ok. no problem. I thought you know it.

got a question... so what if i bridged a vpn in a remote office ... and pxe booted my boxes from the server in the main office? the bridged network would allow dhcp broadcasts... has anyone done this? is it performance prohibitive?

good morning everyone
14:49
how's that new version of ltsp coming? any idea on release date
14:49
<Hyperbyte>
Matrix3000, about 7.
14:50
<Matrix3000>
7 what?
14:50
haha
14:51
if you guys have a deb for me to test, I can fire a vm up to test it

14:54
<Matrix3000>
that has the lastest commit
14:54
sweet
14:59
<Gadi>
its in a bit of disarray atm
14:59
:)
14:59
you may want to focus energies on testing other stuff
14:59
:)
15:00
<Matrix3000>
oh, so you guys are so good at making code lol
15:00
that you brake it more and more daily huh
15:02alkisg has joined IRC (alkisg!~alkisg@ubuntu/member/alkisg)

<Hyperbyte>
Matrix3000, making improvements in programming code often requires restructuring certain things. You can't restructure a whole program at once, so many times during development, programs will not work properly.
15:05
<Matrix3000>
i was kidding
15:05
<Hyperbyte>
Matrix3000, this is also why you should really not use daily builds for anything other than testing the code you have developed.
15:05
Matrix3000, I'm not. :)
15:05
<Matrix3000>
:p
15:06

actually, I excel at breaking it

<Hyperbyte>
Good morning Jim!
15:30
<jammcq>
hey Hyperbyte
15:30
<Matrix3000>
hmmm...is there a way to set up ltsp monitoring
15:30
like how would i monitor the ltsp service
15:30
is it possible?
15:31
is it basically a TCP port 6007 connection attempt
15:31
if it makes a connection nbd works
15:32
<Gadi>
Matrix3000: ltsp is not a service
15:33
Matrix3000: you can monitor dhcp, tftp, nbd, ssh
15:33
<jammcq>
it's a way of life :)
15:33
<Gadi>
hehe
15:33* Gadi waves to Jim
15:33
<jammcq>
hey gadi
15:36
<Matrix3000>
how would i monitor nbd
15:36
by port or ?
15:39
<Gadi>
yeah
15:39
it runs on one port
15:39
and spawns a process for each mount
15:41
<Matrix3000>
ok sweet, so i could to a telnet to 6007 and get a connection
15:41
basically
15:41
kinda like a port scan
15:41
if 6007 is up, it's working
15:42
<Hyperbyte>
Matrix3000, depends on how you define "working"... and NBD ports are specified in /etc/inetd.conf for LTSP. Probably not 6007.
15:43
<Matrix3000>
yea, i was just saying, i forgot exactly what it was
15:43
have to look up teh firewall stuff for ltsp on the wiki
15:43
<Hyperbyte>
2000/2001 probably. There are tools out there that can monitor system services for you. You don't have to reinvent the wheel.
15:43
<Matrix3000>
i am, im using Zabbix
15:43
<Hyperbyte>
Ah. :)
15:43
<Matrix3000>
just need to make rules that monitor it
15:44
i actually have zabbix monitoring all the thin clients too
15:44
well "fat clients" anyways
15:44
working on figuring out how to do it for "thin clients"
